The tempo of the fugue is shocking, yet correct. And he can play it that way. I think Bach intended this. It's in 6/8 which is always felt in TWO. Most organists play it too slowly. Fox was a stunning virtuoso. But no one needs me to say that. The registrations are fantastic too. Sounds like a concerto. And I've personally never heard anyone NAIL the final pedal passage "a tempo" the way he does here. And then he goes right into the 32nd note finale. Amazing.
I've been listening to performances of this prelude and fugue for close to 60 years and still keep coming back to how Fox plays it. How the man was able to keep the intricacies of Bach's contrapuntal organ masterpiece straight in his head is something I will never understand. Fortunately, Fox lived during the age of high fidelity stereophonic analog recording before digital took over and spoiled the sound. I have the LPs on which performances such as this were captured and hope to be able to play them for years to come.
Moronic. Since when do people laugh at organists? You aren't expressing yourself correctly. And what exactly do you mean by "real musicians?" I'm a real musician, and I find this performance utterly fantastic. Did you even listen? It's shocking. His technique blows away anyone I've seen play this fugue. The tempo alone is extraordinary. And he never missed a note. Are you sure you're not thinking of Liberace? Are you sure you don't mean Cameron Carpenter? Because HIS actual musicianship is in question, to me. I'm not even a fan of Fox because he is was too much a showman, and much of his non Bach work is not right, imo, but you clearly didn't listen to this video. You already made up your mind.

Meravigliosa e straordinaria interpretazione del grandissimo Virgil Fox!
Un virtuosismo e una tecnica perfetta, e tutto a memoria! Incredibile!

I will love his playing forever. For me he is the gold standard no matter what the pedagogues say.
Screw the music snobs. I agree with you, Virgil's the best.
@@Jalapablo Wrong.
He utterly gets this piece, in every capacity.
That means YOU utterly get this piece too? Hmm.
Fantastic. What an incredible performance and musician!
Great ver. Nobody could write a foogie like Batch.
I miss Virgil. Hope he's blowing the doors off "upstairs"
Dommage qu'il soit joué si vite, ce qui enlève une certaine profondeur à des passages et enlève le côté grandiose de cette oeuvre extraordinaire.
This is why real Musicians laugh at Organists.
I understand. They laugh like "I could never, ever equal this in a million years."
