  • A New Beginning | Buddhist Monk Hair Shaving
    To become a Buddhist monk, one must begin the process of letting go. A ceremony that he participates in is the hair shaving ceremony. This hair shaving ceremony is witnessed by his friends, family, and community. Shaving of the hair is symbolic of detaching and letting go and announcing that one is taking the vow to become a monk. People come to join to rejoice in the merit and to show their support. This video gives you an intimate and emotional look into this beautiful ceremony. I hope you enjoy. #buddhistmonk #monks #buddhism

      It takes me back to my own hair shaving ceremony IDOP 10 in July 2012, it was and still is the greatest moment in my life, when friends asked me to explain what it felt like during this time, my answer was, like trying to describe to a blind man the colour blue of the sky above.
      I still have my hair in the lotus leaf in my meditation room with my crystal buddha and Luang Pu.
      Thank you for your great contribution to Buddhism 🙏🙏🙏

      Reminds me how I really want to go through that experience yet buddhism isn’t still a big deal around here and it’s way too expensive to spend a few days in the only place there is. :/ I wish I lived in a different country.

Even though I have studied much of Theravada Buddhism I can say I know nothing till I see a simple gesture like this to understand the corpus of Buddha Dhamma. Metta to you all! May you both be happy, safe and well, may all sentient beings [i am shedding tears joy wishing this] be happy, safe and well. With this alone I am free do die free from fear, and attachment!!!

    Buddha said that Giving hair is like surrender of yourself , your ego infront of Buddha & Dhamma. It means you have left nothing from past only present is there which will go with Buddha & Dhamma..
    It is very nice & holly concept from Buddha's teachings... Nothing can be so pure , true (sacca) & holly other than Dhamma.. Transparent yet real.

    I left my job for a new job in a much healthier, less toxic environment. So I bought electric clippers and tried to cut my hair own...it was not good. So I ended up shaving everything, I was not happy. I found this video in an effort to help make myself feel better. It has helped me to turn what I feel a negative into a positive.... "New beginnings" is exactly what I will say to anyone that ask me WHY did you do that?!

    What a lovely ceremony - so moving … WOW! I think it takes lots of courage to willingly remove ALL of one’s head and facial hair even if/when you’re already losing some of it (naturally thinning, breaking or falling hair). I’m curious though - I see the hair is not allowed to fall to the ground but is collected. What becomes of the shaved hair? My grandma would always say shed hair must never be thrown away as trash or garbage but should be buried or composed so that it can return to the earth. Also, how is it decided who gets the honour of shaving the new monk? Does he get to choose from among the brother monks who he’d like to stand with him? Really lovely video - thanks so much for sharing. 🙏😊

    • @nickkeomahavong01
      @nickkeomahavong01  3 года назад +1

    I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I understand the solemnity of it. It’s like giving up your old self and begin the spiritual Metamorfosis. On the other hand, from a biological perspective, the eyebrows are supposed to protect your eyes from sweat. So, I would like to keep them. Furthermore, the cleanness and the shaving remind me a bit of the military. Although, this is the spiritual army of One.
