I'll take educational sponsored videos like this any day. You did a great job fitting the key info into a video, including general background info, specifics, and your own experiences. I've paint corrected, wrapped, ceramic coated, plasti-dipped, and PPF'd cars, but my family still doesn't understand it when i educate them on their options. I'll show my father Alanis' video, I'm sure the concept will sink in better with how she explained it.
Thank you so much! They did a beautiful job, and we wanted to make sure we talked about PPF realistically (pros, cons, what to actually expect). That was part of our deal from the start. Thank you for watching. I hope it was helpful 💜
I have to agree! Excellent job covering a wide amount of information in a digestible and relatable way. Plus you integrated a lot of the things that make Xpel stand out as a supplier of ppf, ceramic coating and care products. Kudos!
Thanks for the thoughtful treatment of the subject! You wouldn't think PPF would be something to argue about on the Internet. I enjoyed that you gave a glimpse into the fact that everyone's job is more complicated than it looks from the outside.
I don’t know how I feel about PPF. On one hand I want my car to stay new but on the other imperfections add character. Cars are meant to experience the world, not sit in garages watching the world go by. But who doesn’t like a pretty car? But sometimes you gotta get dirt under your nails! I don’t know. I appreciate the insight into the process, another great video!
This is such a good mindset! I like it. I love having a car that’s seen the world and still looks showroom new, but I love the idea of adding character
I installed PPF on my rocker panels to prevent rock chips since I drive on gravel often. The example you showed with the 'gravelometer' is 100% accurate! I had many little rock chips I had to fill in with touch up paint, but now the PPF has kept that area looking perfect!
My 2024 Mazda 3 sedan is painted deep crystal blue mica and the edge of the driver's door started chipping a week after I got the car. I know PPF won't fix that, but I've been considering getting PPF on the whole car. Your video has nudged me closer to that decision. Thanks for another educational and informative video, Alanis!
Awww David! Thank you for watching! You can also get that door paint corrected if you want to - since the car is so new, you won’t have fading of the color yet, and it would be easy to match!

Well done--a very cool blend of a documentary about PPF and an infomercial (hope you don't take offense at the term). It was fun to watch and I learned a lot I didn't know!
Hahahaha no offense taken! It's important to disclose when you have relationships with companies, and it means the world to me that you watched and enjoyed the video
So basically, PPF is kinda like what a screen protector is to a phone. It can be a little tedious to apply, but you definitely want to make sure there's nothing on your car before application, and like most screen protectors out there, it won't make your car bulletproof. This is actually some very helpful info for me who had absolutely NO idea what this was, but definitely something to apply to my first car coming soon! Great job, Alanis! And once again, congrats on the channel sponsor!!!
The video starts like a hostage situation “Wouldn’t it be a shame if these rocks hit your car” 😂 I want PPF for my Focus RS since I drive over a thousand miles a month, but it’s like what I went through when buying window tint where I am spending forever trying to find a place I trust will do the job right at a decent price. By the way, the video was a great BTS of the hard and careful work that goes into PPF installation. The seams are so well hidden, I’d be giddy too! Also, that’s a beautiful Miata.
I am curious how ppf would react on really hot days. Obviously you can repair small scratches by applying heat like you showed, but where I live it can get to about 110 degrees F in the summer time 🥵. Seems like it wouldn't last as long in that environment but idk 🤷
Same here! The self-healing will happen on hot days like that, too. When they’re testing the PPF in that weather machine, it’s simulating all kinds of harsh weather! Tons of companies do really harsh stress testing like that. I think it’s fascinating

Wow, sounds like a great experience at Camp XPEL! I have DIY'ed PPF installs on several of my cars, and it's not too bad on panels with simple shapes (Honda S2000 hood comes to mind, that was an easy one). But cars with complex panel shapes are a real challenge and I would punt those jobs to a pro, no question. I remember trying to install on an Acura RDX that had strakes stamped in the hood, and it required tacking the middle down and then working outward to the edges, stretching the film up and over the strakes to meet the panel edge. Totally nuts. Came out OK in the end but it sure put up a fight and I would not want to tangle with that again. Now that I am into collector cars, a common problem I run into is aged PPF that went well past its lifetime and became brittle. It can be a bear to remove without damaging the paint, and is super tedious work. Ballpark, we figure $1-2K of labor to remove aging PPF from a collector car and that's usually an impact on the car's valuation. If you care about your car and want to maintain it's value, don't let the PPF go past its usable life! PPF is great until it ages out and changes from something that protects and enhances the car to something that detracts from appearance and value. Thanks for the great video!

Hi Alanis! Really love your videos! And this one really is informative and gave us all an idea on how important PPF really is 😊 can I also ask what’s the difference between PPF and Ceramic Coating? Would really love to know the difference and benefits of both. Thanks and more power to you and your channel! 🥳
Thank you so much for watching! Totally. PPF is the thick, protective film you see in this video. It will protect your car from surface scratches, rock chips, etc. Ceramic coating is hydrophobic and used to shine your car up/make it easier to wash/make it prettier. It's like a thin glass surface on the body of your car
You said the PPF on your car is a custom job. I'm betting their database has the PPF for a Miata and they could just have their computer cut pieces to fit your car. What is the advantage of going the route you did? Awesome video!! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Hello! I'm the installer. I'll try to keep it short but basically the film and patterns from when this car was new are drastically different. We did have minimal patterns for it but they wouldnt be as good as the patterns of today. I had to do custom so I could sleep at night😂 what I installed is basically what you can expect from a 2018+ pattern from XPEL.
Really depends on where you get it done. Some folks pay $10,000 for a full-car custom job, but that's a big job and cut by hand instead of a machine. You can see prices of kit pieces online (without labor) to get an idea of what a person, not an installer, would pay for each piece of the kid. For XPEL specifically, just pop the car model and year in here: www.xpel.com/paint-protection-kits/US--AND--Canada/Passenger-Cars--AND--Light-Trucks/2004/Mazda/Miata/MAZDASPEED
Depends on the car and if you’re looking for matte or color change, as well as your market area. In my area, a front end job by a good installer should be at least $2000 for clear gloss film. Full body jobs can be upwards of $6000 for clear gloss. Matte or color conversions will bump it up to the price point Alanis mentioned
Oh god, I hope vinyl car bras NEVER make a come back. They were so ugly! Is an awesome idea kudos to the people installing that on cars but at least for me is equally or more expensive than repainting the car. At the end need to be done anyway but hey to each their own.
That’s totally fair! I think for me, the joy of PPF is that it’s like my phone case. I feel less stress when I’m on the highway because of it, and also, I get to have a pretty paint job the whole time instead of redoing it. Thanks for watching 🤠
Every time I see a Miata, I get jealous because I cannot comfortably drive one. Mazda simply didn't build these cars for humans of my dimensions 😢😭
When you PPF costs more than your car. Was quoted 1500$ just for a front bumper on my new car. 8 grand for the whole car... Called up my local paint shop for a quote for a full repaint. 5500$. Yeah no thanks. That's just my opinion.
That’s totally fair! PPF is a big purchase, like how I bought the 1TB iPhone Pro while my husband has a five-year-old phone that could be a burner. It depends on what you’re using the product for and your budget
@@AlanisKing I also asked for an explanation, they said that some of the body work is now so complete that it takes a long time to install, it was 2000$ for the front bumper alone because of the stupid grill!
Sorry, I've been triggered by a paid ad calling itself the truth. I was hoping for more of a pros and cons, but just got paid ad. So, here's some more truth: 1. It is crazy expensive. Enough that virtually zero Miatas are deemed to be worth the extra expense. Any car that is not an exotic that does get PPF, usually only gets the front facing surfaces done. 2. It does not last. Ten years is a big stretch. And it is also expensive to remove. 3. There is no guarantee that it will stop rock chips. When you do get a rock chip, the PPF will likely blister - making the car look much worse. And the whole section will need to be redone - expensively.
I used to get PPF on a lot of my cars, but it's gotten so expensive that the cost-benefit doesn't work anymore (at least for my use cases.) I'm not going to spend $10K wrapping a $40K car, and I hate the partial PPF jobs. For that money, I'll fix the occasional ding, and eventually respray the car and still have money left over. Unless prices come down (which is tough, because installation quality matters a LOT - you don't want to cheap out) I don't think I'm likely to have anything PPF wrapped anytime soon.
That’s totally understandable! I find that so often, prices for things we need or love go up, but our salaries don’t go up enough to justify them. Sometimes you have to choose what to keep around
What happens if you get into an accident? Does the entire car have to be redone? Does having the vehicle wrapped add an additional layer of protection against damage on the event of an accident?
I talk about that, but not in huge detail! It depends on the intensity of the crash. If you have very light scrapes in a parking lot, it’s possible that the PPF saves the car and you can just put new PPF on (it’s really thick). If the crash is heavy, you’d replace the PPF like body panels. Since there are pieces, like panels, you could replace only the parts of the car that are damaged. I recommend getting documentation of the cost of the job, that way, in the event of a crash, you can submit it as part of the car value to the insurance
Big fan of this episode. I also have Xpel on my entire car. With that said, what’s a fair price for full car PPF? I already have it installed but curious if I was paying fair value. Also roller coaster 🎢 😂
Roller coaster! Really depends on if you're getting a custom job of a kit job, and the prices vary. I couldn't tell you exact prices for things, because I haven't gotten them priced out for different cars. (Also kit jobs versus custom... custom is more.) If you know someone with a big car collection, they could probably give you a bunch of estimates

(The new PPF tech is REALLY good though, so there’s that)
@ Tech has improved for sure. Cost increase isn’t so much on the film, but qualified labor.
Full car like my C8 Corvette would be close to 10,000. I paid 6500 for full front, rockers, mirrors, roof edge and ceramic coating.
@@Weyco23 thanks… I paid roughly same amount as you then
@@AlanisKing no worries… was just curious. Like I said, I already had it down so it doesn’t really matter but was just wondering.
