    I wish consoles had more of these weird midbudget japanese games. The ps2 was loaded with them but theyre all gone now.

      Bruce Wayne The development costs went up and the market seemingly shrunk down - you're either indie or big publisher, nothing in-between. I miss it - a lot of my childhood games were those "middle ground" PC titles with a cult-classic status, but limited audience.

      Whining Ylthin it really doesn't help that there is this notion that every game needs a several million dollar marketing budget with ludicrous gimmicks to be successful

    I'm almost certian that Yoko Taro is blackmailing the entire upper management of Square Enix.
    That's the only reason I can come up with of why the Drakengard series is still alive to this day.

    • @sofija1996
      @sofija1996 7 лет назад +67

      Szadek23 Somebody from the upper management is a huge fan of Taro's work. He supposedly stated that as long as Dragon Quest brings them money, Taro can make his games.
      That's also why they got Platinum to work at Automata - to ensure the game is technically good this time and boost the sales.

    The only thing I would add to that many recent Nier reviews is the fact that it goes one step beyond anything else with its' narrative. People say things like "games can't do anything a movie or a book didn't do better". Well, I think ending D proves that video games can do a truly unique narrative, only possible within this medium.

    • @chickmcjr
      @chickmcjr 7 лет назад +10

      I agree strongly with this. With a video game developers are honestly only limited by their imagination at what they can create. There are SO many things you can do with a video game, even if it's simple. I would be lying if I said any moments from a lot of games stick with me as much as Ending D does. Very little things in any kind of media hit me as hard as that did.

    • @dragonphoreal

      People who say that "video gamese can't do anything that a book or movie can do better" either look down on video games as an art form or are the kind of people who just want games to emulate movies.

    I really appreciate that you went out of the way to recommend people play the original NieR rather than making a synopsis video like other youtubers are doing with the intent on people skipping the original and diving straight into Automata. It honestly feels like people are going to have their experience cheapened unless they play the original. Or maybe I'm just a bitter fan who's salty about the attention these games have been getting from the mainstream gaming community after being dismissed for so long just because of Platinum being on board for the project.

    Despite coming out 7 years ago, I still haven't heard a game soundtrack better than Nier. Not even just on musical merit alone, but just how and where the music itself was used and the story its attached to adds so much more weight to an already stellar soundtrack. I really loved Nier, I'm glad it finally got its sequel.

  • @spartan456
    @spartan456 4 года назад +2

    I would add one thing to this review: if you've never played NieR before, and you're interested in giving it a try, do yourself a favor and try doing it with emulation. NieR and Drakengard are well beyond playable with emulators like RPCS3. In fact, they're even better on an emulator than they are on the native hardware. If your computer is good enough, it's definitely worth trying. You can even experience NieR Replicant (the Japanese version of the game with a slightly altered story) fully translated to English thanks to modern emulation.
    I played Automata years before playing NieR, and even though I had played the objectively "better" game first, I still fell in love with NieR. The clunky combat had a certain charm to it, probably because I could tell where a lot of the gameplay ideas came from for Automata. It was like seeing the early vision of what would eventually become the polished combat system we got in Automata.

    Hey HyperBit!
    This series is spectacular in introducing players to a game as well as acting as a review. I watch reviews for games I haven't played and I don't get a real sense of anything besides a general - this is good, this is bad, but something to the way you acknowledge the flaws and try to build it up as being better than the sum of its parts usually makes me eager to play them. Keep doing what you are doing, your reviews are more influential to me than most!

  • @marcbraun5342

    I love this game sooo much! It really goes through all emotions. I usually don't like those games with a big map and several sidequests. Skyrim bored me, The Wichter 3 also cause they filled them not with the thing that drives one trough a world like that, neighter the mistery nor the empathy.
    It's usefull to know that you get nothing for completing sidequests in Nier, no XP and maybe a little reward. But this is the one game where I finished all of them in my first run of the game, even the fishing and gardening quests, because they rewarded me with something much more valuable than XP and something those other games just couldn't pull of right...little stories of the people that world. All centered around the themes of death, loss, sacrifice, sorrow. All in small steps. Like this...
    There is the *minor spoiler begin* story of an old sick man who has a dog he loves but he ran away. He want's to see him again, worries about him and just want's to connect again before he dies from illnes and he's of course sad that his long time companion left him. Eventually you find the dog dead, killed by shades with a leaf between his teeth. You go back to the old man, to tell him you found his dog with the theme "he will be heartbroken" only to find out the old man, you got to know though some small conversations, passed away due to his illnes. The person (can't remember who) you meet there gives a hint that the leaf you found is an incredient to a medicine for the old mans illness. *minor spoiler end*
    And there are the times when you go fishing and your pal, a book who can't do anything but talk, isn't allowed to talk because he would scare away the fishes and, while beeing the stick in the butt scolary type usually, get's cranky like a litte kid, cause he's bored which is sooo funny you...continue fishing! Just to piss him off! :D
    And there is Emile and the probably saddest moment (even for this game) you probalby encounter in any movie or game and I won't spoil it, just to be said, if the prologue of The Last of Us got you emotional attached, get ready to dry out out in this game! It's one of a kind and while Automata managed to have the better gameplay, Nier is still the superior game!

    I love your videos hyperbithero and I do think this one does do a good job at selling the game, however I think you may of shown a bit TOO much of the game in this. Both in some pretty story important scenes as well as just the small little surprises like the book section which part of the fun was how unexpected it is. The only part I find particularly egregious is that you showed the shadowlord at all cause that part was kind of meant to be a big surprise especially with him taking yonah which you also showed.

    Ok, I finished the game last night with all 4 endings(You really only need to replay the game 3 times and make a final save before the final dungeon to get all the endings).
    I knew I would like it and I figured out that I was farther than 1/3 through the game. More like 2/3rds. I thought it was great and I felt down after I experienced everything....until I popped in Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan and saw the opening and cheered up instantly that is.(I am a simple man)
    Great game for what it was and I definitely want to play Automata and Drakengard at some point. I think I might want to play Drakengard 3 too...but we'll see. Great video HBH, I'm glad I chose not to watch this video before finishing the game. No offence to people getting into the series via Automata, I just think the original is something where playing the whole thing or at least watching / reading a let's play (I suggest the Dark id for this and the drakengard franchise as a whole) is really worth it, especially for ending D.

    I'll NEVER understand the gameplay complaints whenever people talk about Nier. It's the reason why I was so hyped about the game until when it was released I instantly forgot it when it was destroyed by reviewers. I only went back and finished it 4 years later when I found out how shit most reviewers taste in games/combat was. It's not bad by any measure and every weapon feels very different, both in weight and range. There really aren't SO many action RPG to get to say that its combat is anything but above average.

    • @tomstonemale
      @tomstonemale 6 лет назад

      The combat is average dude. If it weren't because you unlock more weapons and attacks later on (and most attacks are not really helpful), what you get on the first two hours is what you get till you finish the game. It's repetitive as hell until the end, with 30 seconds of actual enjoyment with each bossfight and nonde with the usual enemies.

If you're interested in automata and want to learn the story before playing like I did I recommend you do the same, the actual gameplay for both these games, especially drakengard is not very good but the story is very intriguing. Also reading up on the nier timeline found on the wiki is a good way to get an overall idea about the events of the spin off novellas/stories which are key to fully understanding the story.

    I mean i agree with everything you're saying, but back when Nier came out I would've thoguht you were beying way too critical. When this game came out I was blown away by how much fun I had playing it. The closest thing I've played to nier, before nier, was like... Crisis Core or something. You gotta keep in mind this game came out in like 2011.

    I've heard nothing but amazing things about this game, and I actually was *very* interested in buying and playing it on my PS3 about several or so months ago. Sadly, the game has seen *massive* price spikes since the announcement and release of it's sequel (in Japan,) so getting it was just a bit too hard just about anywhere I looked. Unless the game gets a remaster on PS4 or the prices for it eventually goes down, I and many others will never be able to play it, and that just sucks considering how incredibly good it looks.

    I fell in love with the soundtrack when it came out, but I didn't buy a PS3 for a few years, so by the time I had the means to play it, the game wasn't really reasonably priced anymore. Looking now, it seems like it's gone down in price again and is only about $40, so maybe I'll finally pick it up. Having to dust off the PS3 and play it on that isn't an especially appealing idea, though, so maybe I won't and will just wait for it to be emulatable in a few (maybe several) years.

    The combat isn't the better ever made but I thought it was better than people give it credit, while nowhere near Bayonetta levels of combat, I still had fun with NieR's combat despite being simplistic.

    this dips a little bit too deep into spoiler territory for me. It just goes over that line between "recommending to someone who has never heard of it before" and into the "giving away TOO much about what makes the game special" but maybe that's just me.

    Here's three tips: 1. skip any side quest that requires you to get arbitrary items from enemies. 2. Get the Phoenix Spear in the Facade the desert village. Makes combat cheap but insanly op and you'll want it to be made easy after your second playthrough which you'll do because; 3. Beat it 4 times. Skip no cutscenes. Do it. Don't bitch or moan. DO IT!
    You'll thank me later or your a scrub if you don't

    • @Shamon97

      Greatnocturn Why tip 1?

    • @Nocturn3
      @Nocturn3 7 лет назад +2

      Shamon nier has a lot of side quests. rewards aren't great but most have party dialog while walking around and their banter is fun to hear. Other side quests are a chore. Collect 5 boar ass sorta thing. It's all on how much extra you want to put in a playthrough. You're gonna be running the gambit for endings (worst that's required is just to get all weapons in game and those aren't to hard) so the side quests can wear on you.

  • @nothinghere2021

    Nier really was a fantastic ride, one of the few games that makes you keep playing because of it's story. I heard Drakenguard 3 was a little weaker but is it still worth experiencing? Some people have said the localization fucked around with it a bit but I still want to give it a whirl if it's not too bad.

    • @sofija1996

      Nothing Here Square bullshited us with prequel DLC content. It's hella expensive, but expands the lore and backstory of certain characters.

    • @nothinghere2021
      @nothinghere2021 7 лет назад

      Jesus, that DLC is more expensive than the main game. If I'm buying Drakenguard 3 I ain't paying for that. I'm mostly worried about 8-4's track record of changing dialogue and character personalities in their localizations than the price though.

    • @LIONREV7
      @LIONREV7 7 лет назад +1

      I dont recommend Drakengard 3 , its shit and is concious about that (some parts mock the level design and so on) and the final boss is one of the most sadist/bullshit things a videogame can do to a player.
      About the localization, i actually like it, true they give Zero a bitch personality instead of an "empty" one but it still works.

    Another great video, man! Congratulations, but I must say the I did not like very much of the game, besides his story I just feel that I won't play to enjoy the story and suffer to play it. That said, I agreed with you and hope the Nier: Automata game be a great game, I play Drakengard back then and I like very much, didn't finish but that is another story. Good videos and good luck to you! =D
