Today we are making a casual Chinese dinner meal, which includes 3 delicious recipes. This will give you an idea of what a Chinese family eats for dinner on a regular day.
The reason I label it as "casual" is that I want to show you how to pair dishes together with whatever you have on hand and be able to swap replacement if you don’t have certain ingredients.
Also, I will give you lots of helpful tips and tricks so you can whip up a delightful Chinese dinner while keeping it easy and enjoyable.

When I was young, single, and broke, I used to love to make a simple dish by cooking rice with some rice wine and lap cheong added to the pot. It was delicious! This reminds of those satisfying and comforting dishes I made.

Hi Mandy, I think this is really great series: to show us what Chinese families would usually make for dinner.
Popular restaurant dishes and other specialties recipes are great, but learning how Chinese families would usually try to make for dinner is way more useful..

I always run the mushroom soaking water through a sieve to catch the dirt that inevitably has clung to the dried mushrooms. Shiratake are my favorite dried mushroom.

I really enjoyed this and I'd love to see more casual Chinese cooking videos like this. I understand Chinese food is made to be enjoyed socially, but unfortunately I live alone and don't always have someone to share food with, and it's not always practical to eat like this. Do you have any tips for enjoying Chinese food alone? My biggest concern is not wanting to waste food, but not wanting to eat the same food too often. Thanks.

I feel you. Im the only one among my family and friends that enjoys authentic asian cuisine so every time I cook something, I end up eating the same thing for the rest of the week and sometimes It even goes to waste and It really bothers me. I love cooking but the eating part can get tedious when you are the only one eating it.

Freeze what you can like the soup.
Or half the quantity of the recipe to suit your portion size.
Stir-fry of course tastes better fresh, but realistically you could probably eat it over 2 days.
Also, use frozen veggies to avoid waste. You probably can't substitute bok choy, but you can use broccoli in the stir-fry.
      Trial and error.

You can save some of the herbs like the spring onions by putting them in oil and keeping them in the freezer. She has a video on how to keep the basic ingedients good for a long while (soy sauce, oyster sauce, dark soy sauce, cooking wine etc). Check out her vid about the Master Sauce. That sauce is a life saver if you like the braised dishes, keeps well in the fridge/freezer for a long time.
The dumplings and buns are freezer friendly. When I have a free weekend I make those. Supposedly stays good for 3 months but since I have an electric steamer that's good for 1-2 people, I finish them in 3-6 weeks.
When it comes to freezing soup, you usually can keep the broth for a longer time if your noddles aren't there yet. Keep some dry egg noodles and save the broth.

    • @txjchacha1163

IDK how you are with dishes, but I personally don't like washing them. So I also keep a small jar with her Lo Mien sauce in the fridge and use that as sauce. It's better than those instant packs that have a lot of preservatives.
Also, check out her dishes that fry meats then add sauces, like popcorn chicken / sweet and sour pork etc. My family deep fries a lot of the meats during weekend then make the sauces separate. We just heat the amount of sauces needed + quick fry/airfry the fried meat so dinners are quick to make on busy weekdays.

I love this! Can you create more casual Chinese meals? I like to create healthy meals like this for food prep, so if there are leftovers, I can have this meal for subsequent meals. Like how a person orders chinese take out and eats the leftovers the following days . I don't mind the repetition.
ETA: I really appreciate you using the cured bacon in today's recipe. The steam tip was great! I've seen this in Asian stores and didn't know what to do with it. Is it possible to make some recipes with the cured bacon and other cured meats so we know how to cook with them? I've heard that you could use it in a stir fry with veggies. Thanks.

Super video. I stopped it several times to makes notes. Streaming sausage with rice is brilliant. Will do that tomorrow. Glad to see you used mushroom soaking water. Love the idea of knocking out a quick soup with just a few ingredients. I even have sun dried shrimp. The beef you used was beautiful. I worked as a butcher during college and that looked like prime NY strip.
