  • Sorry for the night lights, but truck was needed for the next day, brake switch is a common problem along with the wires that are attached to the plug, on some cars the wire breaks off..not a bad job, just have to tuck yourself under the dash..the only tool used was a pliers for the spring clip...if you break the locking tab off the plug, you should replace the plug and wiring with the supplied parts in the Autozone replacement kit...S4E113

    Video was good enough for a newbie such as myself. I managed to fix it within an hour. Just a reminder to any other newbies to unplug your battery to not cause a short and burn a fuse. This fixed all my problems. Note I have an 03 XLT and I had to take off the wiring harness and put the green and red wire together like a subwoofer or speaker wire. Cutting the casing the receiving wire is in needs to be done carefully to not cut a wire short like I did.

      Definitely if you are replacing the wire and or connectors than yes, disconnect the negative battery terminal..

    Thank you very much for posting this video! I was able to fix my 02 Explorer on my own with just a $25 part
    . I did have to splice in a new harness because the oem did not match up to the after market part but it was easy - disconnected the negative on the battery and spliced the two wires just like stereo speaker wire - easy! And it’s fixed :) ! Many thank you’s!

    • @revv2490
      @revv2490 Год назад +1

      @@alyoungcuda there's a little switch on the right side of the steering column that allows you to shift in and out of park. The brake shift interlock switch. I replaced that thinking that was what was wrong lol was in fact not so I've just kept my steering column exposed to bypass it. I think it's the brake switch that's bad so I'll be putting that in soon to find out

    Hey man. My 2005 explorer has the same issue. But my switch is loose and wiggles when i press the brake. I think it's cuz I don't have any washers on mine. They probably broke being so old. Where do i get the washers? And the brake light works and I can shift out of park when i press the switch manually. So my switch may still be good

    • @alyoungcuda
      @alyoungcuda  Год назад +1

      Buy a new switch and it comes with new washers..otherwise you need to measure the center hole and go try to find washers with that same inside diameter hole to fit on that pin..the washer looks like those washers for an oil drain plug too but might not be the same thickness..too thin and it will wobble, too thick and it will go past the hole for that locking pin you pull off and you won't be able to insert the pin

    So without the break light switch working properly your break lights won’t even turn on and the vehicle won’t shift from park?

    • @alyoungcuda
      @alyoungcuda  6 лет назад +1

      Gilbert Nolazco correct...the car needs to see that your foot is on the brake pedal/switch to allow you to shift the car..its from the old days when a little kid can start a car and place it in drive or reverse because they see you do it and move the car, possibly killing someone or property ..it just happens to be the same switch for the brake lights and cruise control shut off if you have cruise control..
