Before Amber Alerts and social media, there was Soul Asylum’s video of ‘Runaway Train’ airing on MTV. In the video for the 1994 hit, the band featured powerful vignettes about 36 children who have gone missing. As a result of the video, 25 of the children were found.
I think there was at least 7 different versions of this video, each for a different country for the kids missing there. This song makes me cry every time!

Makes you wonder why this isn't replayed and updated with new missing kids/people every 6 months or even every year. It would reach a whole range of people that places like WalMart do not. I think every major store should do that also though.
The song is really about depression but the band decided to bring awareness to the missing kids. The video has several versions depending on the area it was featured with pictures of local missing cases.
This hurts,.so much. Every time I watch this I cry,..even now. Breaks me inside. Due to this song,26 of the kids made it home. Many havent though. Some were found, but not living.
There are several different versions of this video depending on the country it was aired *and the producers agreed to re-edit the video with new photos anytime a featured case was closed.
Yup! There was also one and possibly more than one that seen themselves on this video and afterwards they reunited with their families. I pray for those whom were never heard from again. I do know a few were solved and had a tragic ending. Makes me wonder why they never recreated this music video/song with kids/people who are missing now.

Poverty, and all that comes with it, knows no color....#ForgottenChildren. Thank you for picking this song...it's still just as powerful decades later. 🙏💕
Soul Asylum was one of the first bands to address Missing and Exploited children. Runaway Train has become and Anthem for those of us that have been in these situations. I myself suffered abuse and rape at the hands of those closest to me and that I trusted most at the the age of 10. I ran away from home and eventually ended up in States Custody. When you are put into the system you are forgotten. You are just another number. When we run away its to get out of a bad situation. Which sometimes puts us in a worse one. Some of the kids here were kidnapped, they ended up dead or in a sex trafficking ring. This song and video brought more awareness to at risk children, in its time. AND STILL DOES!!! As someone who lived through all aspects of this except for death.... this song always hits home and causes pain. BUT. It also heals a little. Because I know that at least now.... due to this song other kids are not forgotten....
As a teenage i ended up living out of a backpack and sleeping under an interstate overpass. I legit had days where i looked at a vending machine with the change i had and was doing the math on how many ounces of substance i could get from the different items with the change i had available. I’m i fire fighter now with 3 kids and a wife. I was lucky many kids in our world never have the opportunity to make it that far. As the song says they get in too deep. Some never even have the choice in trying to make it. We must protect and take care of our youth. Give them a chance no matter what their backgrounds are.
It's about missing people but mostly younger ones. 'Ginger Sue Hudson' in this video was sadly a victim of a very famous serial killer at the time, and a few others were too IIRC.
Never knew my real parents raised foster home found later my real mother se don,t want to have any part me don,t know why but i learned to live with that ..this song hits home

The song wasn't really about runaways or abductions. The singer wrote the song at a time in his life when he was really depressed and down for some reason. The producers decided to put this video with the song because at the time there were so many children missing and they thought it might help get answers or make people come to realization of what was going on and be more observant and alert.

A lot of kids don't have a supportive family. That's what really sucks. They may be living on the streets selling themselves but they probably had it worse back "home". Breaks your heart.
Soul Asylum's Runaway train is about missing and runaway children, and here is a fact about every 40 seconds a child goes missing, that's around 2,300 children a day, and that estimates to 460,000 children a year this is in the United States alone. As a missing children advocate, I can't stress that one way we can help them out in order for them to be found safe and be brought back home is if all come together by continuing to share their faces and name with everyone either on social media such as Facebook or actually in person by putting up posters of them in stores or other places because in the end bringing these children home is what most important.
It’s unfathomable, to think there are people amongst us that would use another person for their selfish gain, and disregard them with no conscience…..The “best” in our world, are some of the people we get to know………The “worst” in our world, are some of the people we get to know….🤷🏼♂️
I just love your love for each other ❤️ I haven’t heard this song in so many years and it amazes me that I remember all the words. So deep and meaningful. 😢😔
I love this song! Always have! Your analysis and this video drove home it's depth. At first listen it's so melodic, you can miss the darkness. Thanks, guys!
One of my all time favorite songs!! Couldn't fully grasp it when I was young playing it.....but decades later while vibing to my 90's this song brings tears to my eyes! So deep.... I think they're talking about abducted children as well....
I am SO HAPPY you were able to turn your life around. Very much shows your strength Jai, you should always see that in yourself and fu¢k anything negative anyone can say to you, especially when the negative statement doesn't apply.
One also has to take into consideration that many 'runaway-kids' started running for a reason, and that there might not be much of a home to return to. Society needs better safety-nets for kids. 💔
In the sixties I was sent to a school for the maladjusted. I had been physically, mentally and emotionally abused by my mother for years. I had a breakdown and started stealing. Most of the kids in that school had similar problems.
I miss the 90s music so much. Another great review as usual. You guys should look into 311, Pearl Jam and Sublime to name a few. You won't be disappointed. Have a great day guy's 💓💓
Such a surprise to see this song/video come up. Loved the song and the video is powerful as hell and really sad. More Soul Asylum please. They were a great band.
This song is amazing, real& sad all at the same time. Great reaction as usual. Ya'll are in my top 5 reactors on RUclips. Peace, love& good vibes baby.✌🤘❤
Had to google it up. Till 2022 there were saved 21 of 36 children or juvenile shown in this video! Still can lose some tears, reading about this great success.
One of my favorite, and saddest songs of all time. Sometimes I feel this way..Thanks for the reaction. Love you guys! I cry every time I see this video..lawd. seems like the worst of the video was edited out. Which is a good thing.
Soul Asylum is such an amazing band!!!! Jai-you look freaking AMAZING!!!! You’re just glowing all over 😊 ETA: the song/video isn’t just about kids who ran away. It was about missing children in general; lots of them were kidnapped. The sad thing is, while the video brought a lot of awareness about missing/runaway kids, the majority of the kids in the video never made it back home. Many were found deceased years later.
@Rachel Warner - I might just delete my earlier reply. Most of the 26 kids originally found, were found alive. Of those who had died, each of them had been murdered - killed is too mild of a word. I don’t know the total number of missing children shown in the video(s). There’s no doubt that too many are still missing, and they could be the majority of those shown.😢 As noted at the very beginning of the video, in America alone, more than *one million children* are lost on the streets. 💔
Such a great song- everybody’s got a story that could break your heart. I imagine most people on the streets wish they could go home but you’re right, maybe their home is no better for abuse, drugs, just chaos. Others are probably ashamed and think they’ll be judged for what they have done to survive. Easy to judge, but we need to have more compassion for each other, this world is hard enough. Love you guys! Cheers from Canada 🙂
I just love you guys. Sometimes the only joy I get in my life is you two. Y’all have helped me get through stuff much deeper than just the pandemic. Jai you are a beautiful soul to me. And Half you are a good man. I see the love between you two and the trials and tribulations you’ve faced this year TOGETHER you are a role model for (not perfect) but a good “partnership” it’s so deep to me. I don’t get to watch as much as I want (grand babies ya know) but when I do I feel blessed. Like I said I love you guys keep sendin them good vibes my way!! I’m paying them forward don’t cha know. 😎
I loved this song as a kid. It's been 20+ years since I've heard it. As a kid I never really undertook this song I just liked the sound. This really hit me hearing and actually understanding it for the first time. Thank you guys for this one.
Like several have said, many kids were found due to this video. 1 kid was found that didn't want to be found! The kid came from a very abusive home and finally got away only to be featured in this video. I never heard the rest of the story
If i recall correctly.. ( i was the same age as the night girl when i first saw this.. been a while) but i remember there was like two versions of ths video. Same video, just diff “Missing” posters to get faces out there. Bless Soul Asylum for trying...
This song was like an anthem to me when I was younger!! I never got into prostitution but I was taken & abused, molested. Thankfully I made it back home but this song, this video, brought so much awareness to what young kids were going thru, had gone thru & that most of them never went back home!!! Its beyond heartbreaking!! At least it opened the eyes of lots of people to what was really going on!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO THIS SONG!!!!!
the little boy at the end Thomas Gibson, the police believe was killed by his dad, he disappeared from his front yard, the dad was a deputy sheriff at the time. There still haven't found his body,
When you see a homeless person, talk to them. Some would just love to be treated normal. They get pushed so far away from everyone and that's what hurts the most. And a lot do drugs and drink cause when you got to sleep under a bridge it's hard to do sober. Bugs biting you all night. If you drunk you can sleep right thru it. I've been homeless most of my life. I had a nice family and home but being from a small town with only the poultry plant to look forward to was depressing so I hitchhiked from GA to L.A. and by the time I got there a lot of stuff had happened on the road. It's hard to come back from the dark thing's you have to do. Bit when someone talks to me it makes me feel 100% like I'm normal again.

This song spoke to me as a teen and was my absolute favorite. Now it makes me cry that I was so lost then and grateful I am no longer so lost.
Can you help me remember how to smile
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded
Life's mystery seems so faded
I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just drownin' in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train
Everything is cut and dry
Day and night, earth and sky
Somehow I just don't believe it
Runaway train never going back
Wrong way on a one way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Bought a ticket for a runaway train
Like a madman laughin' at the rain
Little out of touch, little insane
Just easier than dealing with the pain" those words break my heart!
It’s unfathomable, to think there are people amongst us that would use another person for their selfish gain, and disregard them with no conscience…..The “best” in our world, are some of the people we get to know………The “worst” in our world, are some of the people we get to know….🤷🏼♂️
Wow haven’t heard this song in forever!!❤️❤️❤️
I just love your love for each other ❤️
I haven’t heard this song in so many years and it amazes me that I remember all the words. So deep and meaningful. 😢😔
I love this song! Always have! Your analysis and this video drove home it's depth. At first listen it's so melodic, you can miss the darkness. Thanks, guys!
This song always brings a tear to my eye. What it did to bring families back together. always like the tune and then watched the video.Wow.
We all start out as innocent little babies. Then life and genetics take over.
This is still such a profound song and video. Absolutely timeless! Great reaction ya'll ❤
GREAT song & video choice. VERY VERY POWERFUL! Thank you for playing this.
Black Gold, and Without A Trace. Nice reaction guys. There's actual a 25th anniversary version with the same message.
FUN FACT: Because of this music video, they were able to find a lot of these people. don't believe me? look it up!
This was one of my fave songs when it came out, but never had watched the video. It means much more now that I have. Thanks for the reaction.
Much love out to you and your. Good vibes
Deep song
This video brought home several who were shown, as well as many who weren't... The song is one of many that got me through my youth...
You were FORTUNATE to have that inner self worth! GOD BLESS!!!!
This is one of my all time favorite bands. Seen them in concert a few times. Love their new album
One of my favorites growing up. Was in 9th grade when this came out. Very touching.
Had to google it up. Till 2022 there were saved 21 of 36 children or juvenile shown in this video! Still can lose some tears, reading about this great success.
Thanks for choosing this song . A lot of grunge has amazing truth in their music
Id like to thank you for sharing something difficult that u went through. People need to know theres sunshine on the otherside of the difficult times.
One of my favorite, and saddest songs of all time. Sometimes I feel this way..Thanks for the reaction. Love you guys! I cry every time I see this video..lawd. seems like the worst of the video was edited out. Which is a good thing.
Always like your real talk with videos like this. Great song. Great reaction. That's why I keep coming back.
Soul Asylum is such an amazing band!!!!
Jai-you look freaking AMAZING!!!! You’re just glowing all over 😊
ETA: the song/video isn’t just about kids who ran away.
No matter how many times I hear this song - and as a Gen Exer I have heard it a lot - I cry every single time. Great reaction, guys.
One of my favorite songs and bands
And we all sit and let this continue year after year😢.
I love doing the Good Vibes with you all! I forgot about this song, been awhile. ♡♡♡
Jacob Wetterling was my mom's "boogyman example" of not talking to strangers or getting into a bad situation.
Tears me up every time I see it...
This song always gets to me! Thank you both! Much love Half and Jai!
