Hey friends, I've seen some feedback now that I've been reading other reviews, and thoughts on the film. Obviously, it's a body horror but it is DIALED ALL THE WAY UP! Which as a disturbing movie lover is something I really enjoy. The film does play on the male gaze like other film I mentioned - Revenge, I found the message to be really overwhelming about how we view ourselves and treat ourselves - but I'm aware some women didn't gel with the presentation in the same way, and that's totally vaild. I am a body horror fan and a lover of disturbing film so it worked for me. But do keep this in mind if body image is something you struggle with the message is not subtle at all and there are a lot of conventional beauty standards applied. Have fun!
Emma, a few years back I saw The Neon Demon, I was ready for a full feminist diatribe disguised as a horror movie , I got something a little less than expected and I was deeply disappointed. The movie was still a good watch but I wanted it to do more. Movies are always someone else's vision.
@@spookyastronauts I loved how it combined so many elements of body horror - the chicken through the navel was wonderfully abstract and kudos for the production design in all that food scattered throughout her home. You're absolutely correct on the male gaze and how the newer version of the aerobic show was filmed with so many close ups of Sue's body, from every angle, that it was an uncomfortable experience but necessary to "expose" the hypocrisy of men. I can see why Quaid is Trump voter; his thoroughly disgusting character: misogynistic, vulgar, sexist, narcissistic and I'd never run out of words to describe how I loathed him. I really enjoy your reviews and was delighted when you got back in your car and shared your "WTF?" Moment. I decided I had to see if opening night, even though I hate to be at work at 430 am today. What a wild climax and kudos to everyone involved from the actors to the score, production design, cinematography, etc. That final shot was funny, sad, sweet and a perfect ending to a great movie.
@@darrenjohnson3374 I was disappointed too, but I actually walked out. Me tooooo!!!!! It boggles my mind that you can give such well thought out reviews just after seeing the movies. A real pro. I too take your reviews very seriously.
I like that as well. And while the memory is still fresh, you really get a first impression, which might change alot during time, but its still super helpful to make decisions on what movies to watch in the cinema. :)
Just returned from seeing it and Emma is right you cannot over-hype this brilliant film. It went places you didn't expect it to and beyond. Masterfully directed, acted and what a fantastic score, production design, costumes and special effects. Everyone connected to this project brought passion to their work.
I just saw it as well and people aint lying me and my mom both thought it was a masterpiece. This film made me laugh. It made me scream. It made me sad. It me reflect on my own self image and insecurities around aging, made me think about the artifice of hollywood and beauty standards and thought it was brilliant how artificial the movie seemed, with so much strange architecture and so many long hallways that create this sort of metaphorical and literal distance from the viewer, like a funhouse mirror version if reality where something just doesnt feel right. It was so awesome. From the first frame to the last it was just brilliant. Movie of the year i doubt anything in these last few months of 2024 can top this
I thought it was absolutely brilliant. They ending could be considered overlong but the final gag is so awesome. This goes to Society levels of gore and then some. Brilliant
There was a woman in my screening who said “Demi can’t do any better?” She doesn’t get it. This movie was phenomenal and arguably one of Demi’s best performances
Oh Emma I am so happy! I was beyond excited for you to see this from the day I saw it. I just kept thinking and waiting to see a notification about The Substance from you. It was one of the most exhilarating, tense, sad, disgusting, and enjoyable experiences for me in years. The pacing of this film is relentless.
One of my favorite movies ever. A woman filmmaker too. You are on the edge of your seat at every moment on that movie (and feel it like you said) viscerally. If it's anything like that what's a different plot I'm sure it's amazing can't wait to see this!
I was at that screening in The Netherlands, did not notice the people who walked out or fainted cause we had such a good time. It was a screening at a rooftop in our city center, beautiful warm night with a fireworks break because of another party going on. Amazing experience!
Hey, Emma! First, I wanted to say it a few times, and finally saying it now... I just love your style of taking us to the cinema, the music, editing, pitch perfect! These few seconds are almost allways my personal favourite parts of your videos (and I love them fully, ofc). Thanks! Second, as basically anyone seeing this vid I guess, you alone hyped me for this movie more than anything ever! And I had it on my radar, for sure, but now it amped up to the most anticipated! So glad you enjoyed this one! Some amazing purposeful filmmaking. You can feel the anger behind it, and somehow it manages to be so funny on the surface and devastatingly sad at the same time. I overheard a woman talking about this with a friend call it misogynistic and I guess I can see where they’re coming from but I think that reading misses the point a bit 😆
I think its the male gaze which is a lot of the film, ive heard other woman say the same and that it is triggering. I think thats totally valid, this film is very intense for some viewers and it is a hard watch at times but i enjoy disturbing so it works for me.
That news story from the Netherlands checks out: about 10% walked out, 1 fainted, but still 75% reportedly liked it, according to the theater employees. Side note: it was a open air summer night pre-screening and people tend to go there for a nice night out (usually alcohol is involved as well). At least some people probably didn't know it was going to be horror or didn't know it was going to be this INSANE.
The look on your face when you got in the car SOLD ME! Thanks for another great review, giving just enough information to suck us in and still give nothing away! Love your reviews, stay safe!

This is one of the few horror films I would rate 10/10 wow what a ride of insanity. The film is beautifully shot and the story with its themes and imagery are perfect at what it's trying to portray. The actors did a fantastic job. Demi took it to the extreme here and I was not expecting that from her. I was floored and I'm still thinking about this film.
This movie left me speechless and my jaw was sore because it was open for so many moments in this film! It was such an assault on the senses in the best way and I just loved every moment, the sound design, the prosthetics, the colours and the acting! Demi deserves all the praise! Her and Margaret were asked a lot of for this film and they did that! The shots of the men being way too close felt so authentic because in my personal life men often invade my personal space, the male gaze as well! I loved the way it was handled and I actually found the movie so funny at moments! I laughed and so did others at my screening, and there are moments that broke my heart and made me feel so sad for Demi's character. Honestly 5 stars! I haven't rated a film 5 in a very very long time! To me it was a perfect film and true art.
oh I'm so excited and rejoiced!! I really loved revenge and Coralie immediately became one of my favorite directors. thank you for the exciting review, Emma❤
This movie is basically everything I love about Black Swan, Mother!, a variety of Stephen King stories and The picture of Dorian Gray. Absolute madness and I loved it.
At first I was excited about this film. Now after your review, I’ve put my cape on & now I’m SUPER excited!!! 😃 Can’t wait to see this thanks for sharing!!
This is by far my movie of the year so far! I saw it over the weekend and have not been able to get it out of my head. Thank you for your great review.
I am so tempted, I really wanna see an Esspecially gorey scene that was mentioned in the guide. It sounds really grim and cool, and I love stlyized horror/gore.
I saw this at the same time you did but on the other side of the country with 7 other people and we all enjoyed it at the same time, i even stuck around to see who did the makeup effects. 4 different houses did it all and I applauded their involvement, fucking awesome 👏 highly recommend you see it!
I saw the trailer many times and watched a dozen reviews before watching the movie, and it still didn't prepare me for this. You have to see this in a theatre before it goes away. The ending is epic bonkers!
I KNEW you were gonna give it a 10/10 the further I watched this! Oh my god, I need to see this. TITANE is my fav film of all time as I’ve mentioned before and keep comparing this to that! It’s a NEED!
I've booked my ticket for an early morning screening next week just before pay day because why not. Sounds absolutely my speed. I love being surprised and I've not seen many standout classics/amazing films (I'm uncultured as fuuuuck) but damn I love something with layers, like onions and ogres, I love me some layers
Can't agree more with this - just got back from seeing this at the Nova in Melbourne and WOW. I'll be thinking about this for days. Margaret, Dennis, and (above all) Demi were outstanding. Every single time i thought the film's intensity was at its peak it kept outdoing itself taking it further than i could've possibly imagined it would go, and it was disgusting, hilarious and jaw-droppingly shocking, sometimes all at once.
The way I ran back to your video, after watching the movie! Oh my god, that was incredible! So many feelings, not only as a horror fan but as a woman...
First of all, the last film I walked out of in a theater was "Natural Born Killers" (1994). I lasted long enough to see Rodney Dangerfield, but then I had to leave. I don't think I have ever seen such high scores from you, Emma, that you gave to "The Substance". Given that it is body horror, I will have to wait until video, just because I know myself. Glad to hear you loved the film so much. It is a great feeling to find that one film you know will be your favorite for the year.
I had no idea about this film…so thankyou for this review. I’ve watched it twice and going to go back a third time. Why can’t more films be like this because this was a fkn experience I wish I could watch it for the first time again 😫
I just got back from seeing this, it wasn't playing in my town so I drove about 30 miles to where the nearest theater was showing it. I absolutely loved it! I thought Alien Romulus would be my favorite this year, but this blew it out of the water. It also reminds me of Manifesto in terms of the stylization. I liked that I never knew where the story was going at any given time. I haven't squirmed like this in a movie since The Eyes of my Mother and yes it should be seen in the theater. If it wasn't playing so far away I would see it again tomorrow. Amazing film, definitely a 10 out of 10.

YEEEESSSSS!!! So excited for this one...been waiting for it for a while now, since I first heard about it!!
ONE OF THE MOST INSANE AND BEST MOVIES IVE SEEN IN A FKN WHILE WOW
This movie is basically everything I love about Black Swan, Mother!, a variety of Stephen King stories and The picture of Dorian Gray. Absolute madness and I loved it.
At first I was excited about this film. Now after your review, I’ve put my cape on & now I’m SUPER excited!!! 😃 Can’t wait to see this thanks for sharing!!
hope you enjoy it!
Crazy flick...roller coaster ride in a theater. Oscar winner Demi.
This is by far my movie of the year so far! I saw it over the weekend and have not been able to get it out of my head. Thank you for your great review.
Of all the dozen reviews I’ve seen of The Substance, yours was my favorite.
An absolute ten from me too, still thinking about it today. What a tour de force, Demi absolutely crushed it!
I am so tempted, I really wanna see an Esspecially gorey scene that was mentioned in the guide. It sounds really grim and cool, and I love stlyized horror/gore.
id say 60% of the film is pure gore!
my jaw dropped at the 10/10
SAMEEE
I saw this at the same time you did but on the other side of the country with 7 other people and we all enjoyed it at the same time, i even stuck around to see who did the makeup effects. 4 different houses did it all and I applauded their involvement, fucking awesome 👏 highly recommend you see it!
I saw the trailer many times and watched a dozen reviews before watching the movie, and it still didn't prepare me for this. You have to see this in a theatre before it goes away. The ending is epic bonkers!
demi moore was AMAZING, also ironically i thought she was more beautiful than id ever seen her in my life
I KNEW you were gonna give it a 10/10 the further I watched this! Oh my god, I need to see this. TITANE is my fav film of all time as I’ve mentioned before and keep comparing this to that! It’s a NEED!
yes i see that!
@@spookyastronauts Emma, can you perhaps tell me if this film features any SA as a trigger warning? I would really like to be prepared going
no SA. but look up trigger warnings if needed! the films have content warnings on IMDB
@@spookyastronauts Thanks Emma! Will use this for future reference!
Great news! Glad it is good. Seeing it Wednesday.
Everything you said, I couldn’t agree more! Can’t wait for your in depth analysis of this!!!
It was such a ride!! My fave this year so far
Woah now I’m very excited to check it out
The way I ran back to your video, after watching the movie!
Requiem for a dream meets the fly with a call back to Carry with some gaspar Noel styling
Its been a while since I've seen spooky this excited
Wow, this is a surprise and it was not really on my radar until now, but I'm going to plan to see it opening day based on this review😊
A 10/10 personal score?! My excitement for this movie just went through the roof. Plus, you had me at David Cronenberg.
You sold me spooky!! This wasn’t even on my radar but my priority watch this weekend!
the car intro alone got me hype.
Revenge was great but I had zero expectations for this film based on knowing nothing about it... now I can't wait.
Omg @ your personal score! Seeing this at a festival tomoorow night, so pumped!!
