Just got my 1993 Kawasaki kx250 two stroke and I love it. Been riding for only a year and a half. Went from a 2003 Yamaha TTR 150 to the kx250. Will never go back to a four stroke.
Those were the baddest bikes on the planet man...still are in my book! I raced 250 expert class from mid-70’s to 81 and the open class was dominated by that mother right there...a good friend had one and I loved riding it. 🤘🤘🤘
Brings tears to my eyes, and good memories. I was a flag boy at MX 338 when these were new, and I always loved the looks and the sound of those beautiful 80's Maicos. Beautiful bike!!! Thank you for sharing that beautiful restoration👍

Put a big smile on my face. I remember always thinking how big those looked in the pits. Then pulling up to the starting gate on my Honda and one of these lined up next to me and thinking " damn that still looks big". I never owned one myself but I remember being 16 and evey old dude in the old timers class had one.

I used to ride with my mates I was Honda CR mad My mates had Suzuki RM and Yamaha YZ bikes. My old CR was letting me down here and there . An old boy I worked with said he had a old Maico . I'd not heard of the name and didn't realize what this machine was. Sorry people in just dribbling on about my life. The bike in the video just bought back the good old days. Wow! Absolutely beautiful! When I was a kid back in 1979 I was riding my RM80 and there were two guys that had identical Maico 490s. One of the guys wrecked and had a compound fracture to his fibula. They both went to the hospital and asked me to watch their bikes as I was the only other person around. I sat there and watched them until the sun was going down. Before I left I wheeled both of their bikes into the bushes so no one could see them and steel them. I went back the next day after school and they were gone. I always wondered if they got their bikes back or they got stolen. Anyway that’s my little story on the Maico 490. Again you did a great job on this one. Beautiful!
I'd love to have had it now I was a kid back then and got mine running so I could go to the track. It was old then compared to the bike's flying about but I was chuffed I got my own bike even though it was like jumping a house not over one. Can I put up a pic some how. Got more stories of her in my life
I've had four new Maico 490s they were branded in the UK as Alpha 1 rather than Spyder. Bought them in 1982/83. I raced them for a good few years in motocross and enduros. They were brilliant machines in that era, and won many championships. Best handling and most useable power of any open class two strokes of the time. Bill Brown m/c still sells parts and high quality frames for these bikes to the current day in the u.k. and the Maico still competes in many classes of competition.
What a bike? My young days in South Africa was all about these Maicos. 😂 I was a Maico fanatic. Had most of them at some point in life. Ahh what great memories. 😅

My friend had one years ago, we couldn’t kick start it so we bumped it, throttle stuck stupidly he kept a hold of the bike both feet to one side sitting on the seat, wheelied into a fence and broke 3 ribs. Crazy power
I recall the big Maicos running at my local track many years ago, we always called the open class bikes rototillers because you knew what they were from a long ways off by the giant rooster tail of dirt.
A Beauty! Zee Germans made them right until 1981 though. Unfortunately, issues among family members caused the demise of the brand. Enter M-Star which never took off as them Japan’s big four were already dominating the dirt bike market. Too bad no manufacturer ever tried to bring Maico back!
My old Maico had a leather jacket on the tank . Massive rear sprocket like nearly as big as the wheel. P.S I'm only jumping in on your vid as I had one to . You have made your one look fantastic and I let my one go. We dad got the hump . I still never knew what year I had but it was an Animal but so heavy when I jumped it
I was 20 and riding with a friend who lived where there was a lot of empty city property and mounds of dirt that was dug up for drainage. We would ride three wheelers morning to evening on our days off and anytime we could. Some guys down the street had dirt bikes and wold ride a course we had beat down through the ditches and piles of dirt. 2 of their friends showed up with a new Maico Open class like this. In th ensuing hour after unloading it they both broke their legs trying to kickstart it without boots.
The chain sounds like it's a little tight that's neither here nor there what a beautiful bike awesome restoration and you just can't beat the 2-cycle motor when it's running right that one there is sounded pretty good have a great night take care buddy

Right on.had a yz 465 and a 490 gs enduro.the yamaha was a light switch.it could flip you over in 4th gear if you not ready.the mail was much another and being enduro it had more flywheel.gearing was wide ratio.and I'm 6 feet 2 and i had trouble touching both feet on ground.
@@rickkowalske4116 I finally bought a roached IT465 engine for the cylinder and head....had it bored/new piston/modified head....put it on the YZ motor and it tamed it quite a bit. Cleaned up the porting. Flywheel was the same...shoulda put a weight on it. When I sold it, it was still in perfect shape and gave the kid that bought it both barrels/heads. He was a young buck and could handle it for what he needed it for. He says it will still keep up with anything out there. I'm an old trail rider and it was gonna kill me.
@@tomnekuda3818 man I know.that yz was so fast I would run with my buddies cr500.I bought a wr500 yamaha new in 1993.it was basically a 465 bored out with front and rear disc brakes.wide ratio trans and the revised rear shock( rising rate).it goes real fast but dosent hit like the 465 doesn't turn like the 465 and i miss those 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear hole shots with the close ratio trans.

My friend had this same bike and he would ride it on the streets of Elmira, NY, at night terrorizing the neighborhood's.

Yes, didn't notice how tight the chain was untill I dropped it off the stand. It's properly adjusted now

I was rode a 490 back in the day was a sponsored rider until I had a bad crash at matchams park in the uk ended in hospital for 4 months they were an Awsum bike never needed first gear
