It bugs me that the 11’8” bridge light up sign says “OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN”. That doesn’t convey “This means you!”, if a driver notices it, they may think it’s just a general warning like “slippery when wet”.

When I first started trucking about 14 months ago, I knew I was 13'6". I came across a bridge marked 13'6" near Grand Rapids, Michigan. Unfortately, the only sign that I saw was after the last possible point I couldn't made a turn to avoid it. From my vantage point after I cleared the last intersection, it did not look like I was going to clear the bridge. So I called local police, and they were able to send 2 cars out to block traffic at the 2 intersections on either side of me so that I was able to execute a u-turn and be back on my way. From start to finish, the ordeal lasted only about 30 minutes. Moral of the story, better to be safe than sorry.

@@Notthisguyeither Don't count on it. One of the bridges below Erie Ave., B St. I think it was, used to get trucks stuck quite regularly when I was a kid. If you went under the bridge and measured it, you'd get exactly what the sign said but still get trucks a couple of inches shorter than that would get stuck. The problem was that the road went up in both directions away from the bridge. The trailer would clear the bridge going in, but as the truck started rising on the other side the trailer would be pushed up into the bridge. The longer the trailer, the worse off they were. The cops eventually knew it and would just let air out of the rear trailer tires and reverse the truck out if they hadn't hit going too fast and wedged themselves.

But before any trip while still parked, I review the route on Google Maps looking for potential conflicts like bridges, railroad tracks,, etc. and then set the phone in it's mount so it can serve as a backup and to give traffic warnings. You obviously want to follow the truck route from your GPS and Google is just a backup and can help if your GPS drops out. You should already basically know your route anyway so the phone is just a quick confirmation you're on the right road.

A truck/RV GPS will have these low clearance bridges programmed into it so as to route AROUND the low clearance areas.
I use a Garmin dezl GPS. You input the height of your vehicle (and anyone with a CDL SHOULD - key word - know that the height of a standard 53' box trailer is 13 ft 6 in.) and the Garmin routes you around the low clearance areas.

With the demise of passenger rail, the tracks were no longer needed, so they removed it. Unfortunately this bridge and others like it are on the main lines, and are very expensive to regrade/rebuild. The road can’t be lowered because of all the utilities buried under the road. So it’s entertainment for most, headaches for the locals. Checkout the “Can opener bridge” videos here in RUclips.

The 11'8 bridge in Durham, NC, provides the evidence that this approach also does not work. Laser height detectors to turn the light red and activate flashing signs warning that the driver will not fit, multiple clearance signs, the yellow bar, etc, etc, INCLUDING raising the bridge have failed to prevent people destroying their vehicles and weeding themselves in.

Do what the 11' 8 bridge did.
I- beam as a shear bar in front of the bridge. It peals the top of the truck off so the truck can fit.
They also added an overheight warning system, traffic light tuns red and signs warn you that you are overheight , which caused the trucks to drive faster to beat the red light. Which produces great videos .before the early warning system the trucks would slow down and check to see if they could fit. Now they floor it.
They even tried raising the bridge. Triuckers outsmarted the city and ran out and bought taller trucks.

Up until a few years back, this bridge was 11' 8". The RR raised the bridge. For them to raise it more would take a huge effort, raising the grade starting at least a half mile back from the bridge, changing the abutments/supports...the street would get closed down for a couple months while all that took place. In reality it would be the street that would have to be changed since the RR would state that the tracks were there first, and the Feds would back the RR.

Good luck. This setup is similar to the 11-foot-8+8 Bridge.
That bridge has been raised (it uses to just be called the 11-foot-8 Bridge), and it's had a traffic signal installed that's hooked up to s sensor that senses overheight vehicles. The sensor turns the signal red for a full minute, and causes a sign attached to the signal to turn on and say "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN". And it has a steel crash beam positioned in front of the bridge.
We still get to see uploads of crashes on the bridge's RUclips channel.

This useless cop having an opinion..smh.
First, the signage sucks. It could, and should be much clearer.
Second : the bumperbar hangs 2yards in front of the bridge. So no time to react to that.
Third : it's a busy and difficult intersection with lots going on that already requires your attention.
Fourth : they should just dig out the road a bit, so any truck not surpassing the normal height-limit can pass.
I mean this is for uears and years now. If on a daily base people keep jamming their truck under that bridge it's hard to blame the people, obviously the infrastructure is messed up. 😊

What I've learned happens, bridges are under estimated in height and vehicles are overestimated in height. The trucker generally knows this and accepts that they have up to a foot more room than it says. how they use this information is the problem. Many assume they can still make it if they're only slightly over on the numbers. This is how they get caught out. It's not that they were unaware of the potential. They were not entirely oblivious. They didn't use proper caution.
