Exotische insecten Er is een levendige handel in vlinderpoppen en vlinders. Maar zicht op de import ontbreekt. „Je kunt ze gewoon in je jaszak stoppen.”
    Eggs in a straw
Bart Coppens (27) is a Dutch butterfly youtuber with a „passion for insects”, as he writes in his bio. He has over 20,000 subscribers. In one of his most watched videos, he introduces himself and eight brightly colored butterflies, which he leaves on his face. He does not sell dolls himself, but he does explain to his viewers how to feed, raise and breed butterflies. He himself regularly buys from butterfly sellers and in this way got to know the trading world well.

Raising and breeding is keeping the specie alive, basically what the hobbie is about is to keep the species alive and near us when they are native, when they are not, we keep the specie in captivity and try to breed them to have the specie and help with conservation, not only of the butterfly or moth but also of the multiple plants the use as host plants.
That article is really bad and not well informative, they don't know much about that hobby and the positive impact is has, its true it has its negative part too, but the positive is really big.

That's very interesting that they would criticize without further research. It seems like they had a look at the hobby without research and they based it all off of that one look

You educate people. You are so accessible with your knowledge.
Most important, above all else, the most important contribution you give us is the knowledge that anyone who has a passion, devotes their time to discovering, for themselves, knowledge from personal experience and knowledge from others, indeed become not only experts in their passion but also world recognized experts.
Thank you Bart Coppens for sharing your genius and hard earned expertise in your chosen speciality.

    What a ridiculous article.
Unfortunately they train journalists to write in this kind of way to make the article be more sensationalist. They only think so far ahead as to make the person continue reading the article. They think they are being clever, but most people can see through their framing.
Telling the truth is not the aim of this kind of journalist, and they are becoming the norm.
the only point o this article is to sensationalise and make a story, even if it has no bearing to reality and they don't even care who or what gets damaged by what is written. that is why everything today is so polarised.

0:12 that reminds me of ants i caught. They make "kokkers" (dutch lol) out of dead moss as their nest entrance, those butterflies use the ants as hosts, the ants care for the pupa until they hatch, Myrmica schencki "kokersteek mier"

I have heard of some media throwing shade at butterfly and moth breeders. Some guy in a RUclips video said it wasn’t profitable which made me so pissed. Me I like to raise and breed butterflies then keep them as long as they can live for in captivity. I like keeping butterflies in captivity because I enjoy their beauty and believe they can be enjoyed, you don’t have to go to one of those fancy butterfly houses in the middle of the city. You can have one at home, sure it’s not gonna be as big or diverse but at the end of the day, it’s all yours. It flat out annoys me that some individuals want to demonize us for having this unique hobby not many share. So I have an immense hatred for those who cannot properly understand our cause and hearing this fuels me to collect more species legally for captive breeding to spite. I’m glad you made this video Bart as this is an unprecedented foil against us who have a butterfly and moth breeding hobby.

    • @BartCoppens

Sadly this is the case. The media loves to throw hobbyists under the bus, while large multinationals continue to deforest, turn forest into plantations, pastures or parking lots, they point the finger of blame to the small guy who breeds or collects them :)

I read through the article and i don't even see the point she's trying to make.
That there are bad eggs when it comes to catching and breeding these animals? That the trade list is incomplete?
And why the heck did she even mention you? You seem to have no relevance to her article, she even points out that you're not a seller.
Because you buy insects? You're a single person hobbyist breeder. Your purchases are probably statistically irrelevant...
    But ProTip my friend:
Try to limit your insults, like the garbage man comparison. All it does is give them unnecessary ammo to shut you down.
You're better than that my friend!

@@MaverickHunterXZA Yeah I agree. I was just at my highest level of saltiness today. In my life I faced a lot of ignorance and scrutiny from people who claim it's unethical or animal abuse to keep butterflies or moths in captivity. It gets tiresome having to explain it and to justify it to people who don't even understand these animals. And sometimes the frustration boils over and I become passive agressive. To me this hobby means a lot. To add insult to injury they lured me into this and used me to prove a point in an article I disagree with. That's what made me feel like lashing out to people. But next time I'll try to be less salty

omg this is going way to far and I have to say this. Not to mention other lies said before, "because butterflies enter the country as pupa" (note: LEPIDOPTERA enter blablablah, not butterflies since butterfly/moth is the adult, reproductive stage of a Lepidoptera species, while pupa or chrysalis are the moult before the adult stage), ", it's impossible to recognise the protected species" is one of the biggest lies I have ever heard of. Many pupae and cocoons (for eg, who as an entomologist, would not recognise an Argema mittrei cocoon, or even pupa) are often recognisable by their shape, size, color, and this combined with geographical location of collected/farmed pupae, as well as other factors, allow a species to be recognised.
EDIT: yeah you already explained in the video xD

I hate these people who want to ruin our hobby. The hobby does the opposite of promoting poaching and destroying the natural population. These arthropods will go extinct one day due to the actual problems like development, agriculture, climate change, etc. and they will only exist in the trade, but absolutely everyone wants to ruin the hobby in every way. This virtue signaling doesn't do anything, it's saying poaching is bad (true) and then ruining captive breeders, farmers, and hobbyists.
What the hell did we do?
Some Poecilotheria is going extinct... oh but it's the hobbyists fault that their natural environment is being destroyed. And therefore all captive bred species should be taken away and made illegal to trade... UH BECAUSE REASONS
They just hate us for no reason, they actually hate us.
    What the fuck.
I love arthropods. If anything the hobby should be given special legal protections, not having to jump through hoops and have to feel dirty.

Its true that captivity and hobbyist can threaten environment. Captivity and hobbyist can be good if u do it in controlled (closed) environment. But some of hobbyist dont do that. They let their moth and butterfly free. If this was native species, its good. But if its imported or non native, it could be bad. Example if u imported and breed monarch butterfly and u release them. It will do harm for bird in there and not good
