Holy shit!!! i looked away for five seconds and this thing hit 1k views???? i wanted to come type some eloquent thank you message but i am SO bad at words oh my god. thank you guys so much!!
here 8 months later at 13k views i rrly liked this
I remember writing a complete story for once. Yeah that little short story went from 3 pages to 16 pages quick. And that's me when I restrict my story expanding brain.🙃🧀
Pro tip: if you can cut out barriers preventing you from starting your webcomic, do it. Not to say prep work is bad (it's easy to go too far in the other direction where you wing it and you realize part way through you don't know what you're doing), but try not to use prep work as a means to procrastinate. If you are in an endless loop of making model sheets for a comic you are making by yourself, it is time for an intervention.
^^^ LITERALLY THIS!!! youre never gonna be 100% ready to start so dont get caught up doing prep! sometimes you gotta take that leap of faith
"Comics are an observation in artistic evolution." This part omg. Recognizing that your next piece, panel, or page is always going to be better than your last because you're constantly growing and changing as an artist. Super well said. :)
I'm currently in the process of figuring... everything... out. I did about 14 pages as an initial, no stakes go at it and learned a lot. I stopped because... I'm not in any way a pantser, it turns out, so now I'm back to actually figuring out the story and characters rather than just having a vague idea and direction! Learned a lot and it was super fun, so I definitely wanna get this story out of my head and out into the wild!
A point I think that sums up this whole video is that if you love it, then others will love it too
I have been working on my Webcomic The Rusty Owl for a few months now, I initially dived in head first with little to no preproduction or understanding of wtf I'm doing, so I decided after about 11 pages and some major burnout to completely reboot my comic with the currently made pages planned to go into a Beta Page on my site. The current concept is a scifi story with an ex-cop bounty Hunter and her transfem mad scientist wife travelling the galaxy doing odd jobs with the help of their sentient chef robot son, their Rabbit Alien Prince Pilot, and their transfem Mechanic who can make portals, they go around shooting bad people and taking down the police at every turn possible
…Do you plan to post this? Where? It sounds so fun!
@@Blackplaaague when I get past all the prep work and finish a few pages yes
Thank you! I've been dreaming about making a webcomic for years, but I've never dared to take that dream seriously. Maybe finally, I would dare to show others the squirrel dog world I made myself.
If you are making low poly assets, I think block bench could be a quicker way than blender. Whichever one you feel more comfy with.
I feel like an older sib just sat me down and gave me a speech about life /pos. This is what I needed to hear to start finalizing designs on my comic
Great to hear those tips. I'm currently working on my passion comic "Zeki" and after approx 55 pages that I made, it's amazing to hear those encouraging words of yours. Thank you!☺ ❤
i've literally had aspiring dreams to be a comic artist since itty bitty me. this was so so helpful and i'm so excited to start working on CenterStage. I have a few friends who are invested in this story already and its so awesome to think about OTHER PEOPLE enjoying my little brainchild. I'm already interested in tip the ferryman just from this lil bit and i will definitely be checking it out. First time meeting you because of my dire need for comic advice THANK YOU!!!!!
this encourages me to finally start my webcomic!
"comics are an observation to artistic evolution" i love that! Atm i'm just coming back from a hiatus and rebuilding my buffer and reeling from my inconsistency lol but this is a great reminder :D
I have been working on a webcomic with my close friend but I still found these tips informative! Thank you!
I have a little extra mi i tip...
I get my friends to read my comics... they love it, and its more motivating when I see their lughter from my comics.
I needed this video right now. Really love the mix of practical advice and encouragement. I'm working on my first serious webcomic project now that I hope to launch soonish, after practicing comics for a few years and having a few cancelled projects in the past that I ended up not consistently vibing with or burning out on. I definitely feel a lot better about this one than my previous work because I'm applying lessons I've taken from past failures, and I've matured as a person and writer since previous attempts, but lately I've been hit with the worst insecurity and confidence issues ever. It's strange because this hasn't really been much of an issue with me in the past, and it's been a little demotivating. I think it's definitely a fear of failure and "what if it's bad", even though I *know* it's better than anything I've done before, and I love what I make and I love making it. That should really be all that matters, cause I genuinely think having fun is one of the most important things here. The advice in this video's super healthy and I like the focus on how to make the workflow less stressful and terrifying. "Do it scared" is definitely something I need to internalize more, and that's something that comes through actually practicing it.
(Also I love reading comics so I'll be checking Tip The Ferrymen out most likely!)
This was a great video!! I've always been too nervous to start my webcomic since there were logistical fallacies and plot holes, as well as the anxiety of never having done it before. Also, you have a very nice voice!
Thank you for this video, it was awesome and full of all the things I’ve been needing to hear pertaining to me working on my own webcomic. Tip the Ferrymen sounds pretty cool and this room looks epic! Lovin’ all the little details✌️
“Give yourself permission to suck” is exactly the advice I needed. Thanks for this!
I’m researching and preparing myself to start a webcomic of my Dungeons and Dragons campaign. I really love this homebrew world and the characters are absolutely awesome. I feel like it’s the only way I can really share how excited it all makes me.
that sounds incredible!! please drop the title here once its up, i love dnd!
the screen tones podcast has an episode abt making dnd webcomics it youre still doing research! :]
@@Toonbly Since my party won’t come up with a name, I’m calling it The Exterminators!
We have a habit of going in and clearing out all areas before moving on. Right now our greatest threats are Heshyrians, a race of vampire people who are seeking control of world governments.
Stay tuned for high seas adventures and shenanigans!
I plan on starting my own webcomic as soon as I have the funderments of drawing down. I have a small comic in mind 20-30 pages only from all the egg-moments I've had, that I can remember. It already terifies me, even thinking about making it, as it'll be very personal, but at the same time I am super excited and it's my main motivation to learn how to draw, to just create it. It would be less frightening if no one read it, and I just created it for myself, but if a handful people find it relatable and/or even helpful I'd be absolutly elated.
(As for learning the fundaments: I am giving myself a year just to learn and then I will send a friend of mine, who can be brutally honest a sample to give me an outside perspective whether or not it is presentable. Not "good" presentable is enough, but if I were to judge myself I would probably never approve ^^")
Oh dang what a good video. Really nailed the ending there. First time viewer and I really enjoyed that. Thanks
I had two webcomics going on that only lasted two pages before I quit. The first one being I didn't know what I was doing, and the second one I based off of the fanfiction I was writing cause I canceled the fanfiction due to losing motivation (there's a chance I'll get the motivation back, but idk). I plan on making another one (this time at least make it last more than two pages), and I also have the whole story in my head this time. The last two were self-insert FNAF crossing over with MLP, but this one will be totally original (and not self-insert either). I'm in the process of writing the script (even though writing isn't my thing). I was originally gonna make this an animated short film, but then realized making it a comic will be a little easier. Hope I complete it!
I'm making my first webcomic ever (and first serious comic attempt ever, as well) and hit a rough patch of not doing updates for a few months. I'm hopping back in the wagon recently and hoping to chug through and re-develop that habit of having weekly updates again
If anyone wants to hear it, could I give a “lil” description of the comic idea I’m developing to see if people are interested? (TLDR at the bottom cause I said a lot oops)
So the name is High Stakes, and it starts a main cast of 4 characters with their own supernatural origin who have to team together and perform heists to pay back accidentally burning down their dorm. Why heists and not some other job? They’re college students with no experience and also they didn’t read the contract that made them do heists before signing it. So they have to figure out how to break into houses, galleries, museums, etc to steal things back for other supernaturals (mostly) who’ve lived so long some of their belongings are now considered as historical artifacts. The cast is all fem/enby (cause I’m kinda self indulgent and don’t like designing male characters that much lol) and LGBTQ. There’s Millie, the main character, an anxious vampire studying fashion and working at her aunt’s (also a vampire) many businesses, Atlas, a tech-savvy werewolf with no concept of screen time, Delaney, a seemingly sheltered, rich, completely normal girl, and Kit, the ghost haunting their replacement house with whom they made a deal to help them pay off their loan in exchange for giving the house back once the group moves out after school. There’s also Margot, a human criminology major that Millie has a crush on, who is intent on hunting down the perpetrators of this string of burglaries, completely unaware they’re actually the group of people she keeps bumping into at school.
TLDR; Action/comedic heist comic starring supernatural, neurodivergent, LGBTQ+ characters that has a lot of focus on character relationships (which I intend to be very cute once the slow burn pays off)
Really enjoy this video! There's some really positive and uplifting advice here. Adjusting a mindset to something positive like youve shown here is really cool
It's easy to fall into the trap of trying to make a project for other people, or to worry about the quality of your work.
Your discipline and willingness to dive into creating and share this advice is so so cool. Thanks so much!
Thanks for the tips! It makes me feel more comfortable now..😂 I really wanna make webcomic like 19days but gl, even thou I’ll just feel bad if it turns out trash, but this video make me feel otherwise. I’ll come back and watch it again when I feel down!
I’m saving for CSP and a drawing tablet!!! It’ll take a while, so In the meantime I’m writing the entire script (rough draft at least) from top to bottom like a novel lol
CSP is honestly amazing once you get to figuring it out. I'm super duper picky about my art programs but CSP has literally never failed me before. Just get the PC version and not the mobile version bc the mobile version is so incredibly hard to use.
Also DO NOT get a picasso art tablet. It's a regular andriod tablet with art programs. Its advertised way differently and it's so slow it takes forever to even open a page. I hope you do your research and find a nice drawing tablet! I think webtoons has an offer on CSP for a discounted price. Ebay has cheaper art tablets, good luck!
This video made me feel so welcomed and inspired to do what I've been dreaming to do, thank you.
When I was a child, I would almost always draw and write about “Isaac and the Monsters”, which was basically about my younger self socializing with monsters, kinda’ like Disney/Pixar’s Monsters Inc, mixed with Godzilla or the Classic Universal Monsters, etc. Now that I’m an adult, I’m trying to create a webcomic, which I’m calling “Ike and the Cosmic Maidens” for now.
With the title in mind, all I did was replace “Isaac” with “Ike”, replace “Monsters” with “Maidens”, and add in the adjective “Cosmic”.
I figured “Ike and the Cosmic Monsters” sounds too similar to a Lovecraftian Horror Story, so “Ike and the Cosmic Maidens” sounds more accurate to what it actually is: a harem story with alien girls set in space, kinda’ like the anime Tenchi Muyo. Although my female characters are meant to be slightly more imaginative, kinda’ like the various alien species from Ben 10 for example.
Does that make sense?
I've been working on a Webcomic about a a Superhero who grieves the loss of his lover by Crimefighting as a Vigilante. He stops Crime but he goes too far and kills the victims.
Some webcomic recommendations I have are Da Yomanville Gang, Señorita Cometa, Dinosaur Bones, Axed, Straylight Tiger, and a new one called World in the Waves. I’m also working on a webcomic I hope to publish later this year called The Chimera Galaxy, with trailer comics out already
I'm making a wedtoon soon called magic stars but I might change the name. It's coming at some point in December (ill put it when i fix it)
oo i’d love to check it out when you release it :D
Unrelated but is THAT A MOTHMAN PLUSH?!?!?!?! MOTHMAN MENTIONED?!?!?!?
my favorite story right now is called “Vertigo’s Fun Land” Caution!! it tackles heavy themes i can’t mention on youtube. The artist and writer for the comic is called “Mutatedeye” they sometimes draw nsfw on their twitter so just be warned of that. 18+ only!!
i won’t spoil the story much but it involves the backrooms and Clowns!! it’s got an incredible dream-like world and the art is just so BEAUTIFUL!!!
The fixed publishing date is great. You are just forced to move on instead of fiddeling with little things. Also you are forced to work on your comic regually.
"you have to do it scared"
Ah
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the video! I really love your voice! :)
LOL you sound so much like Matpat from Game Theory, I got surprised
"You don't want to be spend 5 hours drawing one character in one panel of one page" me fr
gosh I needed this
Bro that shit came straight from the heart and i felt it

Would be better if it spent less time defending reference, custom brushes and 3D models. My brother used to be one of those goofs who'd call the burn and blur tools cheating, but I ain't thought about it in ages 😂
This video re motivated me thank you for this!
I am inspired by chainsaw man. Thanks for this
Some of these tips can apply to my yt channel wow

Uhm I tried to put the 800x4096 canvas size but it didn’t let me did I do something wrong??
you mode me went to make my webtoon new thak you
Thansk
Can we draw our comics on Bristol board and then take pictures of the panel and upload it instead of drawing it digitally?
You can do whatever you want forever!
hello! technical question about the art you were making, how did you color everything in at 8:00 when your selection looked different?
its a custom brush on the clip studio paint asset store! it lets you fill in an area just by circling it. its free if you have csp!! the ID # for it is 1759448
is that benrey
@@hexagowe3415 LMAO YEAH i was waiting for someone to notice him
ive noticed you built your webcomic (which looks great btw) with rarebit, I was wondering one thing about rarebit and its updating pages,
whenever I add new pages onto my webcomic the site wont update with the new pages unless i clear cookies on my site, this is worrying especially if your trying keep a consistant schedule, and not everyone would know to "clear cookies to see the new pages." do you know any trick to this?
Oh thats just a thing witb your browser! the website still updates, it just takes a second for your browswr to load it in if you dont clear out the cache.
you did +100 pages for over a year as a 14yo???????!!!!!!!???!?!?!?!?‽
I did like, one
LOL to be fair I was closer to 15/16 once I got around 100 pages into that comic, I blame it entirely on audhd hyperfocus HFDJFSKF
@@Toonbly me too buddy, me too 😅
happy this is the first video that came up, very much needed
Starting a webtoon is such a humbling experience for an overachiever and perfectionist 🥲
