Good information! I’ve just come home from property tours just north of you. The ozarks are beautiful; “mountains with less snow, warmer temps, and more water.”

Hey Devil Dog. (fellow Marine here) I just moved my father from Minnesota to Mountain Home. He actually closes tomorrow. We plan on moving to that area between now and next spring. We are in a very similar situation as it seems you were in. We moved from Las Vegas to Grand Island, NE in 2019 after my wife retired. The thought was to be close to my father to help him and his wife out in their old age. In short - - - my father got divorced a couple years later he move to the middle of MN. His new life took him 8 hours away from me and 3.5 hours away from my older brother. Two years after that, my dad broke a hip cutting down a tree. This proved why having family close was nice. My dad heard we were looking to move to the Ozarks next spring and jumped at the idea of being close to family again. LOL We are looking to be no more than an hour away from where my father is in MH. This puts us looking in the same area you all were looking. Also, we are of the same mindset that you seem to be when it comes to prepping. If you see or hear of some ideal property for sale, keep us in mind. Semper Fi, Scott and Dora Wolfe
Semper Fi, Scott and Dora! We're excited for you and hope you find your little slice of heaven in the Ozarks. I’ll keep my eye out for any properties. Any must haves? Acreage minimums? Thanks!
We wanted in the country, wanted to get out of the busy city. We looked and looked and I stayed up late looking online. Some of the places we looked at was horrible. We was about to give up when we came across this house and 5 arces I could see it from the long driveway and line with pine-tree and beautiful mountains in the back and I said I want it. We made the deal the next day. We just love it here so peaceful and we have great neighbors. I'm retiring soon to spend more time enjoying our home. To me this is my vacation
We have a cabin in Jasper. It's under contract right now to be sold. We're going to build another cabin on property we still own there when life slows down. The first place you looked at sounds like it was out at Erbie.
Looks like lots of new cabin builds in Jasper right now too. But lots of old properties too. It may be the one by Erbie but I"m not sure as I can't get google maps to work now and one property was in marble falls.

I live in the Bentonville Arkansas area. I want to do this so bad. Prices around me are crazy though. Oh and ps. My wife is from WA. You can see Mt Rainer from her mom's house. Crazy
Sadly this is happening everywhere. Prices are rising high in rural areas relative to what the locals are used to. It's causing all kinds of problems. What city people think is cheap in rural areas is actually high historically (locals can't afford to live in Montana anymore). Heck I can't afford to move back to my old area anymore. Wife and I (both retired) moved to the Ozarks seven years ago, actually inside the green box you show at 4:35. Sounds like you got a good location in a really good area. Here are a few bits of friendly advice, some of which are just common sense but still worth repeating since this is a rather old fashioned area. 1) Make yourself into a good neighbor. Introduce yourself. If you have any special skills let them know. 2) VERY IMPORTANT! Explain that you are grateful to be there and that you DON'T want to change how they do things! (We moved from Florida because so many people came from out of state and brought their bad habits with them.) 3) Watch your language. You might get away with a "hell" or a "damn" among close friends, but never cuss when women are around. 4) Meeting people is serious business. Shake hands, look them in the eyes. Don't giggle or grin too much. 5) This is still a very religious culture. If you can do so without offending your own set of ethics, attend a local church. You don't have to join as a member, but even if you just sit quiet and listen you will end up with a lot of very valuable information and friendships in the community. Moving to the Ozarks is not as big a change as moving to Peru or Panama --- but it really is a much more traditional culture than most of the rest of the US. Those traditions are exactly why the area has remained desirable while so many other places are becoming unlivable. PLEASE, respect the people, and respect their beliefs. YOU need to adapt to THEM, not vice versa. And by the way, you might be surprised to find out how many over-all wearing people you meet have Masters degrees or Doctorates, and even the ones who don't have read deeply in different subjects. Best of luck in your new home! You made a great choice.
So cool that you are in the green box we chose too! thanks for the advice (I know it all too well). I have lived in many places including the south before (due to military) and even the same holds true in our old place in Wisconsin. All the Illinois people wanted to come to Wisconsin and then change it to be more like where they came from. I am actually planning on making a video on this as it's such a bad thing. I do have to watch the cussing as it's a horrible habit from the military I have been trying to break. I am good about it in public but not so much by myself. I am religious but have some issues about church ( I do need to find the right one) and have not gone in way too long. I do ever judge a book by it's cover. All self made millionairs that I have met are the very basic dressed kind of folk that you would never know. Thanks again for such great advice!
I love Arkansas! I've only vistited a couple of times briefly. I'd love to live there. I've been wondering what's the main differences between the Ozarks in the north, and Ouachitas Mid-Southwest areas, as far as nature/scenery/water/fishing, people, economy, etc.? They both have mountains, trees, water, and very pretty.
Good question! I was told the Ouachitas are characterized by ridges and valleys oriented generally an east-west direction, while the Ozarks are characterized by flat-topped plateaus. I plan on going to The Ouachitas to hike and off-road. The main reason I did not move there was the drive from the old place was already 10hrs and I did not want to add a few more. Now that I am here I want to explore them.
I'm interested in hearing about the vitamin B elixir, the bugs and I do not get along. We live on the side of a mountain in a berm house. We can walk out the front door at ground level and out the back door at ground level. Our kitchen and living rooms are built into the mountain side (red clay soil) and indoor temps in those rooms rarely rise above 70 in summer, which helps keep the rest of the house cooler. We have 15 acres here with cows, goats, hogs and farm birds. We also have 40 acres nearby, on a dead end dirt road, at least 3 miles of dirt. In my "perfect" world, we would be living on the 40 and selling or renting out the current place. I'm not sure how your mail is delivered but over here, Grove delivers to one side of the highway and Hasty to the other. I was told that if we want to move our mail box we just have to contact the PO and let them know we are moving it and changing post offices. I don't know how accurate that info is but it was given to me by a PO employee.
Your berm house sounds really cool (no pun intended) You could probably rent it out no problem too. Would you have to build a house on the 40 acres? I'm not sure on the mail. we just started finally getting it. the postal service ap shows a lot of mail that we should be getting but it's slow going
@@HomesteadReliance Yes, we would have to build on the 40 or do a cabin kit or something. I love to build/make stuff so it would be 'fun' for me. My hubby is less enthusiastic.
@@HomesteadReliance Hasty Volunteer Fire Dept has a Chili supper and auction every year to raise money to keep the FD going. This year it's on November 2nd, starts at 6 p.m. I think it's 5 dollars to get in, but I'm not 100% on that. They supply all you can eat chili (and it's Yummy!) as well as cokes/water and dessert. If you have something you'd like to donate, you can bring it along and lay it on one of the tables. It's a fun time.
We moved to AR last year. Make sure you have cell service wherever you decide to buy. We were lucky. The property we bought is near a cell tour. Our daughters I. Laws bought a property that has Little to NO cell coverage at all. It’s like the old days when we stood on one foot with our arm up over our head holding a mouse ear antenna to get tv coverage. She has to drive to a specific location on the property or pay Elon big bucks for his satellite cell coverage. Not a good thing. Remember people in AR are very low quality income and many work 3 jobs each to make it. They have degrees but not in Fast Food, Holler Dollar or Tire Repair. Wasted 4-6 yr. Degrees. Also, Medical Care is iffy at best. Any specialist live I. The city’s. 6 mo . Wait for an appointment even for an establish patient. If you buy property you will be driving into the city for something you need every two-three weeks. Build a supply pantry, you will be gardening, you will be bartering, you will be doing everything your self or not getting it done at all.
We have a cell booster that works pretty good on our roof. From no bars to 3-4 most of the time. I also use WiFi calling since we have great internet (starlink). The booster receiver is in the house. I have to get another for the tiny studio cabin too or just use wifi calling. Yea starlink is not cheap but my wife needs it for work. We do have a supply pantry and only go to town every couple of weeks. We mostly don't leave the property unless to explore the area.
I would highly recommend at least in this area to never buy sight unseen - just so much disconnect what we see online and what we get unperson. I've just purchased a place after looking at so many
why do you folks move here then advertise what a great place it is? move a lot of strangers in and it will end up being just like where you moved from. Arkansas is a great place to live enjoy your stay here but quit telling the whole world about it.
This particular movie (part 1) is about a new life in Rural America (not just Arkansas). Part two is going to go over more in general the good / bad (individual property tax in Arkansas for one), fitting in, not trying to change an area, and accessibility. The good news for people like you is that many will not move here, but some will. Some will thrive and some with try and change it to like where they moved from (happens everywhere especially Montana). BUT Most can't handle being more than an hour from a Starbucks, Target, or won't drive on icky gravel roads that will chip the paint on their fancy car. BUT This is happening across the whole country right now. People are sick of the cities / burbs and want to go to a simple life (Sadly though, most only dream about it ). I think just my issues with bugs and snakes will keep many from moving too! Trust me I want all rural areas to stay the way they are. I would not worry too much though as one major thing that will keep 99% away anyways: There are no jobs in this area (or most rural areas). Go to the midwest and there are more jobs than people willing to work and houses sell in hours or 3 days. Not this area! Thanks for your response
It is at times. Today was cool and not bad. Washington has really good weather in my opinion. Here the fall and winter are great weather. Summers are hot and humid most of the time. You get used to it and some days are two shower days if you are outside all day. On hot humid days I do some work in the early AM and then come in until the evening when it cools down again.
Yes and no, I had zero today. I'm still trying to figure out the bugs and weather here. Most are some kind of other bugs that just fly around my face and I instinctively swat at them.

❤
Thanks!
@@krickette5569 they have those cool new barndominums that are really quick to have put up or Harrison has those cool mini cabins I see all the time!
@@krickette5569 thanks for letting me know. Just sent my subscription check too. It would be nice to go meet them and eat some chili!
We moved to AR last year. Make sure you have cell service wherever you decide to buy. We were lucky. The property we bought is near a cell tour. Our daughters I. Laws bought a property that has
Little to NO cell coverage at all. Degrees. Also, Medical
Care is iffy at best.
Moved here in 75 . tell people how bad they think it is will get the right people here😂
I would highly recommend at least in this area to never buy sight unseen - just so much disconnect what we see online and what we get unperson. I've just purchased a place after looking at so many
so true!
why do you folks move here then advertise what a great place it is? move a lot of strangers in and it will end up being just like where you moved from.
You better get political my friend, because others will
I know, I know...some of the free services at the one parties convention I just could not believe. Thanks and Semper Fi
If I may ask how much did it cost to buy your new homestead?
mid 300's
vitamin v elixir? what is that? i need something for bugs here in florida.
It was some kind of vitamin B elixir. I'm still looking into it and hope to try once I get more info
Is it humid there? I'm from Washington too
It is at times.
@@HomesteadReliance doesn't sound too bad.
@@debbienelson8013 it's really not! Take a vacation to the area and rent a cabin in a warm seasons to get a "feel" for the weather?
Seen the bigfoot yet😊
no but it's probably seen me! :)
I would have like to have seen what they bought somewhere on this long talking video ?
I had an earlier video with our property and people asked how we picked it. Here is the property ruclips.net/video/FMGHxgPwRh8/видео.html
What did you pay for your propert?
mid 300's
You’ve got too many mosquitoes there!
Yes and no, I had zero today. I'm still trying to figure out the bugs and weather here. Most are some kind of other bugs that just fly around my face and I instinctively swat at them.
please share the vitamin d elixir?
I'm still trying to find it
I think it was Vitamin B but I can't find anything on it
