Thanks for trying to dispel the rumors about the subject of King of the Never-Wills. I’m with you. I don’t think Taylor is a vindictive person. Go watch the Substack Live from a few days ago. He briefly addresses some inspiration for this song.
Good additional context to have - I knew some of them were, but didn’t know that they all were. I subscribe to the Substack but am admittedly only an occasional reader - will have to check out the live!
Well constructed review. Agree about "Hilarity Ensues." However ... and I am a pretty major Dawes fan ... I consider "The Game" one of their best ever. A top tier track, just below "A Little Bit Of Everything" and "When My Time Comes." Also, guitar work (riffs!) on first two tracks could merit more mention.
Appreciate the feedback! First time doing a review this way. I‘ve come around on The Game a bit since filming this - the verses are good storytelling. It’s really just the refrain that bugs me, but that could be because I work in startup and I hear those types of sayings repeated constantly haha. Agreed on the guitar work - some good playing throughout.
This album release flew under my radar. Glad I saw this video pop up!
Not my favorite Dawes album necessarily, but definitely worth a listen!
These songs were all written before Wylie & Lee announced their departures.
