    I’m a doctor and am always asked why I still drive my old Kia. They’re surprised when they see I don’t own a huge fancy house or have tons of jewelry or closets full of clothes. It’s because I live within my means. That doesn’t just mean what I need today. It means I look at what I’ll need in the future and save accordingly. I don’t want to be working when I’m 70 or even 60. So living within my means includes my entire lifespan. I would also rather spend my money now on hobbies, trips, good food and investing. Not clothes, shoes, purses, make up, mani/pedis, cars, extra rooms full of useless decor and furniture, or landscaping. I could care less what my colleagues think. Let them waste their money and work forever because they have to. I’ll get to enjoy my life now since I can work less and retire at 60. Maybe earlier if my investments are good.

    • @amq440
      @amq440 8 месяцев назад

      Good for you! I love the idea you expressed that "living within my means includes my entire lifespan." So true; we generally only think that living within our means includes the here and now. My husband's father just passed away last year at the age of 92. If you retire at 62 and like my father in law, live into your 90s, you have to be prepared to be economically viable 30 years from then. Few people can do that without having saved up a large nest egg ....

    People are still being given very outdated financial advice. Going to school today, often means a lifetime of debt. People often work longer hours, producing more for the company they work for, but their wages remain stagnant by comparison to how much they produce and especially the increase of inflation.
    Not to mention, a job can be lost due to deep recessions like the one in 2007/2008, where several million people were laid off, losing their income. Which brings me to another important problem.
    People must understand the difference between income vs what wealth is and having wealth. The solution is not more jobs, the solution is education in financial literacy i.e. entrepreneurship and the goal of accumulating wealth.

      They have no clue, right before this happened I had spent the prior twenty years working my way up. First military and working through school, then time in doing the field jobs, and had just gotten to that first level of management were I was able to make money and look to buy freehold property. Then was laid off not long after the change in administration during the middle of the unemployment "crisis", this since the project I was working on for the company was tied to a federal contract. I was on UI until it ran out, ended up in landlord tenant court... and haven't recovered since.
      What people are also not understanding is how the results of this have been used in a biased and prejudicial manner. It was not long before resumes and application were automatically dismissed if the person had been on UI for more than six months, or ended up having credit issues from long term unemployment and underemployment.
      In a main comment, I may get into the fact that a lot of people never needed to be unemployed if the government would have just enforced the rule of law on companies; that gets into their retention policies, and abuse of the visa programs. These were not just a few jobs here and there either, the jobs numbered in the hundreds of thousands that could have remained employed, or picked up for new employment. The thing is a lot of it is still going on, and not even the alt media on places like YT cover it with any significance, I even outright ask people to contact me to discuss it, and maybe start organizing.
      It should not ba a surprise to anyone if in the near future there are movements of violent dissent, I am surprised it has not already been seen, but I just figure the individuals who are going down that path are being very careful planners.

      @jessicah3450 3 года назад

      I worked for Macy's shortly after they took over May Company. I got paid $8.50/hour, no commission. The grandfathered in Foley's employees made $13/hour plus 5% commission. All of this was in 2007-08. I still can't imagine making $13/hr plus commission as a sales associate here nearly 15 years later. Wages haven't stagnated, they've gone down. In the beginning, we had to have just as much product knowledge, and meet a sales quota, even without commission. Macy's tried really hard to get rid of the Foley's employees though, if anything came up, if a worker needed to take any leave from the company, they'd pay them $8.50 when they came back. Even people who had been with the company for 30+ years (down here it was Sanger Harris back then before Foley's) got their pay cut eventually. I'm 34 though, my 20's were lost because of the Great Recession, I couldn't afford to continue college. These corporate takeovers allow companies who treat their workers worse to buy companies who treated their workers better. It is a race to the bottom.
      I also worked as a teller for Bank One during their takeover by JP Morgan Chase, same story. Bank One paid tellers $11-13/hour, Chase paid $9/hour. I got the job at just the right time to make $9/hour. That was 2004. This was when banks were making tons of money from those balloon mortgages and 30% interest on credit card debt. I felt so dirty pushing their bank products on people that I, even at my entry level job, knew was absolutely wrong. If people just read the fine print before signing those papers. I learned the lesson to always know exactly what I'm signing from that job. They also could have paid their workers better, and the American people ended up bailing these criminal banks out. My sister was a teller at Comerica in the 1990's and made $16/hour by the way. That money went a lot further in 1992. Corporations are lying when they say they can't pay workers $15/hour, because they have before. Again, it's a race to the bottom.

    To avoid being poor and/or homeless, just stick to these rules: DO NOT GET MORTGAGE, DO NOT BUY NEW CARS ON LEASE. Then you have no installments, no extra monthly payments. If you cant afford it, do not buy it. Save as much as you can. Do not eat out, at least for some time. Do not go to the cinema, do not buy unnecessary things. Then you will be able to save a certain amount of money and have a backup sum for bad times. Cause you never know... But people want to have large houses, new cars, designer clothes and shoes, expensive toys for kids... So they go to their bank - and the damage is done. They think they are fine living on loans. No, no one is. It is just a dream. If you live in a house that you bought on a mortgage, then it is not yours. If you leased a car, it is not yours. If you bought your kids a new game console on a loan, it is not theirs. You live in someone elses property, use someone elses car, in fact. Wake up. Dont do that. Why do you want to ruin your life??? Save up and then spend. But never spend more than you can afford. That is it.

      DanaPatriciaMary1 (I'm 20, go to school full time and I am a server in a very low cost of living area where most of the people I know make around 300-500 a week) I grew up in a household where whenever we had a dollar we would spend two, and we always found ourselves getting cars repossessed having our lights and water shut off and being evicted. My parents didn't TRY to work more in order to supplement themselves and their three kids they chose to bring into the world, but rather continued living in poverty, not because we didn't make enough but because we bought stupid shit. We would go out to eat every day, always had the newest gadgets, always went shopping even though we had to take a bus or taxi to get there. It was beyond dumb, but thankfully I have learned from their mistakes. My parents are still poor, and will most likely be poor for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately I have to help them here and there, but I have no children, no bills, no anything. I am saving up 2k a month and have no student loans and I am the happiest I've ever been.

I took on more responsibility, got more training, every thing they kept saying I needed at each review, then still no raise. Peoples lives around the world depend on what I do every day and I still don't make $30,000 a year. It's the carrot on a stick. 11 of the younger workers have left in less than two months this year and the company had the audacity to send out a questionnaire to see why employees are leaving as if it is something new.

    When AI and robotics really kick in during the next decade there's going to be a whole stratum of middle-class who will not only become unemployed, but unemployable, because every job within their educational, training and skill-set will be equally affected. They'll have to learn the sort of blue-collar skills that robots will not necessarily be able to do, like fixing a central heating boiler...

      If you make $2200/month and have kids, you are entitled to some EIC and a Child Tax Credit of $1000/child. While you will owe little or no income tax, you will owe a lot of FICA tax.
      Here's how I propose to deal with people like you. All following amounts are monthly. Income including employer's share of Social Security = 1.0765x2200 = 2368. Gross Income tax = 2368/3 = 789. Social Security = 15.3% of 2200 = 337. Net income tax = 789-337 = 452. You would get $500/month from the US Treasury, called a "demogrant." Your net tax liability would be 789-500 = 289. Each dependents you have who are under the age of 18 would earn you an additional demogrant.
      Food stamps are trivial for those who don't have kids.
      In many parts of the USA, it takes years on a waiting list to qualify for section 8 money.
      Medicaid is fairly nice, although a fair number of doctors do not work for Medicaid payments alone.
      Qualifying for disability often requires hiring a specialised lawyer who knows how to shop around for a jurisdiction which is a soft touch.

    The situation hasn't even begun to bite. AI and robotics are going to consign whole swathes of employment to the ashes of history. And these are not going to be just the repetitive low-wage opportunities; cohorts of middle-classes are going to find themselves not only unemployed, but unemployable, as the entire stratum of jobs and skills they represent are subsumed by smart machines. Those in employment today at low-to-middle skilled levels would be wise to start saving just as hard as they possibly can, and/or perhaps develop a skill that cannot easily be adopted by AI, because it's a likelihood, if not a ball-busting certainty that they will face long-term redundancy within a matter of a few years...

    I was lucky, I grew up in the country with the highest standard of living in the world. It was a country where a single parent, working a minimum wage job (Full time) could live above the poverty line. My mom didn't work because she didn't have to work. Even though she had a college degree and was a teacher, though she did go back to work when I was 13. My dad made enough money to support us, buy a new car every 3 years, buy clothes and all that other stuff and pay down a 15-year mortgage in 11 years. When my dad retired he had three different pensions he collected. Plus Social Security. I was fortunate because I grew up in the United States in the 1960's. Now people work 2 or 3 jobs because they cannot get full time.

      I'm not "mean". I just asked a reasonable question. In order to solve a problem, you need to understand it. Those women are in that situation because they are single moms. So maybe what we actually need is some honesty as a society.

    • @Garium87
      @Garium87 6 лет назад +11

      You are insulting me over and over again, for speaking out an important and simple fact, but I am the mean one?
      Because the truth is "mean"? The truth isn't "mean". Hard, maybe but not "mean". You know what's actually "mean". To lie to young women and to tell them that single motherhood is great. That those women are just as happy as married women are. That their children don't need a father and that to be raised by a single mom will not be an enormous disadvantage in every possible aspect. What I say might be hard to hear for women who have made the false decisions, but your dishonesty is leading young women into the same, destructive direction.

    • @Garium87
      @Garium87 6 лет назад +3

      lisa, you need to grow up and to realize that insults are a bad substitute for arguments. I never said we shouldn't help them - I probably give more to charity than you do - but that doesn't mean we should act as if every bad situation just happened. No, it usually came about threw bad decisions. Single motherhood drives poverty like nothing else does. And the children of single mothers have *several times* higher risk to end up in prison, to become drug-addicted, to break up high school, and to get pregnant while being underage. It destroys the lives of everyone involved and harms our society like almost nothing else. And *YOU* and people like you, are responsible for their suffering by spreading bullshit like your claim that single motherhood would be a good thing. You are causing damage and you blame me for pointing at the problem you have caused!

    • @shaina_2211
      @shaina_2211 6 лет назад

      Very few women plan to be a single mom. I'm sure there are some people out there talking about how great it is, but that isn't the case for the large amount of lower income women I've met. Also, nobody said that in this video. Your comment is literally off topic. You could say poor women should stop having sex, but everyone knows how unrealistic that is. A quick glance at maslow's hierarchy of human needs, aside from common sense, demonstrates that. You could also say that poor women should use birth control, but that is also out of touch with reality. It isn't easily accessible for all women, unless you have transportation to a place that gives free condoms. Maybe it's just me, but I've always had problems with condoms sliding out of place or busting when put on properly. It's also super easy to forget to use a condom if that's not normally your routine. Then there's the problem of birth control not always preventing pregnancy. 85% accuracy with normal use sounds good until you realize that it means 15 women out of 100 will become pregnant every year. That's actually a ton of women.

    Nothing new here; age discrimination has also become the norm for decades now. Employer corporations and businesses do not want to pay experienced, older employees the wages they deserve or the higher insurance premiums that insurance companies charge employers of older workers. State and Federal governments, even though there are anti-discrimination laws on both books, do little or nothing to curb the laying off of senior employees and older managers in workplaces in favor of youth. Many older workers become and remain unemployed thanks to rampant age discrimination in hiring practices that are on-going to this day. Hypocrisy abounds and creates poverty because nothing is done to stop these human-rights violations. Older workers are forced into taking early Social Security and losing at least 25% of their Social Security income for the rest of their lives. This is one of the several reasons why I want our governments to take care of our own citizens first. Both pre-baby boomers and baby boomers need justice done to recoup their lost careers and livelihoods. For shame, America. Randy Perkins that’s the thing. In your country normal life events ARE beyond what you can afford. Where I’m at, I actually make a living wage, businesses thrive, and everything is affordable. In US, you have to take risks like deciding if feeding your children expired food will do more good than harm because you can’t afford anything else.

    The median tax return has an AGI of about $45K/year. These data exclude the 10% of the population that do not need to file, and do not qualify for the earned income credit. These data also exclude the untaxed portion of Social Security and private pensions, which biases things the other way. At any rate, maybe as many as 60% of all American households are making under $45K/year.

      "1." is mostly under peoples control, but not always, even so there are plenty of resources for a GED, and many times at a community college where they will be more than happy to assist in advancing a person to a technical certificate or associates degree.
      "2." is also under most peoples control, but let's face it, people are going to reproduce. There is nothing wrong with it if done responsibly, and it is the biological imperative. Trouble is this also happens to people who are married, and maybe have, or plan on having, only a child or two. If two people cannot live in such a manner, there is something wrong with that society, not those two people.
      "3." is the main issue, but the one people have the least control over compared to the others now. It's like that stupid butterfly effect thing, Soros sells some currency, a national or regional economy crashes; some government official decides not to make sure the laws are enforced, well, unemployment line; earthquake here, tsunami there, stock prices change, oh well, layoffs, not hiring, or renewal of contract for business... it has become too unstable, as will societies if it is aloud to continue.
      What people fail to understand with what happened over the past, going on, ten years now, that instead of having a general recession, many were put into an out right depression. I keep having to try and communicate some topics because they get almost no to little press, including alt media.
      Some made up bias policies in hiring practices have kept many of the same people unemployed or underemployed since this started. The idea that if during this time-frame someone was unemployed for more than six months, and maybe has had credit issues related to the situation, so is then not considered for employment, is just made up nonsense. These practices have caused harm to a lot of people, and actually harms the economy, since the individuals will not be able to participate in it to their full potential, and even ultimately end up drawing resources from it.

    Since when is $45000 for a family of four, poor?

    • @JohnNNJ
      @JohnNNJ 6 лет назад +1

      Well, it's $45,000 per year, after taxes is is closer to $35,000 per year, not counting what you may chip in for health insurance, and maybe retirement (401K, IRA...).
      Whether it be renting at least a three bedroom apartment, or buying a three bedroom home on a thirty year first time buyers mortgage, the combined rent and utilities or mortgage, property tax, insurance and utilities is going to be $1800 to $2000 per month easily. This is assuming something like two boys and two girls each doubling up in a bedroom, and not the best school district or neighborhood.
      Then there is transportation to and from work, even assuming a one car family in a beater and the other uses public transit, it will probably still be at least $300 per month for insurance, fuel, fare, tolls... not including things maintenance.
      Then there is food, I do not know what exactly it would cost to feed six people per month but I will assume a lot, since you can still make $5000 per month yet qualify for SNAP benefits at the upward limit with that many people in the household. Even with this program, it is just a supplement, and the more you make the less the subsidy is, meaning there are still out of pocket expenses. So, even with this you can bet at least another couple hundred per month for food.
      Then there is clothing, costs associated with education, most health insurance is co-pat based and kids go to the doctor...
      You can see where this goes fast, like they said in the video, the cost of living is high, but also those areas are where the jobs are. I can easily see why last the time I checked six years ago the upward income level to qualify for low income housing was about $45,000 per year for a single.
      I am going to even extend this to the whole BOWASH area, but $45,000us per year is just doing okay for a single, and just barley making it work for a couple, start adding kids and it becomes problematic quickly. People can say what they want about how other people shouldn't have kids they cannot afford, but the fact is that is just not going to happen. The issues in this world, or even this area of the world, are certainly not a hypothetical couple who may just want to have a kid or two, those are much larger social and cultural issues that exist outside those two people.

    • @danielalt7508
      @danielalt7508 6 лет назад

      JohnNNJ ah. I was thinking it inkluded education, healt insurance and all other things. Those are free in sweden but average income is 25000$ a year

    • @JohnNNJ
      @JohnNNJ 6 лет назад

      Daniel Alt, the cost of the education is mostly provided K-12, but there are still other expenses associated with it. Most other things like health and retirement are self provided, or provided by the company you are working for, and usually with at least partial payment.
      People have been trying to get the health care thing going here even since the seventies. There is a Nixon White House tape where the issue is being discussed, and how he doesn't like the socialized health-care idea; but when the HMO's are explained to him, that the people to pay into it, but then coverage is denied from the bullies position, he expresses a like of that.
      The thing is people have the mistaken idea health care can be provided on the national level here, like in Europe and the U.K., but the trouble is the U.S. is too big as a nation. So it really comes down to how it should be state socialized health-care as probably being the more appropriate answer. This since states in the U.S. can be comparable to countries in Europe with regard to functioning at that level.
      This is how it seems to be set up in Canada, where when you live in a province, you may have a provincial health card. If you are then injured in another province, you get emergency and basic care, but for treatment and some other things you need to go back to your province of residence. Then, if you move, it changes to the new province similar in the way drivers licenses are handled in Canada and the U.S. Plus, I am sure there are all sorts of reciprocal agreements, especially between bordering provinces.
      So, I think the whole idea of nationalized health care is kind of a misnomer over here, but a plan could be put into effect and work if done right.
