I am a native of SoCal born and raised here. I lived in a suburb of Houston for 3 years. I was extremely homesick and just couldn't get used to it, so I moved back to California. Houston is very diverse. I never did get up to Austin, though I would love to visit someday. My dad was from Houston so I will always have love for Texas. But it isn't my home. And that's it. However, the people were amazing in Texas and I made some really good friends there. @@roxanardh I was stationed at George air force base near Victorville for 2 years when I was in the service. I had a blast walking around the high desert shooting jackrabbits and even a mojave green one time (after almost stepping on it....). You certainly don't have to worry about humidity out there. I also lived on Florida east coast for about 10 years working at IBM in Boca. Yes humidity, yes bugs. But air conditioning actually makes the homes more comfortable to live in than the high desert. But the real benefit of Florida is only found in the south east part and that is the tropical atlantic ocean which is awesome for fishing and diving. And then the Alice Town Bimini, Bahamas are only 48 miles from Miami and West End Grand Bahama is only 55 miles from Palm Beach. THAT is what puts south east florida way above and beyond the high desert. The diversity and adventure of the tropical ocean cannot be even remotely touched by anything cally has, much less the high desert.

However, the scenery is similar everywhere you go in FL. I'm fond of hiking mountains one day and then hanging out at the beach the next. The desert skies are amazing and I feel at home here. Never thought I'd say that. I fought being Califoricated for years but Cali won me over. Enjoy Fl, because it is absolutely beautiful and the wildlife is spectacular and diverse.

I had trouble understanding it when I moved from Texas to California and then after living in California for 20 years, I had the same trouble when I moved from California back to Texas. I had so much trouble in Austin, that I left again to Phoenix, I know maybe you think I am nuts...so here goes: Phoenix is an oven, Austin is a boiling pot - both are bad. Phoenix winter MUCH better than Austin, always sunny here. In 5 hour EZ drive, I can be in San Diego Beach or Las Vegas Strip. I can get 2nd home in Prescott Valley, 1.5 hours north, and fix the summer problem. In 5 hours, you are in the middle of Texas. Phoenix has great roads, Austin has terrible roads. well, I mean different real worlds to different folks. of course, the experience is different if you move to, let's say, Finland than to Texas, you need to keep an open mind to new.
I could walk in my Finnish 30000 people hometown seinäjoki 15celsius April evening in a pleasant breeze, from the middle of the city area to a home neighborhood area with some forest here and there in half an hour on designed bike lanes, and not see a single homeless, addict, or beggar, or kid street gangs, with even very few garbage anywhere, and it's not even especially wealthy municipality, 40k yearly income in dollars. but things still look pristine, the air smells fresh. harsh winters even keep the worst bugs away.
      nothing´s changed in 30 years.
the extreme, world´s highest taxes keep everything the same, inequality at a minimum. even corruption, the use of public funds, has been highly monitored historically for decades. there is no distrust between the public and public services. highest taxes means no mass immigration of any type of workers, no biggest businesses of the world, no billionaires, even millionaires are rare. but being outright poor is just as rare, too, most people own homes. even if it is a completely opposite philosophy, of, say, Texas, still 80% of people in seinäjoki live in their own homes, which is the only thing that is very similar to Texas. Smaller homes with smaller yards. No castles. All homes are historically built in an energy-saving way, because of the arctic -20c winters.
by the way, people, even children, cycle in those -20c winter! the municipality maintains the biking lanes, even during wintertime. contrary to what you might believe, it is actually very warm to cycle in winter clothes even in -20c temperatures, it feels like an oven. ( if you don't believe me, youtube search a video called "Why Canadians Can't Bike in the Winter (but Finnish people can)" the children's schools are filled with bikes, even middle of winter! even at age 8.
people very often underestimate, how different every single thing can be. it´s the trillion small things that make the ambiance of living.

There's ample opportunity out here that's why so many people from out of state flocked here in droves. But the cost of living out here is high and unless you're talented or really hard worker you will not survive. Therefore all those people moved to Texas.

I've traveled a lot of places and to me, the Southern California coastal cities easily have the best weather in the world. I lived in Santa Monica where the weather is 70 to 80 degrees all year round with 350 days of sunshine. Even better, because there is no humidity and so little rain, there is no standing water, which means no mosquitoes, flies, gnats, or any bugs flying around. It's quite incredible to realize there are no bugs in the air, which is why people can have a party with their patio doors flung wide open or a full outdoor dinner in the backyard and no one is batting flies away from the food or getting eaten up by mosquitoes. I think I killed five house flies in the 16 years I lived there. Those are the two most startling things for anyone from the east going to a California coastal city: the lightness of the air or atmosphere, and NO bugs everywhere.

It has gone to trash because the politicians from other states sending their homeless to California. I’m a long haul trucker and I’ve met and talked to so many homeless individuals tells me that their state government will pay for their bus or plane tickets one way trip to California so that they don’t need to worry about the weather. When I say California I mean the coastal areas. Let’s not talk about Texas and the rest of other states that their drivers are better then California drivers. I spend a descent amount of time in Texas because I own quite a bit of properties in Texas and Florida, Washington State and Oregon. Fortunately, I spent time in Austin during the summer and that was enough to let me know I had no desire to live there.
I did move to the Dallas area and lived there for @ 6 years solely because of work. Sorry, but I would have to agree with Brett's comments about things to do/see in TX. There really aren't many, as far as I'm concerned - that is unless you're talking about going to the movies, museums, other things to do INDOORS. (I drove over to New Mexico for vacations in the mountains.)
I lived in a community with a lot of families with kids. The community had swimming pools scattered around, but shockingly, in the summer I rarely saw ANY kids outside, let alone at the pools. I was talking with my neighbors and they commented that you don't go outside in the summer in TX. (I also lived in the California high desert - Lancaster, and it gets extremely hot there. But the heat in CA is nowhere near as oppressive as the heat in TX, due to the humidity. If you're out in the sun, CA is dam hot, but go in the shade and it's absolutely pleasant - even if it's 113 degrees outside. When it was over 100 in Dallas, it didn't matter where you were - it was oppressive and even at night, the humidity was ALWAYS there.) The cost of utilities "per unit of measure" may be comparable to other areas, but you're going to spend a LOT MORE heating and cooling your home in TX than you would in CA or a lot of other places.
To be honest, I didn't really have any major issues with "bugs" primarily because I didn't spend much time outside. Some people don't mind being drenched in sweat - I'm not one of them. I got up at 6:00 AM to mow the lawn to try to minimize being drenched in sweat. I was probably the only one who mowed my own lawn in my neighborhood. The only time I hired a mower was when I listed my Dallas house and moved to another state while the house was still on the market.
I haven't read "Brett's" entire article but I'm thinking his comments about a "Conservative Dystopia" are more than likely about TX in general and I would definitely have to agree if that's the case. Ditto with the drivers. I've been around a LONG time and the ONLY time I've ever seen someone run a red light was in Dallas - actually Addison and it was during the day on Belt Line, the main thoroughfare through town.
I personally don't think a lot of Texans are very open to outsiders. When a family bought the house across the street from mine, I went over to meet them and welcome them to the neighborhood. The only other "involvement" I had with them over the next 5 years was if their kids were selling lemonade or collecting for something. They never even bothered to acknowledge a hello after I first met them. (Having said that, the other neighbors on my block were much more personable. One family was also from out of state, the second was a young couple recently out of college, and the third was another couple who were native Texans - they were all great and I spoke with them regularly.)
Don't get me started on property taxes - they more than made up for a lack of a state income tax.
I now live on 5.5 acres in the mountains of Washington state and am generally happy as a clam.

Furthermore, I totally agree with your comment about the absolute crooks that are out there. I live in Mexico and everybody in the construction business is like that, I believe in the US the term that describes those kinds of crooks is "cowboy builders", and that's the norm here. What happened to the good old days when people did their job right? I'm so glad that I live in the Lake Norman area of Charlotte. We have very few of the problems that you listed about California or Austin here, other than damn Yankee transplants and Spring allergies. Although there are allergies in other regions as well .
If you're property values are too high, go outside if the city limits and try to work from home. We do this and save a fortune.
We don't have San Diego weather, but we don't have Texas weather either. We have hardly any snow and it doesn't rain much. The summer is lovely as long as you go out in the morning until 1PM and then go out 6 PM to 8PM you're fine. Twilight is when the mosquitoes come out and it gets humid then, but after 10PM it's perfect. Our temps usually stay in the upper 40s to low 90s, but typically you can expect 50s for winter and 80s for summer for highs. The "Real Feel" for sunny days can be as much as ten degrees warmer which is nice in winter, although I don't notice it in the summer. I prefer a sunny, warm summer so the humidity dries up from the sun.
Most of our water comes from the melting snow in the mountains and brought down by rivers. We have plenty of water thanks to our excellent water recycling and wells that are cheap to install. You can install a well for way under $5000 and use it for pool and lawn watering, but it only costs us $40 a month for county water for people who live outside city limits, so it would be a waste. Also most people from the Carolinas use grass that doesn't need much of any watering, although it turns a strange color in winter. City water, trash, and sewer only cost around $80 for an average-sized home and I thought that was expensive. Mind you we homeschool and work from home so that rate would be one of the highest. If you're water is expensive, put bleach deodorizers in your toilets and flush only when necessary. Also buy an energy-efficient, front-loading W/D, it hardly uses any water.
The one thing however you have to watch for in the Charlotte/Raleigh area are "community wells" aka "Aqua Water." This business will make it cheaper for the builders and a nightmare for the owners. They will charge people $200 or $400 a month to run your dishwasher once a week, take one shower a day, and wash three loads of clothes a week and the water looked dirty. I'd install my own well on the sly since the lots were huge and outside city limits. Luckily we did not buy that house, we just stayed there a few months to help a friend financially going through a divorce and foreclosure. We thought it would be a cheap way to save some money until our new home was completed. Boy were we wrong. We might as well got an apartment.
Thanks to the Yankees, property prices and taxes have risen, but you can still easily buy or built a house from the upper 100K and 200K and property taxes are still in the below 1% to 1.5% . That seems high, however NC has been building charter schools everywhere and our roads are never cracked or ugly.
Charlotte area does everything it can to get rid of blight. That's why everything looks nice a new. Also we are near mountains and oceans and Charlotte has tons of free family events and lots of things to do.

And they move from a place with high priced homes, where their home is smaller, but go where homes are cheaper so they buy a bigger home, so they don’t get the savings.

I just moved here in May from California (Fort Worth). It's still cheaper for daily things and that's where it really adds up. Car registration, gas, and plenty of other things. The amount of cheaper things to do here is outstanding as well. Now it's not "going to make you a millionaire" cheaper but it is significantly cheaper in many many aspects.

Exactly. People don't realize that just because a state, in this case TX, collects no state tax, it is more likely, it'll get its revenue by other means. High property taxes, compare even with CA. Pricier products and services. There are no holy grail states, really.

Born and raised in Austin. People can't drive here, and it's the worse it's ever been with so many Californians and New Yorkers here now who have never been on our roads...
Before COVID, you couldn't PULL OUT OF YOUR HOUSE with out being less than 5 minutes away from dead stop traffic somewhere... AND they have made it impossible to travel thru and around the city without spending 10-20 bucks on the 5 toll roads we have for highways...
Now the average home price is creeping up to a million bucks because ppl from Cali move here and pay over asking price for a home, IN CASH.
Ever since last year, the overall homeless presence has quadrupled and camps and tent-cities are under almost EVERY bridge in the city now, and getting worse. Property taxes are over a thousand a month in some areas and most of our beautiful water holes and scenic greenbelts are trashed and filthy with inconsiderate people acting as they please...
Honestly the list goes on and on but I'll stop there for now. Born and raised here, been here since 1990 and for the first time we are contemplating leaving

They're just like the people in CA. & my grandad is rolling over in his grave (E of Dallas) at what Texas has become in the last few years. & the Texicans who fought so hard for TX independence wouldn't recognize all the hate & intolerance so prevalent in TX nowadays.

I heard you have to replace your roofs often due to hail, etc. Also, no ability for solar panels because of weather too.
I was in Austin last month, visited Pflugerville and McKinney to visit family. Great areas and beautiful homes. Everyone was very nice.
I stayed in BeeCave and it was nice, but seemed to be a higher priced area.

That guy hit all the right buttons on both sides - 5th generation Texan here. He noted all the things we have come to hate about Texas and Texans, and all the things we love about California. Wonder how long they got stranded in our tarball beach hell-hole. All the things we fell in love with about SoCal... San Diego, Newport Beach. No AC needed. Throw open the patio doors and windows and enjoy cool foggy mornings and sun drenched afternoons. Outdoor malls. Stunning vegetation everywhere. A paradise on earth for outdoor enthusiasts. Monterey pines. Big Bear. Palm Desert. Coronado Island. Balboa. Hiking and biking trails. Skateboarding. Beach cruisers. Real mountains. Real coastline. Real ocean. Dog beaches. Sailing. Surfing. Live and let live sophisticated lifestyle. Mountain streams. Big Sur. Lake Elsinore. Catalina. Morro Bay. San Luis Obispo. San Simeon. Carmel. Monterey. Santa Cruz. Redwoods. Yosemite. Tahoe. Actual blue water... not filthy dirty brown with tarballs everywhere in the dirty stinking Texas beaches. The cost comparisons make a lot of sense. Maybe when Cali real estate values crash we can afford to move. Meanwhile enjoy this great March/April Tx weather because May-November it's too damned hot and humid to breathe and don't even think about tent camping at any of the lakes unless you like suffocating hot humid evenings, redbugs, ticks, and mosquitoes.
