Alterac Valley in its original form was super fun. The removal of more or less the entire NPC armies and making gathering the support troops (Icelord, Wolfriders, Elite infantry and Windriders) not only unimportant but actually detrimental completely destroyed this battleground.

@@vtheman1850 there was no such thing as coordination around slots in AV and it was never efficient to have long lasting battles. Towers, bosses, etc all gave zero bonus honor. Warsong was the place to be if you were ranking.

@@Nyierm IIRC they removed it when DH's became a thing in legion, as they could just jump the walls and cap bases without needing to break down the walls
I've agreed so far until you said original Ashran was not fun. Ashran was fucking amazing, it effectively recreated the world pvp of the Timeless Isle, but also gave each class a special ability. As a paladin, I literally got to send players to jail if no one helped them out of my spell. Me and the boys used to go around killing elites, gaining buffs, fighting adventuring horde, and once we were powered up, we would rain down on the main battle and claim victory for the Alliance.
AB is my favorite BG. Very rarely is GY camping a thing here and one person can make a huge difference if they know what they are doing. I often go to a lightly defended base to force people from the rest of their team to come down and defend, making it so my team has a player advantage on the base they are currently at. Or I just sit at GM all game, alone, defending it by myself, hiding in a bush, waiting for literally anyone to try and take it.
I remember when i had actual pvp-ing in AV. I as an alliance player oined into an ongoing match, where the Alliance were entirely decimated during the 'running' phase, and everyone was spawned to our boss. The resources were around 470 vs 200 for the horde. There was nothing we could do but to defend the base on the Bridge. We managed to the point where the Horde was withdrawing, back and we were pushing. The game actually finished with 0 resources for the horde, and 30-ish for us. Shoutout to the rogues who sabotaged their towers
Arathi Basin has always been be top favorite, no competition. The reason is it's layout, it's design is incredibly good as every base can be well observed and usually maintained with a bit of teamwork. For example i love the fact you can see and glide down from Lumber mill to any of the 3 visible bases, even stables, it's very convenient. Another great part about is fighting itself, it's layout - buildings, bridges, rivers, etc....allow for a lot of LoSing and escaping tight situations. There is also the thematic factor....the atmosphere is very calm and beautiful, typical Arathi Highlands :) Eye of the Storm is close second....but not quite like Arathi.
Seething Shore will always be kinda fun to me because I could, as a semi-geared demon hunter, reliably take on groups of 3-4 players and either win or survive long enough for help to arrive. Good memories
Loved Alterac Valley back in the day. Some battles literally lasted for days. I remember logging off and joining the next day in the same battle which still wasn't finished at the end of the day. Nowadays it is just a rush to the enemy base and you don't even get attacked by enemy players on the way because they also rush towards your base.
I miss old AV. Back then you would join a fight for HOURS. You would log off then the next day log in and the same fight is still going! lol. HK farming gold!
this! AV was top tier prenerf, the only biggest flaw was that the rewards did not warrant the time sync, but the time was fun and interesting. The main reason the nerf happened was because WSG was absolute F- tier wothout a timer, battles could go nowhere for an hour plus which was just not fun, but then they shortened AV at the same time which made 90% of what the battleground had to offer completely useless
I think this really shows how there is a need to redesign some of the BG's to make them fun again! I would love for AV (etc.) to be made a lot harder to win, so that the side objectives would be in a lot bigger role etc. Another great video, you've been on fire lately Nixxiom! :p

To my surprise, I agreed with all your ratings of the battlegrounds. Even with the few I was initially contrary on, your reasoning brought up good points. Also, good mention of the verticality in Silvershard Mines, I’m gonna have to remember that on my ranged characters!
One of my favorite memories of Alterac Valley was back in BC it was my first time playing it and I was low level so I couldn't help much on the fighting so I just ran around gathering resources for the armour upgrades for the guards and to try and summon the tree thing for the alliance. That was such a long game I loved it!
Old Ashran is the best PvP experience, I spent countless hours there, and it's honestly the main reason I am still subscribed is for that rare week where it is the brawl. It feels like an open world playground, where the fight can shift if you stay long enough. Some of my fondest memories of this game are from this map, it felt like the early days of Alterac, where the entire map was utilized and matches lasted for days. The events themselves were like mini battlegrounds in themselves. Playing with the same people for longer can even cause you to actually recognize and familiarize yourself with the other players. It's the closest thing we have to that classic feel of knowing people from your server we are ever going to get in retail.
Eye of the Storm during Gravity Lapse is hilarious. Try using a blind or polymorph while someone is in the air, and watch them slowly fall to their deaths.
Hello fellow Tar-Heel. Fun video. Eye of the Storm is awesome fun playing rated. You cap the flags rather than a timer. Enjoyed the video and hopefully Blizz will make a new BG soon.
I think I might be weird in that I enjoy every battleground. If we're winning then great, if we're losing then I just go around looking for 1v1 or small skirmishes and that's fun too. Just gotta know when to walk away from the objective because it's so clearly over and just have fun doing the killing part of the game instead.
The old deepwind gorge was a blast, the new one sucks and I’m always frustrated to enter it, I also wish they brought back the feature to disable bgs of your choice from the random bg queues
I would say this feeling has to do with several things: the slower pace of the game, the lack of resources available to you (healing spells, CD of strong skills, etc) making you have to make use of stuff like first aid or cooking, and professions in general having a purpose, the game feeling almost like a survival kind of game where you can put down campfires to cook for example. The game have become too action packed too fastpaced streamlined (powerlevel every zone, farm BiS, go go go). The world feeling like a world you live in with dangerous feeling zones like stranglethorn for example, difficulty of travel, interesting quests that take you to long distance places and back, making it feel like you are traveling and not instant teleporting everywhere. The world feels like a living world you live in, theres conflict beetween diferent factions (besides Alliance and Horde), you can find hidden quests, ruined temples, sunken ships, pirate coves, sunken trasures, rare spawns etc. harder drop rate of rare blue items, items being unique and not just a item level increase, for example Pendulum of Doom 4.0 attack speed and rarity, vs any generic item today where atack speed or effect doesnt even matter you just see a number go up, you traveling to a new zone like it is gonna be your new home for a while and not just a zone you will powerlevel in a couple hours and leave, classes beign really diferent between themselves and having access to unique stuff and quests, that take you to hidden places available only to them, probably there are more stuff that matters but i think this is some of the stuff that is missing and makes some new games (expansions) feel like a hollow diorama just there to look nice while you pass by.
i did really like bgs in wow.. problem is that blizz hasnt added one since BFA pre-patch. it is not fun running the same bgs for x#years P.S. the MoP BGs are the best! the ball one and the carts. actually those are probably my top two
For Aduin: I long for Classic WoW PvP Combat! - I hail from an old PvP server, Warsong, and this was life, in and out of the arenas/battlegrounds. I miss it.
In Warsong Gulch, one time I walked into the enemy base got the flag, then returned to my base capped and won the game. All without ever being attacked, why. Fighting on the road. On my Warrior.
Vanilla AV was a MOBA before MOBAs were popular. Everyone talks about how DOTA 2 slipped through Blizzard's fingers. Nobody seems to notice that SMITE basically did, too. The entire game is just Vanilla AV as its own thing. Still, I think there was and still is a lot of potential for a MOBA mode within an MMO. In fact I'm shocked it hasn't been done yet. Also, Warsong Gulch was and still is perfection.
i literally hate that they made Ashran into an BG and its just an zergfest now. I had a blast in WoD in ashran, played it everyday for hours and with twinks to get fast gear with that bags laying around. Still know the route for those bags lmao.
Nice video. Since you're on the PVP subject i would suggest doing one on open world non instanced PVP zones like the one in Grizzly Hills. Base the fun/not fun scale on quests available and actual PVP that was/is going on in those zones. Now i have no idea if the Grizzly Hills PVP area in the south is actually the only one of its type, but if it's not then i think it would make a nice video. Just my thoughts on the matter. Cheers
Can you do this but for Rated Battlegrounds?.... it is completely different when you have an organized team. For example Temple is so much better with organization and id say its fun in that context.
Random Battlegrounds have been the highlight of the entire game for me. It's annoying that 90% of the time people won't play objectively, but when you get a good game it's absolutely epic. My only wish is that they gave us some more maps and more game modes, they've hardly added anything new in that regard which is highly disappointing.
As a PvP montage maker, Arathi Basin is by far the best BG. It's home of the 1vX, if you see any of my videos, like 80% of all my clips are in AB lol. Gilneas is also kinda fun too, I've gotten a lot of clips from there, matter of fact my DR pre patch montage actually has one of my best clips to date in Battle for Gilneas where I do a 1v4 that I BARELY won. Plus that little ledge up there between mines and lighthouse is really good for getting into small fights. As far as Alterac Valley goes, I'll never not be excited to get it. Every single time I always try to create a turtle game by going and back capping towers and GYs and picking off stragglers in the back of the raid every time across the field of strife. Lots of fun and I always enjoy it. What I don't like about AV is the people that don't wanna play it. They just stick to one side of the map and rush to towers and boss to try and win and I hate that so much. It's a lot more fun to have this all out war with the other team and see who can push who back and see who can get the most killing blows you know, I love that shit man. As far as seething shore goes... Man fuckin delete that shit 😂 nobody likes that BG
Gilneas is fun in an RBG setting because there’s actual communication. Sit a tank at LH/Mines, send rogue to do rogue shit, and fuck em up at team fight
Total disagree on av being not fun, it is the most varied bg there is, you can do whatever u want and make meaningful impact. No other bg gives me the opportunity as a rogue to stealth cap a tower which delays the enemies kill window giving us a near guarantied win if they dont do the same. Then doing it AGAIN on another tower or two.
most fun I personally had in WoW was rated BG back in cata, so I love warsong and twin peaks, gilneas and arathi are fine, EoS is okay compared to most BGs that got released afterwards.
I don't mind Kotmogu unless my team is mentally handicapped and dose not understand that orbs do nothing unless you are in mid. I see people taking them FAR out of the mid like near the starting area and giving 0 points to the team then wondering why we lost.
back in the day- pre cata- AV was my favourite battleground, the BG could last for LITERAL hours, and it was just so much fun (despite omfgggg the lag) since then though, on the VERY RARE occasion i've managed to actually get into one, it's not as fun anymore- its not even speed running the bosses anymore, no one gathers the resources or graveyards, they just exclusively fight in the middle, non-stop. It's also why I get annoyed trying to play WSG- everyone just fights in the mid then cries about losing! If you're someone who just fights in the mid in WSG, STOP FIGHTING IN THE MID, THE OBJECTIVE IS TO CAP THE FLAG, MAYBE YOU'LL ACTUALLY WIN A GAME. Sorry i ranted a bit there...
Was heavy into BGs in the days of legion. Decided to start doing some with my horde shaman a few weeks ago... Man it feels bad, people run around like headless chickens. Win ration around 15%...
All that druid hate D: Mostly agree with the fun/not funs but I like temple of Kotmogu because it's the only one where you get powered up and can be chaotic. Of course it's not always true but ranged classes have the advantage. Alterac Valley can be fun when you get the world boss helping you. Also sneaking into the enemy base to steal the towers. My favorite is probably Arathi Basin with the different landscapes and constant events in the battleground
Only 2 I disagree with are av and kotmogu. I do remember in years past, the meta simply being bum rush the enemy boss, but recently, (past year or so), both teams have been meeting in the middle and capping and defending towers in all my games. And if I team is struggling to get past a choke point it isn't uncommon for ice daddy, treesus or wolf/ram riders to come out which is awesome to see regardless of what side you are on. The reason I love kotmogu is with the right strategy and co-ordination, a losing team can make a comeback from getting slaughtered in mid by one shotting the orb holders with ranged attacks, repicking the orbs and having the rest of the team help the orb carriers kite around the outside without jumping down into mid. Not to mention if you are on the team who is dominating mid and you have control of the orb, one shotting anyone who jumps into the pit is glorious.
for some of the older ones they need simply revert them to being open world pvp areas but with modern rewards as bgs same with AV would help revitalise them hugely , thats assuming players still have taste for similar pvp tastes as 10 years ago.i love wintergrasp but the changes where simply not needed same with AV.
Alterac Valley is still my favorite of them all. It could also have been made better. The battleground shows siege vehicles just sitting off to the side, why not be able to hop into them?
Playing on Cata as a kid with no skill I disliked Alterac the most because it was the most linear map where I couldn’t stand at the side unnoticed casting spells into the fight
Alterac Valley is a perfect example of where the thing that makes it not fun is entirely the fault of the players. All the elements to make it fun are there; the players just refuse to use them for some reason. The only thing I think can be improved by the devs is to put more incentives to use what is already there so people don't treat it as "just do what is the most efficient thing to get honor to get it over with."
Current AV is bad because it has nothing to do with the objectives, the only thing people do is camp a single enemy GY until the game ends. That reinforcements counter at the top killed the BG. Every time I do the BG these days, one side just farms the other side, intentionally not capping the GY so they can just spawn camp 40 players non stop.
As of right now (Dragonflight) Ashran is not fun because Alliance can use the backdoor strat and if horde dont defend it its over in like 5 minutes. AV i love when it turtles but thats almost never now
Unpopular opinion, but Tol Barad was the best open world PvP battleground they ever made and unfortunately we can't even queue into it on the epic BG list.
Battlegrounds all have the same feeling for me though. 😏 _" Omg I am Alliance, hopefully I have people who outgear the enemy players at least 1/3th all over the board or I will have only weak air behind my back. "_ Stopped playing battlegrounds first half when TBC was first released. And I know it never got "better" again with the Alliance. 😆 Cause I know a guy who BG'd for yeeeeeeeears. 👏👏👏 But kudos for Nixxiom to calls out the neat details of WoW ever so often. 👍👍👍
Warsong gulch was fun if it was evenly matched. In the cluster I was in, it was very Horde dominated, and Horde was much better at Pvp. Very rarely would ally win this, so not so much fun.
AV was awesome back in the day when people would actually pvp in it. It really felt like an epic battle and it was much fun. Now both sides just zerg the enemy general and avoid doing any pvp at all, which is boring and lame.

When did they take strand of the ancients out? I just recently came back and I remember having fun on that one.
it sucks they removed the strand of the ancients, i kinda liked that epic BG
In Warsong Gulch, one time I walked into the enemy base got the flag, then returned to my base capped and won the game. All without ever being attacked, why. Fighting on the road. On my Warrior.
Seething Shore is my favourite BG because I'm a rogue and love to ninja the nodes.
So the big takeaway from this I’m seeing is “fuck Druids.”
I used to play a worgen druid and running the flag was amazing. Cat sprint, cheetah, cheetah with worgen sprint. GG
He likes IOC...i cant take any of his opinions serious anymore.
i literally hate that they made Ashran into an BG and its just an zergfest now. I had a blast in WoD in ashran, played it everyday for hours and with twinks to get fast gear with that bags laying around. Still know the route for those bags lmao.
I remember sitting in the river in Battle for Gilneas and healing from the bottom as a holy priest. Was good fun until someone finally spots me.
I loved Arathi Basin back in the day, as well as AV
Playing the Terrans back on StarCraft prepared me well for Alterac Valley.
Cheers
Jokes on you Nixxion, Clan Battlehammer turtles every AV we do as a guild, and we always summon Ivus to attack the enemy base!
Can you do this but for Rated Battlegrounds?.... it is completely different when you have an organized team. For example Temple is so much better with organization and id say its fun in that context.
Seething shore, if that's how they play in the NA servers then I feel for you because these matches are insane in the EU side.
2:41 Hungarian Guild nice too see this. :) Woo Woo for Hungarian wow players.
Playing rogue, AB is the best BG to ever exist. As for EOTS, it'd be 10x better if they just put in proper nodes like in the rated version.
What changed in wintergrasp for it not being fun anymore?
Why did they remove mine carts from Deepwind Gorge?
Eye is bad as a normal bg, but great as a RBG because the Mao has cap flags
Was heavy into BGs in the days of legion. Decided to start doing some with my horde shaman a few weeks ago... Man it feels bad, people run around like headless chickens. Win ration around 15%...
All that druid hate D:
Mostly agree with the fun/not funs but I like temple of Kotmogu because it's the only one where you get powered up and can be chaotic. Of course it's not always true but ranged classes have the advantage. Alterac Valley can be fun when you get the world boss helping you. Also sneaking into the enemy base to steal the towers. My favorite is probably Arathi Basin with the different landscapes and constant events in the battleground
I reallt love side objectives and a bit of PvE mixed in
Only 2 I disagree with are av and kotmogu.
Calling the best BG in the game not fun. Wild take my man. But it's okay to be wrong. Love you!
for some of the older ones they need simply revert them to being open world pvp areas but with modern rewards as bgs same with AV would help revitalise them hugely , thats assuming players still have taste for similar pvp tastes as 10 years ago.i love wintergrasp but the changes where simply not needed same with AV.
Alterac Valley is still my favorite of them all. It could also have been made better. The battleground shows siege vehicles just sitting off to the side, why not be able to hop into them?
My favorite battleground was Strand of the Ancients and I am an extremely sad man because of itg.
Hated Warsong Gulch... but really liked eye of the storm. Also Aterac valley is my fave pvp bg
Vanilla AV is the best BG WOW has ever had. Hope it they bring it back at least for a while like they did at the end of shadowlands.
they bring it back during every anniversary now.
I hate pvp but I love Arathi and warsong gulch. Made the low level pvp so much better
Playing on Cata as a kid with no skill I disliked Alterac the most because it was the most linear map where I couldn’t stand at the side unnoticed casting spells into the fight
I miss old IOC when you could one shot the glaives on a rogue.
I actually liked strand of the ancients and still like alterac I just love those kind of unique bgs. I'll admit isle of conquest is more balanced tho
Did they take out strand of the ancients? That was pretty fun. 😊
5:45 anyone know what nameplates he’s using?
Ashran? You mean Backdoor?
mu fav battleground are as following: deepwind gorge, arathi basin and alterac valley
Just imagine WSG on a certain server where everyone can get that druid form
Current AV is bad because it has nothing to do with the objectives, the only thing people do is camp a single enemy GY until the game ends. That reinforcements counter at the top killed the BG. Every time I do the BG these days, one side just farms the other side, intentionally not capping the GY so they can just spawn camp 40 players non stop.
As of right now (Dragonflight) Ashran is not fun because Alliance can use the backdoor strat and if horde dont defend it its over in like 5 minutes. AV i love when it turtles but thats almost never now
"Warsong Gulch" is the GOAT Battlegrounds.
I Love the rated version of eye of the storm
2:41 Magyarock guild, i am a 100% sure that is a hungarian gild :D
I haven't won a single Isle of Conquest this entire expansion as Horde.
Unpopular opinion, but Tol Barad was the best open world PvP battleground they ever made and unfortunately we can't even queue into it on the epic BG list.
Battlegrounds all have the same feeling for me though. 😏
_" Omg I am Alliance, hopefully I have people who outgear the enemy players at least 1/3th all over the board or I will have only weak air behind my back. "_
Stopped playing battlegrounds first half when TBC was first released.
Eye storm is fun reason why play a shaman be a good Wolfie and use thunderstorm best bg ever
