It is what it is. I’m in Dallas, and summer here is ugly. You know going in that your times are going to be slower. Forget PR’s and stop being a slave to your watch. Concentrate on form and effort and less on time. Running in the heat doesn’t have to suck? Sorry, it just does, and you have to learn to live with it. The trick is to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Embrace the suck.
If you sweat a lot, like me, wet your shirt with room temp water. It doesn't need to be dripping wet. It helps the body core temp stay lower for the first 10-15 minutes.
@@jimmystetler2572 no hats yet, just cut my hair and run at 7AM-10 am to try to beat the heat. My laundry room and bathroom smell like a sirty locker room again now. I come home from a run wetter than from a swimming pool lol.
Hahahahaha, Totally relate . I’m in Miami and it’s always the same thing around mid July - August. We say this year is hotter than last... Definitely need to hydrate well during the day ( shy of 1 gallon for me ) and yeah definitely gotta got real early or 7:00 pm since we have some daylight till 8:ish
Former Tamponian and remember pushing out of bed at 3am for a couple hours run. Anything after 6am and between the heat, humidity, and the carbon monoxide from everyone driving to work I hated running in that.
The hat tip is a good one with a caveat. Hats keep a lot of heat in, so if you can get a hat that's primarily mesh, like the adidas 5-panel running hat or the patagonia duckbill cap you're going to be able to block the sun and stay a lot cooler.
@@paddywiggle Wow thanks for the tip!!! all day preparing just for next morning,, wow thats very good, i always thought to drink just like 30minute before,, I know theres something wrong with what im doing, high amount water in short time,,
Always think ahead. Too many people are caught up in the hour or two before. If you do full on routine changes through the day your body is much better suited. Example, last weekend I did 20 at 6:45 pace in 78 degrees STL hunidity, no water stops during, no nutrition before or during. Hydrating and fueling properly everyday regardless of efforts puts you in a much more prepared state. I know it's against the norm but I drink a 500mL bottle of water right before bed every night. Don't be afraid to go against what the norm of what the media feeds you.
Ahmad Hasif ..I always remember when doing camping and week long or weekend walks, so easy to underestimate the amount of water needed. Too easy to dehydrate even without heat and strong sun. The same goes for most days. Water intake on a hot sunny day can be like magic in the difference it makes to performance but always best to listen to the body as well.
Yeah, as well aware, it is brutally hot out here in Texas as well. 🔥😕🥵 I tend to run inside during the looooong Summer time here, but nothing beats the sense of achievement than hitting the road outside. Thank you so much for sharing, Coach Holly! Let us keep running no matter what and where. 🙏😉😘❤️👍
Another excellent video. The heat and humidity have impacted me more and more as I've aged. My approach has always been similar to Coach Elizabeth's, but keeping in mind 1 more thing... at some point the burden of the heat and humidity will lift, and I'll be happy with the improved fitness I've gained from enduring all these miserable runs and workouts in the dreaded summertime.
My best tips for running in the heat: use a cap or bandana to block the Sun and also to prevent the sweat from dripping into your eyes, it's super uncomfortable when that happens and may force you to stop regularly to clear it out. Be careful with with the shirt you use, once it's dripping sweat it may rub in some areas; but don't go shirt-less either, you want to protect your skin off the Sun. Bring hidration with you, perferibly with electrolytes, this is very important. Also it's a good idea to bring a gel or two, just in case. As Holly explains, be conservative in your running, slow down couple of notches. Finally try to find routes where you spend as much time as possible in the shade, be caureful because at midday that may prove difficult so run early in the morning or late in the evening, Finally share your location with someone as well as the expected time you should be back. We all think that this won't happen to us that we falter mid-route, but I've seen it happen. Any modern mobile phone has this capability, you can use someting as simple as WhatsApp if you're unsure about what to use.
This is very helpful.. I live in west palm beach running in 86 degree heat.. I run at 8 pm at this time of the year..sun is down and a little cooler.. thank you
Charleston SC runner. Run/walk is my friend during the summer. Average 5am temperature is 80 with 100% humidity. The Strava app says feels like 90 and it is right
In Florida it is so humid, hot, and annoying to run lol BUT I have been doing it around 7:30PM. Sometimes it’s so hard to even breathe 🤣 but this was so helpful! I’ve been trying to improve my pace because I do want to go faster, but I think sometimes it’s true just flow at your own pace and focus not so much on the time. Thank you so so much for this video, this channel has helped me throughout my weight loss journey and learning how to run since I’m a beginner. Thanks guys!
Thank you! Sure wish I saw this before last week's 1.5 hour run (90 degrees when I started and 99 when I ended). However, today it is 116 degrees and the lowest temperature before my run tomorrow is 89 degrees with 40% humidity at 6 a.m. ( Phoenix). I will be implementing many of these tips for this run. Thanks again!
Kentucky runner here .... heat index the other day was 109 !!! I’ve started getting up at 4:45, to “beat the heat”. But fall is right around the corner :-) - Thanks Coach !!!
I've been running in the heat/humidity in New Jersey and it is definitely a challenge. I have been using my MAF number to run in the heat. It helps me keep my exertion to about a 5/10. I seem to have a little trouble with just pacing myself. I really want to implement these practices that you mentioned because I feel it is important to understand my body more when I run. Thanks so much for the tips!!
If we get to have it this year check out the Tennessee State Park Running Tour. Starts in October goes to the first weekend in March. Hits up 20 state parks and is a great time.
If you want to monitor you hydration level, weigh yourself before and after the run. The difference in weight is amount of fluid lost, so that's how much you need to replace plus a little extra for the continued sweating.
Welcome to Nashville! It is a very active community (pre-Covid) so there is so much to do to live an active lifestyle. I moved to Nashville from Florida, so the heat and humidity is the "norm" but love your tips. I am just getting back into running and I'm a lot older, heavier, and well...just slower LOL The lighter I can travel during a run is best.
Several toasty hot days a year here then the rest of summer much less challenging. My thing for the hottest days, Pre Wetted running hat or wet hair Personally I don’t wear sun glasses but the running cap does me proud. Small container of water.. sometimes with squirt of fresh lemon, Makes a big difference having a wet mouth even if not thirsty. Slow the pace to something fitting.. feel yourself settle into the heat. Sometimes the heat feels relaxing, meditative... And then the weather changes and it’s back to regular weather 😋
Forgot to add sun lotion if running on uv high days but avoiding putting it on the top half of face - it’s a bugger when lotion skin sweats and gets in the eyes- again, a running cap is essential.
Rookie (referring to heat/humidity)! 😁 Holly, you'll get use to the heat/humidity over time. It took me about 45 years, so be patient! 😉 I have to be out and running by 0500, well before the sun, but the downside is that the humidity is highest at that time of morning. The rest is exactly like you said hydration and electrolytes!! And also to not comparing your cooler weather runs to this time of year, which can be disheartening! Great tips!
I am very warm blooded by nature. Get temp above mid 70's and it's not good for me. Hot GA months can be 74 degrees and 100% humidity even at 5 in the morning! I like running in colder weather but I am a distance runner 12 mile minimum and up at a time. People can usually do 2 or 3 miles in heat but when you get older doesn't work well for distance. Look forward to the colder months as you heat up as you run but typically not overheat.
Definitely find some shade when running in the heat. These are some good tips! Thanks Holly! You can also build your tolerance to the heat. Gradually building your exposure to the heat each day will help you be able to run in the heat.

Hi Coach Holly, do we need to run with mask on? Do you have any suggestions? And If mask is required, how to run?
I don’t think you’ll get a clear answer on if you need to wear a mask. In the US, there isn’t any official laws or mandates on wearing a mask in public streets. Try wearing a buff or mask around your neck and pull it up when you pass others. Or, if safe, move away from others such as stepping off the curb to social distance while passing. You could also wear a mask around your mouth but not nose as I see some people do that. Lastly, try running in secluded areas or at times where it is less crowded
