❤👍👍 I love those old tape mechanisms and used to like unpuzzeling their logic. one of my biggest achievements is when I wanted to repair one of my dad's players (a Hitachi) and when I just removed the mechanism and then a holding piece inside, it just fell off my hand and had to look for every little spring on the floor without being caught I opened that player. and guess what ? it was almost midnight and thinking it's gonna be a quick fix.... uggghhh I'm almost 50 now and still feel the stress I had that night :D (was 15 by then) at the same time very proud to have put it together and in a good working condition 5 hours later :D lovely days...
What I love about these vids is how clever humans can be, theirs something so satisfying on pushing a button and the sound of “clicks, whirs, clunks” etc instead of silence... I had reel to reels years ago, press play and off it went... you feel you achieved something 🤗 you felt you owned it, sadly I succumbed to new generation equipment, the only think I cling on to is my 💽 Sony minidisc player and use it to this day alongside my media players, even my kids say “what’s that” when I put the disc in the slot, old tech yep, and showing it’s age as the vfd has started to fade (think it might be time for a recap or something) keep up the good work with the vids my friend and stay safe 👍
I have a Sony tc-k711s with a similar transport to yours and mine has another belt which goes from the motor to one of the capstans and the capstans are tied are driven with a big belt, the small belt was changed when I got the deck and it didn't work properly, then I've ordered a belt kit from Ebay and the idiot seller sent me the wrong kit for another Sony machine and it didn't have the belt I needed, so I've installed another belt which is a super tight fit but it works... The wow&flutter is about 0.2% which is insane and the speed varies as the motor heats up, oh well such is life. :)

hi what would cause a 226 BW Samsung monitor to work fine until you shut it off? Then take a half-hour to achieve full brightness and flicker all the while it is warming up? I replaced both boards in it and was fine for 6 months
I see in the video that there is a plastic protective cover over those live power cord terminals. Good how u have got that belt cleaned up of that oil on it,,,and a bit of it missing,,,and still plays good for now,,,until u can get a replacement belt some months down the track due to the corona virus outbreak pandemic. Luckily I have quite a few sets of new and used belts for repairing tape decks,,,turntables,,etc. Won't need to order replacement belts at least for a while,,,depending on how many tape machines,etc, i do receive for repair here altogether.

I bought that same JIS screwdriver set a while back for working on a WM-D6C after i failed to resist the temptation to use a ceramic tweaker JIS on it. That ceramic driver fit those tiny screws so well that the tip broke off only when I moved the driver off-perpendicular... I haven't had issues with the rubber grip slipping on mine yet since I only use it on things small enough not to need that kind of torque. If that deck were mine and I had nothing else to do (or a ton of other decks that were in better shape) then I'd take that whole mess apart and clean it. After having changed all the rubber parts out in that walkman, I understand not wanting to go through with that...

I worked on a dc-6 walkman forever prob beyond repair only to wind up stripping the smallest screw on the main driver belt. my last step of course it's been sitting in my tool box for over a year now I pull it out sometimes to give it a go but it aint happening
I put them up on craigslist and if they don't move I toss the stuff I don't want. This probably has people upset but can't hang on to everything. Some goes to value village but with the covid thing nobody is taking donations so the bin is where unwanted stuff will end up.
One of the worst failures that caused wow and fluter and even sliding of the tape from head and pitch roller was a cotton felt disc hidden between the gears of the mechanism.Since the speed motor is constant so the capstans also and cassette if is in the start the movement of the winding tape is a lot faster compared when the tape reaches the end the mechanism needs a special reducing gear that gives the necessary movement through friction between two discs having inside this cotton felt.With the years this cotton or fleece like disc is getting harder and the movement transmission is doing without any reducing causing wow and flutter.If this failure can destroy all the sound quality of the deck making it useless and is most audible in the tape ending.
LOL, the things people do with WD40. I've had the U-matic oil experience. Someone oiled several of the roller bearings, turned test tapes into lasagna and ripped the oxide and binder right off the tape and put it into same roller bearings, ceasing them completely... but only after several passes of REW and FF. The tapes would play OK even when the edges were half-destoryed so one has to look inside to catch this problem. It could get destructive to the deck and will want to cut into the tape-bearing surfaces and then the video heads won't like it eather. No head drum wraps or anything sus with the drum, which surprised me a little.
If you have old belts that's hard to replace, maby a bit stretched or oily... You can try to boil them in hot water for 15 - 20 minutes. that will freshen them up.
That I do not know. The shop I used to buy belts from closed their doors and a rip off repair shop bought all their inventory and is hoarding them all. They will not sell you a belt, but they will gladly put one in your tape deck for 150.00 in labour charges.
@@12voltvids Russel Industries in NY took over the one-time BIG source for belts and tires and still offer them under the old PRB brand. West Coast Resale (westcoastresale on eBay) is also a big supplier. Many electronic component sellers have them as well. If you need flat belts getting those assortments is probably a waste. They are usually too narrow to work properly.
Doesn't look like that deck saw much love in its later years judging by the scratches on the top, and why wouldn't you engrave your info on the back, or bottom.

This was to eliminate the clunk of a solenoid used on older machines to engage the head and pinch roller, or the plastic gears and solenoids to control these gears to drive the cam gear from the flywheel. These ones made even more noise.
Seeing the amount of oil, it seems you could have saved some work by dumping a bag of kitty litter into it. Obviously just kidding. Nice job as always.
Hi! i have problems with one of my sony wm-7's. I replaced all old electrolytic capacitors with new ones. I cleaned the pcb with denatured alcohol. I checked for shorcircuits but everything seems to be fine. I also checked every single cap with capacitance tester and all of them are in spec. There are no bad solderjoints either because i fixed all of them. However i am getting weird popping noise in headphones. I am out of ideas. Wait another deck with a SIN engraved onto it? What the heck. Why do people do that? I got a Nakamichi i found at a thrift store with someone's SIN number engraved on the back plating. I thought it was a phone number at first, with a missing digit? But with this i realized, its not a phone number, its someones SIN.
In more innocent times they marked valuable or theft-prone items (cameras, audio gear, TV sets, etc.) with their I.D. number so it could be identified by police, pawn shops, etc. if found and (hopefully) returned or at least earn the low-life that took it some downtime from society. That was before people started using those numbers for crimes too.

A long time ago i had a neighbour appear at my door because the record button was jammed on his cassette deck, he wanted to know if spraying wd40 would help, EeeeK. I said many times No do not do that you will kill the deck. Just cover the square hole on the back of the casette tape with sellotape. Some people are just born stupid.

Yes, and it would remove all the necessary lubricant as well, so then you have to completely disassemble the whole mechasnism to re-lube it, and it would ruin the rubber parts, maybe some plastics as well. Instead it needs to be disassembled to get that control pulley out and clean it thoroughly with 90+% IPA. Also all of the motor pulleys and the flywheels needs to be cleaned. Spraying this beauty with oil was really a crime. It seems like one of the last upper midrange Sony decks that was actually good. Aluminum faceplate, 3 motors, mostly metal mech, and diecast flywheels. A few years later they started to use mostly plastic mechanisms, in which even the "flywheel" was plastic (= no flywheel, so wow and flutter gone through the roof).
@@12voltvids Well, that would be the manufacturers fault for using substandard plastics, etc. As a mechanic I use brake cleaner on lots of plastic and rubber car parts and never have any damage. Of course I use non-chlorofluorocarbon versions of the cleaner. I don't think it's too different from tuner cleaner.

No thumbs down from me. I am surprised it worked at all. What pratt would spray WD40 into a cassette deck? Well, there is one at least!!!
Maybe someone has tried to lubricate the gears and was lazy enough so he just sprayed the whole mechanism with oil.

Why would they use a 3 motor system? 1 i believe is to load the tape

They are not that fragile. Short of dropping them on concrete it would be tough to damage them just setting them on the bench.

I would have hosed that thing down with brake cleaner, that would remove the oil quickly.
And attacked the plastic.
