It is getting hard to find good parts these days. Where do you find a good volume pot ? I used to get parts from Michael Percy but I don't know what happened to him.
Building up a resistor ladder on a 24-position Grayhill switch is a great way to do it. Also there are still high end ALPS and NOBLE pots to be found out there.... Our newest gear will be using relay-switching resistor ladders controlled by a PIC microcontroller, easily remote controlled and yes you can offset one channel with code to make a balance function. Nice video. Good thing about Manley are the same standards for building audiophile and pro audio devices, even white cathode followers they use a lot are almost the same for both apps. One thing that differs from a few high end manufacturers is use of switching supplies, they probably added slow turn on for HT because tubes last longer this way.
1:02:33 I was actually wondering what was different about this video... I had not noticed till now. You don't need a Steadicam, just get one of these gimball holders and shoot with your iphone...
I have a bunch of musician friends with home studios who swear by this kit. Ultra reliable and killer sound quality. As one said to me once, gear for life.
Can you please not use a stereo microphone or knock the audio to mono? The beginning of the video is pretty much only on the left side of the spectrum.
@@AnalogPlanet Even if it did (it doesn't. It's up to the manufacturer to implement that in software, at least for Android), that unbalanced phase (too heavy to left or right) is distracting. The first few minutes of the video are 95% to the left of the spectrum. This is not bad audio, but many people will see it like it is. You don't have to switch to a mono mic, but at least either mix the sound dual mono or avoid spending too much time with audio on one side with nothing on the opposite side. This is the same reason why people don't like interviews where you have one person panned hard left and the other hard right.
Not gonna like that motion detection power switch, rather than a physical one on that prototype.. urrgh. Very interesting video. stayed through it even without a Steady Cam ** good on 'ya.
Hi manleylabs, My personal preference, along with experience shows me that those who purchase equipment of this caliber want the impression of solid reliability that's instilled in a mechanical switch, as opposed to the somewhat cool factor novelty of an inherently less reliable electronic type. Whether this perception is deserved or not, the motion sense main power switch just doesn't give the same confidence or satisfaction as that of a mechanical, physical type. :-)
1:08:47 Also TLA and Tsakiridis Devices in Greece wind their own transformers... TLA made some big 845 amps back a decade ago (so did Tsakiridis). Both have now stopped making those amps. Surely that's a serious hi-fi crime.. LOL ......Eve Anna is so cool at 1:19:40.........yääh....this a new Prototyp of a pre Amp including the chinook phono......with this and that detailed circleboards in it........other company's wouldn't even tell you, what new product is coming next.......hell no.......they would kill you and put your dead body in the dumpster when you have seen only one detail for a secound ! I like the stealhead phono pre A LOT and thinking all the time about to buy it and combine it with the biggest integrated PrimaLuna amp from Kevin Deal. SADLY MANLEY DOESN'T OFFER ANY STEREO POWER AMPS.......only Monoblocks......that would break my bank. But when a new Manley Pre with the Chinook Phono Pre Board integrated comes out the year 2019, it could be a REALY good lower cost alternative, combined with the PrimaLuna Poweramp !!! Sadly I'm living in Germany, and PrimaLuna is difficult to get, because ordering it from K.D. doesn't make any sense, because I would have to pay nearly 27% Tax on the amp and shipping to Germany. DAMN IT...............BUT THIS WAS BY MANY MILES ONE OF YOUR MOST INFORMATIVE AND ENJOYABLE VID SINCE A LONG TIME Thank you very much indeed And Kevin Deal was right.....Eve Anna is a REALY COOL Chick 👍👍👍
1:10:20 More like an Edison cylindre... Actually, cutting a vinyl record is far harder to calculate that winding a layer on a transformer and that's why a cutting computer is used together with the cutting lathe: the winding wire only has a single fixed diameter - the vinyl groove width varies constantly! (The transformer design itself of course is a different story.) What this machine does is nothing short of amazing: imagine laying 2000 turns of a wire as thick as a hair side by side, without any error, overlaps or gaps. Before these machines were made, this was done by hand: someone had to crank the spindle and guide the wire for thousands of turns per coil wound.
Why don't they use KR audio tubes or do they, and getting them to manufacture tubes for them. Why don't they put the Transformers in cans to cut-out interference. I thought you would say it's Wired for Sound hahah
Would you have an email for her, I've got something she might be interested in a studio EMI I think microphone preamp may be the only one made what's a between the 40s and 50 or older. Nothing on EMI's website or Museum. I was told was made for Crystal Palace transmitter with power amplifier what I've got. I don't want to throw it away or get it thrown away, it should go to a good home she could reverse engineer it I believe it's only one of a kind made the serial number 000001.
NOS tubes are almost always better made than modern Russian or Chinese ones. The transformers are in cans. The mu-metal boxes that say Manley Iron on them.
@@gotham61 far as I know KR audio tubes are the best they're not Russian or Chinese they Czech, and no the main Transformers were not in cans only the little ones not sure why they wouldn't put them in cans
KR doesn't even make small signal tubes like those being discussed. Not do they make standard pentode and tetrode tubes like Manley uses in their power amps. Just various triodes like the 300b and 211 that aren't used in most Manley products. KR is a tiny company, way smaller than Manley.
gotham61 not to mention they are targeting the hifi audiophile market, more for those willing to buy a van den hul cable that costs as much as a massive passive. Yeah I’ve sold a third set of vdh cables. I got them for free. 4-8k for stereo pairs? Ach!!!
13:10 Subtle Apple plug in? "Works every day for 40+ years and still going strong" kind of thing? Apple computers still looked a cut above the rest even back then though. For sure, one could replicate this code into an Arduino or Raspberry Pi. Custom software of that era should be a piece of cake to de-compile and reverse engineer. But only if that would be legal. Perhaps, one could even add a couple of sensors to detect when the scribe is worn down etc. But at the end of the day, it's the engraving machine that's fairly low tech not the PC. On the other hand, it will never break. Interesting bit of PC history there.
Fremer misses the point that Good stuff comes from good engineering and a lot of care. it is not about Analog vs Digital. Those are 125khz DIGITAL power supplies that are lighter and better not cheaper. And they do not interfere with the sound like the old transformer based supplies.
Good engineering and a lot of care is also not dependent on which nation it comes from. People usually diss stuff made overseas, but will not even bat an eye when high quality stuff comes from there.
You obviously brought to the tour all of your prejudices about me. I didn't bring any about switch mode power supplies nor did I use the word "digital" since switch mode power supplies are not digital. I have no idea what you are talking about. I asked the kinds of questions I always ask to get more information.
1:14:00 What's amazing here is Michael's attention span has never lasted this long (just measure the amount of time between jokes) - and while watching a coil being wound no less!
Cam guy. Don't interrupt! Treat factory, scratch that, all people with some deference man. Maybe cancel the bad humor. Now, what camera is that? The audio is really good.
Shaun Koreshowell/Bunds there are only a few people who are highly regarded for designing SMPS for high performance audio.. These are David Berning, that guy who designed the Trinity DAC, and Bruno Putzeys who designed the HV modules for EveAnna.. Maybe there are others but I don’t know them.
manleylabs ps: have you guys messed around with any elrog tubes? Or have you been keeping up with the new western electric... hopefully they are able to do better than Aspan pittmans handmedowns of the 6L6 assemblyline that led to the hyped up rch labs llc tube tease in Carson city and my subsequent 9 month depression from my best friend deciding to financially compromise me by stealing from my account when I had won my much sought after general radio tube bridge and so much equipment and materials for a mere three digit sum it was embarrassing. I’ve never heard an auctioneer so upset with the limited attendees, as things were won for little, and things they shouldn’t have had in the first place making it too gimicky when they should’ve focused on development of their actual tubes before worrying about tons of cryochambers and shit... and less robinair or actually harbor freight vacuum pumps... though the couple of rigs they had were more than adequate. That’s what happens when you think throwing money at something and haphazardly collecting all this great crap will make it work or have output. I swear, if I had not been screwed by my friend, I at least could’ve been as well off but better than glasslinger, but in the end I lost even the primaluna for only 20 bucks... I lay in the laundry basket with psychosis for days! I will never suffer logistic or financial lack of preparation again!!! One day in the next few years I hope to have my catching up done and don’t worry, I’m too mediocre for competition with yourselves: though I still need to find others in my age range with the same interest in extrapolation and praxis of many disciplines with the extreme aversion to the common nature of ostensible truths and especially the fulfillment of impetus by lip service, vicariously living through the plan over the execution. And with all that, I sure have accomplished a lot by saying all this tmi in a tangential barrage. I deserve a break! I’ll get to work tomorrow ;)
@Vox Daze I never said that. What I said was I embrace that the Molex crimping machine reps trained my assembly people in Spanish, their primary language, so that perfect understanding was achieved about how to use the machine. How dare you try to insinuate that the wonderful people who work at Manley Labs are "cheap" just because they are of Mexican descent. I love my employees and they are well paid, and enjoy full benefits, 401K plans, health care, and all that. We have all been working together for DECADES. We are like family.
manleylabs ps. Just like the triggered and often offended pc folks who constantly create conflict, the racism and violence they see everywhere is like a projection of their own assumptions and bad thoughts. It’s his view of your actions that reveals something about how he sees central and South Americans.
I've toured Manley Labs with the LAOC Audio Club and visited for a repair. In addition I've chatted with Eveanna at a few audio shows. From these personal experiences I will say she and the staff I met are truly dedicated, helpful, wonderful people. I fail to see what the ancestry of her employees has to do with anything when they are such knowledgable, contented (did you see how long some have worked there?) people. They care about the quality of what they build and that "family" bond is a major contributor to that.

DAMN IT...............BUT THIS WAS BY MANY MILES ONE OF YOUR MOST INFORMATIVE AND ENJOYABLE VID SINCE A LONG TIME
Thank you very much indeed
And Kevin Deal was right.....Eve Anna is a REALY COOL Chick 👍👍👍
Manley... quality stuff combined with cool looks. Valve technology too - what's not to want?
1:10:20 More like an Edison cylindre... Actually, cutting a vinyl record is far harder to calculate that winding a layer on a transformer and that's why a cutting computer is used together with the cutting lathe: the winding wire only has a single fixed diameter - the vinyl groove width varies constantly! (The transformer design itself of course is a different story.)
What this machine does is nothing short of amazing: imagine laying 2000 turns of a wire as thick as a hair side by side, without any error, overlaps or gaps. Before these machines were made, this was done by hand: someone had to crank the spindle and guide the wire for thousands of turns per coil wound.
Love this video! Ms. Manley .... you rock! 🤘🏽
hicieron bien trensar el cable...
Ach!!!
TOOO COOOL !!!
That headphone amp is a dream, one day...one day....
$4.5K, no thanks especially for something that ugly.
@@AnalogPlanet Throwing the P-word when someone is critical is a bit much. May kirchhoff's laws descend on you and keep you safe.
@@HermieDaddy given what he wrote versus what's on the video, it was either "prejudice" or "back on your meds". What would you suggest?
And yeah I’m always seeing them sell on eBay
Like test equipment or reference speakers
1:14:00 What's amazing here is Michael's attention span has never lasted this long (just measure the amount of time between jokes) - and while watching a coil being wound no less!
1:28:48 Someone beat Michael in his own game!
Cam guy. Don't interrupt! Treat factory, scratch that, all people with some deference man.
Maybe cancel the bad humor.
Now, what camera is that? The audio is really good.
Switching power supply... crazy
Input transformers rule???
Shaun Koreshowell/Bunds there are only a few people who are highly regarded for designing SMPS for high performance audio.. These are David Berning, that guy who designed the Trinity DAC, and Bruno Putzeys who designed the HV modules for EveAnna.. Maybe there are others but I don’t know them.
Crazy SUPERIOR! ⚡️⚡️⚡️
manleylabs for this particular circuit or would you even start extending such developments to single ended power triode circuits?
manleylabs ps: have you guys messed around with any elrog tubes?
Eveanna has a good faceplate!
you forgot Tom Jones poster !!
My God, Floppy Drives, LOL
Manley?? who said reality wasn't ironic and funny as hell-lololololol
As the late Bill hicks said "Is life too f**ckin' weird or what??"
This work should stay in Chino, not China said Trump! America first!!!!
We are like family.
manleylabs I appreciated the way carvin tried to run as well. But he’s just being a troll. Don’t take it to heart.
manleylabs ps.
