    Should you pinch your fig trees? It depends on several variables… Do you have a long or short growing season? Is your tree quite young? Which varieties are you growing? Do you want to induce early fruiting or lateral branching? Check the video to find out more and leave a LIKE and a Comment if you have any questions (it’s getting increasingly difficult, but I will try to answer as many as I can)

      When to pincch

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  4 года назад +1

      Early in the season, usually around May (but it can be a bit later depending on variety), if you don't see small figs forming, so pinching will induce early fruiting.

    I bought a half-dead fig “bush” at Lowes for $1 last year and although it seemingly died on me last year in the 3-gallon pot I transplanted it to, it rebounded this year from just the single 3” branch that was clinging to life. It is currently about 2ft tall with three equal branches and a couple smaller ones that just sprouted from the base. If this thing survives another winter I am going to buy several more because they are one of the most delicious and most-versatile fruits that I have ever had! I was under the impression they needed something warmer than a zone 6 climate or else I would have made a fig forest in my yard. 😂

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  4 года назад +5

      Zone 6 is far from ideal, but if you grow fig trees in containers and care them correctly tmost varieties will reward you with very good fruits. Good luck with your fig tree.

    I have been pinching my cannabis plants for years to promote bushy growth and low plant height.
    I also found that squeezing soft new growth, and bending the softened stem witout breaking it, also promotes outward growth, while preserving the main shoot, which will heal and correct itself after energy has gone to the lower branches.

    I'm not convinced yet that pinching helps fruit development. I only have a couple of years experience with fig trees. But from what I've seen after I've pinched it's not so much the fruit is getting larger quicker but more branches developing. I get 3 or 4 new branches at every pinch. So in my mind the energy is not going to the fruit but going to make new branches. Which I like it produces a beautiful looking tree. I pinched in late June and the fruits are not moving along as quickly as I'd like but the tree is.

    [edit] btw, is that spotting of the leaves at 9:40 a fungal growth like tomato plants get (blight)? If so, what is the treatment?

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  4 года назад +4

      Hi, Jeff. Thanks for the nice comment. That spotting is rust (a fungal disease that is very common, near the ocean where I live, with the high degree of humidity). It can be controlled (preventively) with several fungicides, like the ones copper-based. Nevertheless, even with spraying, its difficult to avoid and it doesn't affect the fruits, so I prefer not to spray my fig trees.

      Thanks for the nice comment. The pruning mastic I use is resin based - ""Arbokol Resin Putty" which I believe is only available in Europe . The old one (Arbokol Classic) was tar based and the smell was not nice. I prefer the new resin based one, as it seems more "natural" and according to the manufacturer, let's the plant tissues "breath" when healing (the "classic" formed an air tight cover). The tissues seem to heal a bit better with the new formulation, although the trees were I used the old one are still fine (5-6 months after the graft was made I usually remove it ).

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  4 года назад

      Don't bother removing the leaves that are turning brown, Clement. The tree will get rid of them naturally. Nevertheless, if you are in a very humid area and the leaves are prone to develop fungus, its recommended that you remove them from the soil as soon as possible, so they don't turn into spore reserves that will reinfect the tree, next year.

    My avocado tree 5 yrs old grow from seed.never have fruit.thanks for your video

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  3 года назад

      Hi, Emmy. Pinching your avocado tree won't have the same effect as in the fig trees. if you pinch the apical growth, the plant will react by branching below that point but won't necessarily produce fruits. If your tree is not producing fruits you probably have a pollination problem. Although avocados can self-pollinate they can produce very few fruits (or none at all) if the conditions aren't right. In your case, the tree is not grafted so, it will take much longer to produce fruits (you might have to wait a few more years).

    Do you pinch out some fillets on a young tree so that the plant will concentrate on root development instead of fruit? Is that necessary with a fig? Similarly on an older tree would you pinch out some fillets so that the remaining fruit grows larger and matures earlier?

      Its difficult to say what might be the problem, but it seems that your variety might not be well adapted to your local conditions (very late ripening, for instance) or it may need pollination (see my video on the subject to know more - ruclips.net/video/kctIFkVaZQs/видео.html). In either case, I would replace it with another (by grafting, for instance).

    Sir can we graft an apple tree at the time of planting it?

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  4 года назад +2

      Yes, you can, but the tree might take a while to start growing again, as it has to adapt from planting and grafting at the same time.

    My two year old fig tree leafs are turning yellowish, i been over watering plat adjacent to it

      Were I live, most fig trees leaves are turning yellow (and they are not being watered in excess). It can happen for many different reasons and usually doesn't hurt the plant, as it bounces back the next season (fig trees are quite resilient).

    i have no figs on my plant.how do i make it fruit?

      Some varieties might take a few years to produce fruit. After that, if it still doesn't produce fruit, try to control its vegetative growth through adequate pruning to induce fruiting.
