I use them both. They are together in me pedalboard to different ends. Bb1x is always on. It’s my regular tone source - something like a subtle 70s overdriven bass. When I need heavy distortion odb comes in adding it to the bb1x, that’s actually more like my preamp. Crazy stuff? The final result is all that matters.
benoit cardon I finally got the M89 and my conclusion is that the BB1x seems more fuzzy with more low end. while the MXR sounds more aggressive. (I might me wrong because i don't have the boss so i compare my pedal to BB1x videos)
ODB-3 is a secret genius pedal. In the manual it says for an overdrive sound, put the Gain and Treble at 0 and the Balance at max. That's what they intended to be its main setting, and sure enough it's awesome when used that way. They threw the extra gain and treble in there to cover fuzz territory but it tends to confuse people and give the wrong impression.
I recently did the same comparisons on low mid and bass sounds from my Moog Sub 37, and I agree with everything you're saying. There is no comparison. The extra $40 for the BB-1X is beyond worth it!
That's exactly the way as a bass preamp has to sound! Very organic sound in comparison with the other. Awesome pedal. Mine, it's already on the road to me!
Very good comparison. The BB-1X pedal has a more velvety sound compared to the ODB-3. Currently I'm using ODB-3 and I really liked the BB-1X, but here in Brazil it's very expensive to buy Boss pedals.
ODB-3 is a brilliant pedal if used properly. Run it in the effects loop and dial in: level: 11 o'clock, bass and treble: 3 o'clock, balance: just above 7 o'clock and Gain at 11 o'clock. Result: a touch of grit, no loss to lows or highs, instead boosted - especially lovely with a tube amp.
I am not a bass player but I got this pedal for my guitar OMG crank the clean channel on 6 or 7 on a peavey 6505+ add this pedal on it and its a nice low end chunky fuzz just grabs you by the balls fuzz :) Who knew this pedal would make a great fuzz pedal for us guitarist? Also add a clean boost and a tube screamer with it and you will be really rocking on it.
I find them both pretty usable, although I prefer the BB-1X over the ODB-3, I would use them both at the same time and use the BB-1X in order to warm the signal and push the ODB-3 to new sounds... that would surely give you some better and more usable sounds out of the Bass Overdrive....
It kind of sounds like a guitar pedal to me. I could be wrong, but it looks like the drive doesn't effect the level of the clean signal at all so the blend is trying to mix a really big distorted signal with a really small clean signal. If that's the case, the blend is almost useless because the clean signal is going to be dwarfed be the overdrive signal at almost any position on the knob and the problem gets worse the more drive you use, when you need to blend in some clean signal the most.
I plug the ODB3 into power amp in bypassing the pre amp...sounded great i would say better than plugging it into the regular amp input...I am sure that the BB-X1 would sound better there too. since they have a bass and treble knob they are perfect for a pedal pre amp into the power power amp in.
Distortion is its own form of compression, so it's not hugely vital with a distorted tone... BUT, get your threshold and release right and it would sound even more epic!
Thank you for the comparison and helping me decide - The BB-1x is suited more for my needs/desires. Besides, I'd probably buy the 1x regardless just for the improvement in color over the yellow puke tone of the obd3 blaaa! lol
Im trying to find a nice drive sound such as the sound Adam Clayton has in "Endless Deep" by U2 I think BB-1X can get to that sound, can you help me? :)
Eric94 Adam Clayton uses an Odb-3. I used this pedal for a loooong time. But it’s noise were on my way lots and lots of times. Noisy pedal and to me looks like more a distortion pedal than an overdrive. Bought BB-1x last week. I’m in love. Best overdrive I ever had, and I passed through things like Ibanez TS9b Tube Screamer (terrible pedal), EBS Metal Drive (worst thing I ever experienced in the matter of overdrive pedal), Mojo Mojo (very Good), etc.
I could be wrong, but I believe "Drive" is short for "Overdrive", as they refer to the sound of "Driving" an amp "Over" its headroom. In this case, however, I understand how it may seem strange to compare the two pedals due to the gain difference.
Yet another pedal where Boss add a clean blend control to the BASS version of the pedal and has no clean blend control on the GUITAR version of the pedal. What the actual Fck.
Honesty!! It sounds like FARTHING GRANDPA!!!It really FARTHS! Unless it needs to achive a kind of ''woody'' sound...but who is gonna like it??Who??? Darkglass fans??? I dont think so... ODB- 3 is more aggresive, even it still not a proper bass overdrive...rather than a mushy distortion...
That pedal sucks. I 'm glad I found this video so I know not to buy it. Leave it up to a guitar pedal company to make bass FX. DARKGALASS and TECH21!!!!!!!!!

The best bass pedal review on the web. As an owner of the OBD-3, I hear the difference in punch and mid-range the BB-1X has over the OBD-3.
Jorge Tristan Melendreras Thank you Jorge, It's a much more subtle pedal, I like liked it a lot.
+NevadaMusicUK so BB1x or MXR M89 bass overdrive ?
there it is the question !

Aftershock.
odb-3 will always have a special place in my heart

@@pCeLobster Dude I just tried this and it sounds great! To be fair I also like the fuzzier settings too

BB-1x is the beast, initially I didn't get this pedal but now I use only this overdrive. I even sold my Darkglass Vintage microtubes and B3K pedals ))
That's exactly the way as a bass preamp has to sound! Very organic sound in comparison with the other. Awesome pedal. Mine, it's already on the road to me!
Very good comparison.

Cada pedal é um salário mínimo ou mais. 😥😥
Thanks for sliding a little J. J. Burnel in there. Good stuff.
It doesn't really have to do with how the pedal sounds , but I feel that the BB-1X looks a lot better than the ODB-3.
for sure LOL sadly irrelevant though in terms of value
Andrew Sprague i really like the yellow, might just be me tho
I like the yellow

The ODB-3 is an unruly beast, I keep the balance knob just a hair off of the "dry" position and that's crunchy enough for me LOL
Awesome review BTW

Buzz Osborne from Melvins uses the yellow one, if i remember
Try also the ODB 3 on Guitar. Its a Beast Fuzz with a touch of vintage. Obviously al the controls at maximum.
Daft question - if you were gonna use it as a DI, doesn't that mean it'll have go go right at the end of your signal chain?
Excellent demo, love it.
I use the BB-1X mostly for guitar , it sounds great ! But for bass i prefer Ampeg Scrambler which has amazing sounding mids !
On guitar? What for?
@@almostliterally593for stoner and sometimes for grindcore :)
good review but I can make the ODB-3 sound very close to the bass driver by changing the settings to the classic fuzz setting.
I find them both pretty usable, although I prefer the BB-1X over the ODB-3, I would use them both at the same time and use the BB-1X in order to warm the signal and push the ODB-3 to new sounds... that would surely give you some better and more usable sounds out of the Bass Overdrive....
I needed that so much. Thank you.
Great DEMO!!!
Thanks, I'm always looking for that fat, bass amp type sound, and this does a great job without being too over the top. It's on my wish list...

Im last used it,.but ODB3 stil the best
Why doesn't the BB-1x have the 4 bass strings on it?? D:

GREAT review! Thanks!
Just got the bb-1x. It has a nice sound but I find it’s all or nothing. I can’t hear any difference until it’s cranked all the way.
Thank You. This was an excellent review.
Thanks great demo
Thx! You help me alot, GJ!.
Cheers from Chile!
Hi, may i know what's the song in the intro?
wonder what it would sound like with compression.
Distortion is its own form of compression, so it's not hugely vital with a distorted tone... BUT, get your threshold and release right and it would sound even more epic!
Can you use two BB1X at the, same, time? One with clean setting, and one with distrortion
Would love to see this pedal being A/B'ed with B3K by DarkGlass... :D
D3ft0ne ...and the vintage microtubes, please
classic, elitists comparing darkglass to boss, clever.
Apples and oranges man
Thank you for the comparison and helping me decide - The BB-1x is suited more for my needs/desires. Besides, I'd probably buy the 1x regardless just for the improvement in color over the yellow puke tone of the obd3 blaaa! lol
A lot more people would like the ODB-3 if they thought of it as a fuzz instead of an overdrive
Didn't even try to have the settings close to similar for the comparison. Not a very good demo.
Honestly is abour styles, BB1X is better for classic rock and the OVD3 is for extreme music. Simple
I agree, thanks!
Couldn't you plug this into a external mixer to have a stereo type sound like Yes
God Gave Records 'N' Tapes to you no. The outs are a output and a line out (to hot for a mixer. I have one bb1x)
where would i put this in my chain?
At the end

How did they get Tony Iommi to do the voiceover for this?!?🤣
This bloke is a cockney. Tony is a Brummie. Very different accents mate.
Why would you compare a drive pedal to an overdrive pedal?
I could be wrong, but I believe "Drive" is short for "Overdrive", as they refer to the sound of "Driving" an amp "Over" its headroom.

bass driver bb1x really sucks i will keep my boss odb3

Couldn't you put a new set of strings before doing this? The tones sound like crap, in my opinion.

change the strings before recording a demo please
Not everyone likes the obnoxiously bright tone you do. I'm here to hear the pedal, not horrible fret noise
