Hi Jon 🙂 I came across your channel about a week ago and I just bought your book as I was watching this video 👍🏼 I turned 54 in October and I have loved pottery ever since I made my first piece in elementary school. It was an ashtray for my Dad 😄 it was in the shape of the letter J. His name was John too 😎 I never pursued my dream of being a Potter so I'm doing it now. It's something I have regretted my whole life so I guess better late than never, right? 🤷🏼♀️ I'm going to take a class soon - my husband actually bought me a wheel for my b-day which was a huge surprise 😲 I'm excited to see where this takes me. I love your videos, they are fun and informative and you get me all stirred up inside to get going on this new journey of mine. Your pieces are so cool, I just love seeing what you come up with. Please wish me luck 🤞🏼 I'm really praying I have a knack for this 🙏🏼 😄 thanks, Jon! God bless you
I’ve liking pottery for awhile, found out about a class, went to 2 classes, and love love it. Im kinda creative, your video is very informative. Thank you. Love Youtbue, can learn anything at anytime.❤
Just started to take pottery classes and fell in love with the process. This video is great to know what should be my next steps. Oh and just order the book 💃
Google your local area plus "makerspace" . There are makerspaces all over the world and lots of them have a pottery area and are super affordable. I make pots at the Milwaukee Makerspace for $40 per month. We have 6 wheels and a super nice kiln.
I really enjoy your videos and your work. I started this hobby about four months ago, and am totally hooked! I’m very glad it was your videos that I came across first when beginning to attend “You Tube U” to learn, learn, learn!. Thanks so much for all you’ve taught me! Now if I could only center as quickly and consistently as you do! LoL. Practice, practice, practice and repeat! 😊 TYVM .....Kat
bought your book on amazon when it first came out . great info and reference material not to mention the awesome photography. thanks for sharing your wisdom and talent!
You know what Jon, Thats exactly how I got started. And exactly how I got my equipment. Some young kid in high school, parents got him a kiln and wheel and I dont think he used them more than a couple of times. Lucky me. :-)
you should make another video about how much you made in 2020. I thought the video you did over your 2019 profits was so interesting as I'm teaming up with my significant other, who also loves pottery, to buy our own wheel and kiln within the next few months!!
Lockdown was really hard, being away from the community guild after just learning and getting addicted to making pottery. This new lockdown will be better because I have a wheel on the way! I love to find really original items online to replicate. Can’t wait to get back at it!
Tanya, I've been experimenting with making planters with small birds on them with ivy embellishment. Though they are time consuming they could offer you a variation during the winter.
Hey Jon! Thanks for always delivering on these cool videos! A request for a next video would be any hot tips/tricks you’ve learned over the years of becoming a potter. I’m constantly learning new things in my studio either by fellow studio members or even my teacher/owner of the studio. And I’m like “how do they know all this cool stuff?!” as if there is some secret handbook I haven’t found yet. Thanks again! Happy Making
Jon, I love your videos, and I am a beginner potter! I'm 13, and I started 4 months ago! I got inspired by you! Also, by any chance do you or anyone you know does pottery lessons virtual? Also, for my birthday this year, I'm getting a kiln. Thanks!
Rachael, prepare to fail at first. Potters like Jon make it look easy. It's not! Take one thing and do it till you are good at it. Once you get good at that, you will have learned a lot more about clay, how it works, what doesnt work and why. That will help you with all your clay works. Be patient and take pride in your accomplishments. Most importantly, learn how to reclaim used clay!
Pottery is an outlet for me as a carer, so the majority of my pottery is given away or yeeted if it is reaalllyy ugly!🤣 Did a lot of handbuilding on my back deck during lockdown but about to learn throwing in Feb..😁🤗
Hi John. I am new to your chahnel and love it. I am new, and find my struggle is with glazing. the "experiments" I did ended up trash because the dipped combined with paint-on glazes over the top, went to battle and did not work. How about glazing for beginners" course?
Someone made a comment on a post where they said listen to tin, Jon said he’s smart, some tagged in a post about the video 😂 now I know what they are talking about.
I’ve been working with clay for about 3 years and just now taking a class at the college. Starts feb 2nd because of covid. I usually hand build and use molds and hand carve as well. Played with wheel here and there and loved it as well just suck at it a bit. Want and will get better at it. Another channel that’s awesome is Jessica Putnam.
This really makes me wish that I lived in a bigger town. I don't think there is anywhere in this small area that would even have a kiln I could rent or something. No classes or anything to take. Have to learn 100% on my own.. well, with RUclips help of course.
how should a 10 ft by 20 ft studio am in ca, so I have a big wheel and a kiln the wheel and kiln will be out side year around in a kind of a green house set up but the. rest will be in side if you could think soon this as I am new have not did a thing yet
Uhhhh literally perfect timing! I’ve been doing a lot of research this past week because I’ve been really interested in making my own pottery but had no idea on how to get started. When I saw that the supplies came with price tags in the four digit range I kinda lost hope (until I found your channel today). My husband and I are travel nurses and followed COVID to MN. Seems like a few places are still offering beginners classes while respecting social distancing practices. Any place in particular you’d recommend to get started? Were staying just outside of Minneapolis.

I know someone who quit being an attorney to be a sommelier for awhile. He eventually went back to lawyering but I think focusing on something else for a few years was good for him!
Hey John, I’ve been potting for about 15 years now. Actually selling pots for the last 10 or so. I think of it as a hobby that pretty much pays for itself and makes money for charities that I like. Anyway, I’ve gotten fairly good at it but at 77 years old I’m stuck with LOTS of pots that are unsold because I don’t like them or they have small imperfections. What to do with them? @overthehillpottery. Actually I’m John. This is my wife’s page.
Prices of kilns and electricity bills are something I'm really stressed out about. I'm learning ceramics and idk if I'll even be able to profit off of it
I’ve hit the point where I’m making things and my husband really wants me to sell. I’m very overwhelmed with the legal aspects of starting to sell it seems daunting. Is there any tips you would be able to give about diving deeper into the aspects of starting to sell.
Hehe 😬 I went straight to step 8, now I'm backtracking...lol...but I'm lucky in a sense, I CAN afford the 'hobby', I've researched enough to know I want to try (I've done some clay as well) and I have room for a studio/workshop. you should cover the pottery with a bag, or put it in a drying locker, its possible they are too wet and cracking because they are drying out too fast! good luck :)
@@katelynguthrie6173 yes I tried this to I had a couple of pots that I covered for a couple days to slow down the drying process still had the same effect
This would definitely be the ideal order of things, however, in a small area like where I live the closest Potter is over an hour away. I fell in love with wheel throwing by watching RUclips and was determined to try it out. The first experience I had was at a place called Klaystation which is mainly just for painting bisque ware but they offer a one time beginners wheel throwing class. The clay was already wedged and centered when we arrived and we got to make two very small items. There was no trimming or anything, basically we just got to operate the wheel and touch clay for about two hours and have something to take home. This only made me want to spend more time learning about throwing and a bit frustrated by all the steps I didn’t get to see in the class. I searched FOREVER for another class that would offer more. My local community college and the surrounding one doesn’t offer any ceramics classes. I ended up finding a potter who gives classes for beginners from her home studio. I am in the midst of taking those now (I’ve done 2 out of 6 classes so far.) I have only become more in love with throwing and it’s all I want to do! I recently blew a lot of my savings on buying a wheel and I plan to just practice and reclaim the clay I use for a while until I get good enough to keep my pieces. My teacher said she will fire my work for $10 a shelf in her kiln. So for now, i will be throwing in my grandparents barn and absorbing all the knowledge I can from RUclips, my classes, and a pottery book my grandpa bought me. When I move out (hopefully in about two years) I will make sure I have room to upgrade my studio and invest in a kiln and the electricity it requires. I said all this for the people who may be watching this but are in the same boat as I was before I found my teacher. I know there are a lot of small towns that just don’t have any potters, like literally zero. Just wanted to share my story!
