I hear that! I was 15 myself - saw the write up In one of the bike mags and that's all I wanted. The cost brand new was nothing compared to bikes now. I just should have got a job & bought it. Great bike, great memories. I was riding a Hodaka Combat back then.

Anyway this is your vid and you have made a brilliant restoration.
I used to ride with my mates I was Honda CR mad
My mates had Suzuki RM and Yamaha YZ bikes.
My old CR was letting me down here and there .
An old boy I worked with said he had a old Maico .
I'd not heard of the name and didn't realize what this machine was.

Wow! Absolutely beautiful! When I was a kid back in 1979 I was riding my RM80 and there were two guys that had identical Maico 490s. One of the guys wrecked and had a compound fracture to his fibula. They both went to the hospital and asked me to watch their bikes as I was the only other person around. I sat there and watched them until the sun was going down. Before I left I wheeled both of their bikes into the bushes so no one could see them and steel them. I went back the next day after school and they were gone. I always wondered if they got their bikes back or they got stolen. Anyway that’s my little story on the Maico 490. Again you did a great job on this one. Beautiful!

I've had four new Maico 490s they were branded in the UK as Alpha 1 rather than Spyder. Bought them in 1982/83. I raced them for a good few years in motocross and enduros. They were brilliant machines in that era, and won many championships. Best handling and most useable power of any open class two strokes of the time. Bill Brown m/c still sells parts and high quality frames for these bikes to the current day in the u.k. and the Maico still competes in many classes of competition.

We would ride three wheelers morning to evening on our days off and anytime we could. Some guys down the street had dirt bikes and wold ride a course we had beat down through the ditches and piles of dirt. 2 of their friends showed up with a new Maico Open class like this. In th ensuing hour after unloading it they both broke their legs trying to kickstart it without boots.

When those came out I was riding a 1980 YZ465 and really enjoying it. I lusted after the big Maico Spider every time I saw one or read about one. Keep the Faith. P.S. Finally got to ride one....liked the power. The YZ was a light switch.......on or off....much easier to 'sneak up' on the power of the Maico.

Right on.had a yz 465 and a 490 gs enduro.the yamaha was a light switch.it could flip you over in 4th gear if you not ready.the mail was much another and being enduro it had more flywheel.gearing was wide ratio.and I'm 6 feet 2 and i had trouble touching both feet on ground.

@@rickkowalske4116 I finally bought a roached IT465 engine for the cylinder and head....had it bored/new piston/modified head....put it on the YZ motor and it tamed it quite a bit. Cleaned up the porting. Flywheel was the same...shoulda put a weight on it. When I sold it, it was still in perfect shape and gave the kid that bought it both barrels/heads. He was a young buck and could handle it for what he needed it for. He says it will still keep up with anything out there. I'm an old trail rider and it was gonna kill me.

@@tomnekuda3818 man I know.that yz was so fast I would run with my buddies cr500.I bought a wr500 yamaha new in 1993.it was basically a 465 bored out with front and rear disc brakes.wide ratio trans and the revised rear shock( rising rate).it goes real fast but dosent hit like the 465 doesn't turn like the 465 and i miss those 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear hole shots with the close ratio trans.
