When I make small items like these, I submerge a batch in a big jug of food safe oil, then tip the whole lot into a big funnel & it drains back into the oil bottle overnight. The funnel has a filter to catch any stray shavings ( a paper coffee filter makes a good filter). Nice job, thanks for posting.
Cool, I just finished a order for a couple of whiskey cups or mugs. I made them from a slab of white oak that I cut the pith out of, so I was able to make them without turning ingrain, I burned the inside of them and used a lacquer finish on the outside, I think they really came out good, especially for the first time making them. I took my time but there's no way I could come close to your speed. I enjoy turning, and just take my time, I make less mistakes that way. I wish there was some way I could send you some pictures of the cedar, and spalted wood bowls, and these mugs I made just to get your opinion on them. I like watching your work, of all the RUclips turners I've watched you are by far one of the best, and fastest. You make it look so easy.
Thank you very much for kind words and I'm far from the best or fastest, I'm still young and have much to learn... There is email on about me tab on my RUclips channel so feel free to send pictures.... Sounds like you done excellent job
Thank you very much for that ,I really appriciate that and I'll do a new video on skews, and trust me its only practice and once you get the basics down its a joy to use.... More in that video soon ☺️
That's amazing work. Doing something at that speed, with that accurracy, wow. Also, lovely wood. Hey, those 'waste' blank might become a small lid, or a plug in a funnel. ;-) Thanks for another instructive and amusing video.
To make the sanding faster, you could sand from the inside and outside at the same time, balancing the force you apply so that you don’t need a supporting hand but rather have two sanding hands equalling out so that you don’t break the piece off.
Rakia (or Țuică from Romania) translates to Plum Brandy. I know it's not always made from plums, but where I come from originally, it was always plums. Nice turning too :)
Very nice. Thank you for the video. I have 2 questions. What kind of wood is that? And when you put the drill bit in and make the center hole, are you holding that bit with your hand or did you make some sort of handle to hold the bit? Thanks again.
Great work, My family came to USA from Slovenia. My father spoke of making Slivovitz from plums and sometimes the first run was pure alcohol. How does the oil finish hold up to the alcohol. Dos the first drink carry a taste of the linseed and wax?
Awsome, so we are next door☺️ after its completely dry you don't task linseed and wax and most people wash it before use and that washes any remains of wax...its simple finish, after washing theres not much left on the wood so you basicsly drink from wood direct.... Šljivovica is the sort of moonshine , have you ever try it?
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning Yes, when I can afford to buy the best Šljivovica here in USA I buy some. It has been many years. My Father said that some of the first run Šljivovica they could use to run motorcycles with. Powerful stuff at 100%.
Marvelous stuff! I am slowly applying some of your "tricks" as I change from flat work to lathe turning. What is the source of your chuck jaws? I have not found them in my two catalogs.
I believe those area European brand maybe Axminister jaws. They look to be straight jaws with a grip inside. Jaws are usually two types straight or dovetailed. Myself I prefer dovetailed to grip a tennon or a recess. They come in so many shapes and sizes so there are a lot of options. You want ones that grip the way you prefer and trust. I hope you are finding turning fun. A piece of wood starts as a blank or odd shape and what it finishes as is always fun to discover )
I use vicmark chucks and jaws, these one in video are shark jaws, I believe 35mm.... Awsome chuck and I highly reccomend those... They have list of distributors around the world and they can send direct from factory in Australia as well....
Hi, how are you? I do put finish, its plain and simple, linseed oil wax blend, easy and brings nice color of this walnut , it will wash our quickly but it can also be renew easily.... Epoxy for me ruines the natural side of the wood and can be really expensive.... This works great....
Tomislav, I enjoyed watching the marvelous tool control. What oil do you use for drinking cups and does it stand up to not only liquid but also alcohol without damage to the wood? Thanks.
Thank you, most alcohols won't damage wood, and anything apart maybe epoxy will wash out quickly... Epoxy is expensive and for this kind of cups I use linseed oil and wax blend , it washes easy but also you can repair easy as that....
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thank you for all of your videos! I always thought alcohol would dissolve an oil and/or wax finish. Do you ever have any problem with that, like your drink tasting like the finish?
@@vicmitnick no, not really as its washed the finish is washed as well.... If you want to use it more heavy, then just use food safe oil and once that is dry in a cup its perfectly fine to use....😀

Its a great method to use a jug, in this case client wants something with wax on top , its time consuming but one by one 200 are finished😀

I really like that scraper you used on the inside very neat. You are a bad influence on me. I try and go fast when I shouldn’t. 🤣🤣
