We had the technology to build something like this 105 years ago. Think how big an operation the railroad must have been to require this much office space. It would be nice if amtrak stopped here again. The renovation project will provide a lot of construction jos, then 2500 permanent Ford employees move in and spend money in town. This is a huge investment on the part of Ford Motor Company and a great help to the city.
This enormous place was built during the golden age of passenger railroads. Today the financial health of railroads has never been better, however its freight trains, more particularily inter modal stack trains, that's their bread and butter. Its ironic that iconic Ford who helped put American on wheels, plus the post war freeway system together, that contributed to the decline of passenger rail travel. . Now Ford has purchased and will place their technology team there where the once mighty New York Central Railroad and their Michigan Central Railroad once ruled over their vast mid western and Southern Canada operations.. The New York Central and the Michigan Central are both long gone, but Ford, also from that era, is not and is building into change and innovation and transitioning into electric, pickups and SUV's. The future looks bright indeed.
There are many ironies. Never knew such a wreck existed here, much less in Detroit until introduced to it at the beginning of Geoffrey Reggio's Naqoyqatsi (Yo Yo Ma solo), the last of his 'Qatsi' trilogy - there are others. Railroads may have been flying high, but they were always run as risky financial toys of their owner/boards. Being a subsidiary of New York Central helped, but Michigan Central's obligations to complete the structure never fully finished the top floors, ever. So yes, it's a wonder the facility exists in the condition it has.

Everything has already been done.🥰🤩🥰
The building clearly needs a lot of work, I just hope it's still structurally sound. That concrete looks a little shoddy.
