  • Vintage 1968 21" Toro Whirlwind Mower, model 19221. Features an "Inpulse Starter" crank start and cast aluminum deck. The gentleman I purchased this from was the original owner and provided the original manual, repair documentation, some spare parts, and even the original bill of sale from 1968! I'll be keeping this in my personal collection, as it's the same model mower I grew up with and used roughly between 1985-1995. Crank starters were discontinued in the early 1970s and this oil reservoir seems to be Toro-specific, so I consider this to be a rather unique lawnmower.

    Man, this brings back memories! My grandparents had this exact mower back in the early '70s and my uncle would mow the lawns. I loved walking along with him as he mowed. I remember being fascinated by that mower...the crank start, the oil reservoir with the push button and the hose port for washing it. I can remember always trying to get him to let me crank it and push the lever down to start it...he started to let me do it after awhile, but one day when my mom brought him over to mow our lawn with it (our mower had broken down) and I got a little over anxious and decided to crank it up without telling him. Before he came back from the bathroom, or whatever, my mom called me into the house for something...he went out to start it and it wouldn't crank anymore, because I had already done it, so he thought something was wrong with it, and went to my dad's shed and got some tools and started taking it apart. Well that stored energy let loose and it cut his finger up pretty good...I felt so bad about that. Looking back, it seems so dumb to have not tried the lever to see if it would start before he took it apart, but he was only 12 or 13 yrs old at the time and didn't know any better.
    Anyway, great old mower! Thanks for posting this.

    My dad had his for over 30 years and every time I brought it in for its annual check-up the people at the shop marveled at the machine. I especially loved how it didn't have the auto shut-off gear which made it easy to take off the bag bag, empty it and then latch it bak on without having to turn off the mower. Getting replacement side chutes and the bags were the hardest part. The only reason we ended up getting rid of it was when the engine block cracked. They just don't make them like this anymore.

    I used to work in my dad's shop back in the 60's and 70's and we were one of the largest Toro lawnmower dealers in the country. I remember all these models and many more. For instance, there was a very cool and rare Toro lawnmower that rode on a cushion of air (FlyMo) and had no wheels. You just started it and it hovered over the grass and cut it. I've totally overhauled every Toro mower out there, way back since the 60s. The '65 magnesium deck one is very rare. I used to have many of them and they sold for big money even back then. I'll bet there are probably none left other than in the Toro museum.

    • @burlingtonbill1
      @burlingtonbill1 4 года назад +1

      Were the magnesium decks that much lighter than the aluminum-alloy decks that followed when they quit producing the mag decks? Were the magnesium decks extra-prone to cracking? If so, do you remember where on the decks that were most likely to crack?

    That is a nice Whirlwind! Our neighbor purchased one just like that one in 1968, from Cornforth's Key shop, Enid, Oklahoma. It cost $109.95 plus tax. Wish they still built them so nicely.

      The sales tax is only 6.875 right now in NJ, 50 years later. So a half centurt later and its only double what it was. 10 years ago it was still 6%.

    Yes those are kind of rare. I just found one for nothing and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. It is a 21" self propelled and looks the same except it has the pull Starter. The oil bath cleaners and conical oil filling feature really set these apart. We had one when I was a kid, too! Best mower Ever.

I had one that had the front wheel power drive system and that very same engine. it had a lever on the other side to engage the drive. allways thought that "S" Shaped blade was cool. anyhow that's one great Whirlwind you have and thanks for posting it and bringing back some fun memories for me

    By the way, the plastic oil reservoir was meant to aid the customer to check the oil level by simply pressing the plunger on the side of the funnel for a second or two with the lid firmly in place. If the engine needed a little oil it would give one or two little blubs and that was it. However many people removed the fill cap on the funnel, filled the funnel with oil then pushes the fill plunger till that 4 ozs of oil went into the crankcase then they repeated it again and again (this all done with the air tight cap left off the funnel). They most often put so much oil in the motor they locked it up.

    I worked on those units back in the day, the shop that I worked at, was a "TORO DEALER". the reason why you do not see many of those units was due to the "OIL FUNNEL". those damn things blew up a lot of engines( rod out) due to lack of oil in the crankcase. when I would rebuild one of those engines ( providing that the crankcase was not cracked), the first thing that was replaced, was the oil funnel, and replaced with a dipstick!!!!

    I used to have exactly same crank start mower but self propelled model (around 1970 to 1971). It have two "T" shaped levers on handle console, Right for Throttle/Choke/Starting and Left for Self Propelled.. I love this mower so much and been using it for my lawn business when I was 13 years old.. It was so easy to start. The engine was 3 1/2 HP Brigg and Stratton 4 cycle and have "S" shaped blade. I was told by my dad that "S" shape blade was hard to balance between sharpening. It can mow 10" to 12" grass easily (even wet grass too). It was very economical, one little tank enough to mow 3 lawns (5,000 to 8,000 sq ft). I love its gas gauge on cap (it's a plastic "step" indicator that you can peep on top of rectangular window to see how much gas left) Its oil reservoir was one of the best thing that you don't have to lug can of oil with you when you do lawn business, just press and hold button on bottom and watch the clear cap for bubble stop bubbling when it's full. The self propel is one speed and it kinda go a little fast because I tweaked the carburetor to make engine run faster. I even tweak its idle until it puttt---------puttt-----putt-----putt----- just close to dying (It can go on all day). It refuse to die on extremely slow idle. I think I managed to have engine idling at 50 RPM. I had this mower for 16 years until its piston arm broke in half.
    It seem today new mower tend to be more powerful and seeing between 5 to 8 hp and it can't cut 10" grass and hard to start sometime, arm get tired of pulling rope. Also it's not economical either. It uses lot more gas than vintage Toro mower. I missed vintage mower more than ever. I even have Toro Pace setter mower (self propelled mower), The only thing I like about my current mower is that it starts quickly with few pulls and push the handle to engage self propel at your own pace. But still Vintage Toro mower still rated the top of all mower that we own today.

    • @Mr_Tecumseh
      @Mr_Tecumseh 6 лет назад +1

      Thats a Tecumseh, those engines on these are Tecumseh not Briggs.
      You cant run an engine down below around 1100 rpm before its to slow to keep going, 50 rpm is impossible.
      Mowers today arent even rated in horsepower anymore, but the biggest engine on a smaller walk behind today is 190cc which equates to about 5.5 horsepower. Theirs no 8 horsepower engine on any 21 or 22 walk behind mower. The engine on these were 3.5 their Tecumseh LEV35 engines.

    This is just too freaking strange. We had almost the same mower, except it was the model with the electric start. The battery was mounted on the handlebar panel with the throttle. It had to be there for balance because it was so freaking heavy!! It was good for maybe 3 or 4 starts before it needed to be brought into the house and placed on a charger. The mower itself was a gem. The 'lectric start system was not quite ready for prime time. We finally just used the pull, which was quite easy.

    • @Mr_Tecumseh
      @Mr_Tecumseh 6 лет назад +1

      Electric start on mowers is still the same way today, more hassle than their worth. Always having to charge the battery, the extra weight from it. It just easier to pull the rope or wind it up than bother with those things.

    • @Histandard2011
      @Histandard2011 Год назад +1

      @@Mr_Tecumseh Did you know that they sold a 12V battery powered weed trimmer as an option for these mowers. The trimmer uses about a 4" thin metal blade and the thing would trim for quite a while if the start battery for the mower was fully charged. Don't forget in those days batteries were not what we have today. Our. mower shop sold hundreds of the 21" self propelled units each year. Pull, crank and electric start. In the 60's they used a 3.5HP Tecumseh LAV35.40152E

    I just found a 68 Whirlwind almost identical to this one at the curb. Only difference is the one I found is self propelled dront wheel drive or as they call it, pow-r-drive.
    Mine has a rope recoil, the recoil decice goes under and isnt on top like newer engines. The thing is immaculate too.
    I'm probably going to sell it. These are really cool mowers.
