As the owner of an old Land Rover the ability to just cut myself new gaskets on demand would be very handy. Looks like it really is time to get a laser upgrade for my 3018 CNC, thanks for the inspiration.
Every time I decide to jump down the rabbit hole I end up on some odd video fascinated at what I see. Ford boy is responsible single handedly for half the gadgets sitting in my shop . Some influence I tell ya. Bravo Mr. Boy. Bravo.
If you can control the feed rate the slower you move the laser you can transfer more energy into the material, the balance between speed and power is the key for different materials.
@@jdmccorful i have a 10W laser if you move it slow and multiple passes on thicker material yes it works not efficient like a co2 laser but still has some uses, I also focus the point more for the center of the material as the laser does not move down each layer of the material it becomes more out of focus so the first layer is the easiest as its where you have most power so I start with it being a little out of focus so that as it passes through layers is become more in focus helping it cut as it losses power through thicker material. Just my conclusions from playing around with things. Even better is to add some Z movement to the lazer if possible then you could keep it all in focus, this is on my to do list 😁👌
Laser engraving and cutting is one of those things I haven't really messed around with yet. I assume like everything else I'll take the plunge sooner or later lol
I made some new felt seals for a lathe in the same way. They came out brilliant, but the smell! Like smouldering sheep... I'll do it outside next time :-)
Seen this before with the vinyl cutters and other more advanced versions of that style cutter can cut thin metal also... amazing... never thought about using a laser cutter. Another one of those right in front of your face moments. Wondering if a coating of something more absorbing the energy might aid in the cutting also? Great method for the right materials and even for marking out the pattern!
I use a cricut and an older version of "Make the Cut" . Cut many a gasket for briggs engines. However lawyers put an stop to this. Only works if you own a copy of the older software.
nice information,i tried this thick material also and had the same result, just not enough pen or power to go through. Now i need to find the right gasketpaper to make it work.Tip from me:when you need to replicate a oddly shaped gasket you can try to put the part on a scanner(if small enough) and build the gasket after the pic you get.
Nice! Just built a 1300x900mm dual tube 60/150 watt laser with parts from Cloudray. Great source for parts! I often cut large photographic film into tiny squares for Dentist, that still use the old X-ray system😱
ciao, puoi aiutarmi? non riesco ad importare il file dxf. il programma no riproduce il file correttamente e non capisco i parametri da utilizzare. il file lo genero con autocad. grazie
So you downloaded a file that already exist in order to make that gasket set? What if the gasket isn't on file? How would one go about getting a new gasket made? Could you make new gaskets if you had the old one or the the part the gasket came off of?
No, the file did not exist. I drew the gasket set with a CAD app. You only need a 2D CAD for this, many free ones out there. To make a replacement gasket I would measure and draw it out or it is possible to scan an existing one and convert it to a dxf file which the cutter can read.
Hi David What about thicker non asbestos material? Like the thinner gasket material which cut fine, what about this same material but thicker? You and your family please stay safe. Cheers Willy
@@myfordboy Was that the coke can? That may only have been the paint on the surface. Would be interesting to see if it could mark the other side of the can. A good video though, well demonstrated. Thanks.
I'm having no luck getting DXF files into the Vigo Works v3.0 software. No problem using the text edit and included JPEG files, but every time I try to open a DXF I end up with "No Image Open!", and all my JPEG's come out as rectangles (the outline of the area it was drawn on). Any hints much appreciated!👍😊
@@myfordboy That would be fantastic; thank you! I was using DXF files from Fusion360 and also Inkscape; I was trying a single circle from each, with no luck...!

I have now bought a Co2 laser and the power is far greater, easily cuts though MDF and Plywood in one pass and the gaskets also.
Brilliant 👍👍 This would make producing cylinder cap and valve chest gaskets for model steam engines dead easy. Cheers, Alan.

Superb... will it etch or mark steel or Ali ?
It can mark painted metal.
@@myfordboy thanks , had something done like that before.. wiped with thinner gone forever 🤦♂️ wanted a little more permanent
Hello.
Thank god we have your channel sir!
I'm learning a lot from you and l thank you for everything
The idea of a laser is nice, but a 'digital cutting printer' from hobbycraft would do the same job, and also nitrile gasket sheets, too.
Excellent project.Thank you.
don't tell Keith Appleton he hates lasers.
Nice work, thanks for your effort, it's. Its appreciated.

I am using ViaCad. I export the file as version R2011 into the Vigo software without any problem.
Are there different versions you can use to export?
Boy, I'd sure love to have one of those machines!

You would be able to cut that OK taking several passes if
necessary.
I wonder if anyone knows of a good laser engraving retrofit for 3d printers? It would be amazing if you could choose from 1-100watt lasers...
That is very cool - can you mark metal with it?
Yes see my previous video. ruclips.net/video/BK1lD9Y0t4o/видео.html

The spec says it cannot do curves so you need to change them to polylines. I can send you a sample DXF file to test if you wish.

That's really impressive. Thanks MFB. Another branch of technology I never even thought about. Mart.
Do think the laser would cut adhesive backed vinyl?
Not sure, I don't have any to try.
Would love to have one, but writing code is something I never wanted to do.
You don't need to write code. Most laser cutters come with simple 2d graphics software. Draw what you want and 'print' it out. Simples!
May I have price of this machine?
This is an old video, there are better models available now.
@@myfordboy which ones
Thanks my friend!
NO NO NO...Please put some shielding around that thing. Eyes matter. Also get some exhaust filtering going. There is a reason for this stuff.
what's the laser wattage on this machine?
I think it is 5w. This is an old video and better machines are available now.
Asking because I'm installing a laser head to my diy cnc plasma cutter so I can cut gaskets. Would be nice to be able to cut some thicker ones too
I would go for 10w or 20w if the budget allows.
Make sure the quoted wattage is the output not the input.
Yeah a lot of sellers advertise the input wattage. Thanks for the info 🙂
Peace be upon you, brother. Please show me how to make a furnace for melting Maadin at a high temperature

Both coupons show expired, have any others?
I have asked for a new one.
It should be working again now.
Somehow not having a laser enclosure seems dangerous
Only if you have eyes.
You can get warning signs: "Do Not Look Into Laser Beam With Remaining Eye" !!
Way cool

You could start a company making custom gaskets.
