  • Shannon Park has been abandoned for years, and used to be a thriving Military living community until being decommissioned by the government and was closed in 2004 and remaining residents were moved to military housing at Willow Park.

I grew up here in the late 90s. My Father was in a the navy, so we got posted to Nova Scotia. We didn't live in these buildings, but i attended daycare in one of them and went to the school and pool across from these buildings. I remember the playgrounds.
Crazy to see what's happened to the place...
    Thanks for uploading.

I lived in Wallis Heights the other part of Shannon park community, and living in that community for the 9 years I did from 1991 to 2000, I will never forget. Dances, teen town, candy counter, swimming pool, skating at the arena, walking the army trail or skating on the frozen swamp.

Thank you for posting this. I was too young at the time (late 1950s) to have memories beyond a couple of impressions. I appreciate your sharing of this footage - it gives me a very interesting perspective.

I lived in this community sometime between 1984 and 1989. I have some spotty memories of the place, but I remember it used to be fun and safe to run around as a child, everyone who lived there was Military so you knew they'd look out for you. My dad got posted to Esquimalt/Victoria and we moved to the West Coast right before I started Kindergarten.
Things I remember about this place:
    - Peddling a bicycle on training wheels that was too big for me, falling off into a puddle and cutting my hand on broken glass that was inside the puddle. Trying to get back into my apartment building's back door that locks from the inside with a bleeding hand, crying till some random adult hears me and lets me in.
    - A GIANT snowman some of the adults made that was at least 3 stories tall one winter where it snowed so much you could walk off the balconies on the 2nd floor onto the snow.
    - One of the women in the building looked after the kids as a sort of day care and for lunch she made us soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, but she used the Kraft Singles for the sandwiches and I didn't like them and refused to eat it and she made me sit at the table for at least an hour afterwards till I grudgingly ate about 1/4 of it. To this day I refuse to eat Kraft Singles.
    - Playing with a Canada Post Truck made of Lego.
    - Cutting my thumb with my dad's bic razor, and I remember that it didn't hurt at all because the blade was so sharp.
Ahh, nostalgia... After moving to the west coast years later we heard that one of my old babysitters was arrested in Halifax for murdering someone with an axe... creepy.

I visited here in summer 2001, I met my then girlfriend in the UK then came to visit her family here.
Good memories hanging around the park and going to the swimming pool everyday.
Much simpler times as it was just before 9/11.

This is sad to see abandoned complexes that could have easily been converted to low cost housing for those without a place to call home in Dartmouth. The federal government should make this right and donate these to a society that can convert into a meaningful home and sustainable place to house those in need.

Thank you for this. I lived there in 1973 and have dreamed of it many times. Seeing it from the drone's perspective is almost like seeing those dreams again. I remember fishing off the jetty and playing organized fastball, playing with matches and running through the woods. There were even apple trees near the water. It was truly a magical time, and I must admit, it saddens me to see it all run down. Still, I will always be grateful for this last look. Unless of course you feel like firing up the drone again and get us in there again ; )

I grew up there! had the best playground in Dartmouth! I learned how to bike, roller-blade, play road hockey and learned how to play grounders all in that very place. Great community of people there with many great memories. It is a shame they didn't house people or let people to continue living there though... I wonder why. But it's not a spooky place, really just some apartments all empty. Overgrown grass, nothing much. Interesting to watch, "Hey, that's where I squashed that fly on that wall." or "I remember when I fell and hurt my knee in that spot, and a man carried me home to my parents." That was also probably the best elementary school around at the time. Canex used to be the corner store there. Swimming pool and skating rink. Rink may still be open as well.

You know kiwanis tried to get the playground equipment after it was decommissioned to set up for the underprivileged and instead the tore it down and sent it to the landfill.

+Nigel Gruszczynski ___ Too funny I seen the metal cloths line I got my tongue stuck to one winter, The Complex --- Saturday Movies, the book Mobil, the swing that split me head open, ah to be a kid, I wonder how many of us are or got sick from the Asbestos on the pipes -- how many times I seen kids poking fingers in it.

Lived there for ten years. I miss the atmosphere there. As a curious kid it was an awesome place to call home. The thought of the place takes many of us back there, especially if you play music of the era as a backdrop to this video. Thanks for posting it folks!

So glad you posted this. I have great memories of running free there with the hundreds of other kids and have thought of this place many times over the years. I live far away now and wondered if the place still stood. The park had some drama as I recall: One time my older brother fished off the jetty and caught a plastic bag with a human hand in it. The police decided it must have come down the St. Lawrence. Who knows. :) Thanks for this.

This property is beautiful and right on the Halifax Harbour. Surely there is something that could be done. The owners of the Shannon Park housing complex are the Federal Government of Canada who abandoned the buildings 10+ years ago and have allowed the buildings to remain vacant, to fall into disrepair and to deteriorate from zero maintenance. No other property owner would be allowed to be so neglectful. Even if the floor tiles and walls have asbestos; that problem can be fixed through removal. Sure the buildings need new roofs, fixtures, kitchens , walls and flooring but the infrastructure is there - you can do it if you have a Can-Do attitude. The construction industry is smart and is capable of completing a full renovation of the buildings. It certainly would create lots of jobs in this area. I propose the site could be used for a mixed use for Rentals or Condo's for Low Income Housing, Athlete's Village, Seniors Housing, Student Housing, Temporary Refugee Village, or all of the aforementioned. It may even be possible to have an Outpatient Day Surgery Clinic particularly for Ortho Procedures or other surgeries or medical procedures where patient beds are needed for 1-3 days for overnight visits. This might help out with the long wait times for Health Care in Nova Scotia.

I grew up there too. It's fun to look at the buildings and say I lived in that one, and that one, and that one. it's such a sad waste of housing. I'm sure there could have been something done with it to benefit someone. Lots of memories.

Did you know that Shannon Park helped the community of Tufts Cove for a few years when there where too many kids going to school in the area .. this was about 1955 we had to go to Shannon Park school for grade 9 .. it was a very modern school too. and I had friends that lived in the apartments and the apartments where very nice. I watched them building the places from where I live across the street and up on the hill.. cant beleive they let this happen to the place.

Loved the close up shots down low on the streets. I kept trying to peek into the windows and see what was inside any of the rooms. Did the drone ever get close to seeing inside any of the windows? Great work, again, and many thanks.

I lived there in the Early 60's when it looked much nicer than what we see here.
The city is NEVER going to put in low rental housing on that prime real estate especially with the reputation North End Dartmouth already has.
There was talk of a sports complex or stadium which is not likely either.
I figure condos or a small business park.

Lived there in the early 70s. It was a great place in the summer. Catching the ferry in the morning. Playing by the shore. (Also, breaking the ice in the winter.) I could see the Dr Seuss smokestacks from my bedroom. I was there while the bridge was being built and still recall the dynamiting and all the construction bustle. My friend and i cornered a huge rat outside our building, thinking it was a dog, apparently. Our neighbour, still carrying two sacks of groceries, managed to haul us inside.
I can't recall which building was the Cannex. Is it still standing?

I loved living in this place in the 60s and 70s. As Matthew Heal said, it was a safe place for kids of military families to grow and play. We had an indoor rink, an indoor swimming pool, playgrounds, Scouts and Guides, schools, a convenience store, everything a kid could want. And as Matthew said, everyone understood what it was like when a parent was away at sea.
