In 2016 I made the decision to live the last 1/3 of my life doing what I love and being able to enjoy every summer to its fullest. I was already saving and investing. From that year, I begun saving/investing 65% of my net salary. In late 2019, I left the corporate world and moved to a beautiful Greek island and never looked back. It turned out that it was one of the two best decisions of my life. The other one, was to leave a long-term relationship where I was not appreciated and growing. Folks, our most valuable asset that we have control is our TIME. Last week I was enjoying an amazing sunset and literally broke into tears from joy and gratitude. Wishing everyone the very best!!

I deeply regret WASTING 15 years of my life in a job I absolutely hated. What a waste of life. I retired 2 months ago at age 62. I had my critics, but I couldn’t give one f$&k what they think. The mental and physical changes even after only 2 months removed from that hell hole is unbelievable. The thought of ever going back is inconceivable.

I always say, never regret anything. If you can shift your perspective, you’ll see that those experiences taught you how to truly appreciate what you have now. They gave you a deep understanding of the value of sacrifice, and because of that, you can live your life from a position of F*CK YOU, on your terms, with no apologies. Those years you gave up? They weren’t lost; they were the foundation for the freedom you have today. Congratulations brother! You deserve it!!!

I am in my early 60s and retired at 53. Lots of people gave me pushback because they had difficulty grasping the concept of not working if you don’t have to. I looked at my life as stages. I earned everything I have now through a lot of hard work, but I owe it to myself to “stop and smell the roses” in my final stage of life. In my case I left the country after I retired and live in Latin America. It allowed me to get away from all the negative things happening in America while appreciating my new environment. I have yet to meet anyone who regrets retirement.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I has spent same number of years in the civil service, she is investing through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning towards having our retirement.

    • @joshbarney114

This is true. I'm in my mid 40's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

I completely agree; I am in my mid 40s, approaching retirement, and have approximately over 2million dollars in external retirement funds. I am debt free and have very little money in retirement funds compared to the total value of my portfolio over the past three years. To be honest, the Fin-advisor can only be neglected, not rejected. One of the best things to do especially as an older person whose not ready to be old yet is to grab 2 10 lb weights and start doing basic arm exercises. Then do basic leg squats off of a bed with about 40 lbs to start. Start with about 5 minutes for a few weeks then 10 mins. Then 15. You dont have to lift heavy weights to see great results. Mid 50's here, and I agree with everything Chad has said.
Don't lose yourself while "the machine" attempts to grind you down.
For myself I decided to split the difference and have a mindset I implemented at 50 of being semi-retired for the near future.
Your 50's is a lucrative time to sell your accrued knowledge and expertise as a consultant or educator.
Another suggestion I'd offer is to buy durable goods (cars, electronics, etc) used whenever possible.
You'll save quite a bit of wealth to apply towards your retirement investments.
This also helps to use all the expected lifespan of products to keep them out of the landfill.

Fun times to be in, especially as a young person in EU. The government is taking well over half of what I earn (45% flat out and the rest whenever I spend that money) to keep an unsustainable system on life support (pensions, "free" healthcare, social security, etc). While I very well know that I likely won't benefit at all from any of it in 35+ years when I will technically retire, I am still forced to pay all this extra money that would otherwise allow me to afford a modest and decent lifestyle, even though I am relatively frugal. I do try to keep a positive mindset, but I just don't see a light at the end of the tunnel and this makes it hard to stay motivated. Finding a partner who wants to build a life together, starting a family, buying a house/apartment, working on something that is more than a form of supporting corporate greed...all these things feel like a distant dream, if anything.
The only good thing I have going for me right now is the fact that in the past couple of years I have managed to develop a rather healthy lifestyle. I go on a difficult hike or long cycle almost every weekend (amazing for mental and physical health), exercise every day, cook 95%+ of my meals from scratch and so on.

    • @ChadLisonbee

Keep choosing the healthy choices, and focus on your. Build your mind and body. Take care of your physical mental and spiritual hygiene. And your charisma will begin to flow.

"Semi" retired at 52 and loving life. I still work here and there, but free most of the time to do what I want. Owning without debt really makes a difference, also offsetting normal bills with things like solar to relieve electric bill or raising chickens or some other animal that produces and/or growing crops to reduce food shopping also helps alot as well.

Wise words! We used to raise our own beef. We still buy our beef by the cow, but we aren’t able to raise them anymore. Congratulations on your partial retirement!! That’s huge at your age!

@@ChadLisonbee dont know if this will work for everyone, but allowing my wife to take care of ALL the finances is what did it. I figured in the beginning of our relationship that women love to spend money, so let them spend money! if we go under, whos to blame? Haha seriously though she took care of everything, my money was definitely her money, so long as I got what i need (and occasionally what i want, also got a weekly allowance) what did i need to control money for? You gotta play by your strengths and weaknesses, her strength was budgeting money. Besides, she is 7 years younger than me, and has all the grey hair. ;)

All correct except: Do NOT retire in the USA. The hospitals and insurance companies will take every cent you have remaining , despite Medicare.

Life should be about balance. What's stopping folks enjoying their life now, trying new experiences, hobbies, travelling, finding new connections in their 20's, 30s, 40's, 50's, 60's alongside working?
Is it the US work and annual leave culture thats preventing this balance?

It’s people over spending. Consumerism and debt consumption. Most don’t have an income problem they have a spending problem. I totally agree life should be about balance, but to find that balance we need to realize the damage we’re doing to our future. I appreciate you! Have a wonderful day!
