Hello Korbin, Rasika and Tilotama's character move from lovers to sisters so quickly is because; again it has to do with the mindset of people in that time n era. This story is based in 1946-47 partition time. when they didn't know about same gender relationship. It could not make sense for them to live as husband and wife... they realised they were girls and so the only relationship could be of sisters. They would have explored that side had they lived together and spend time together to understand and make sense for them.
Tisca Chopra was seen in Taaren Zameen Par, Aamir Khan's movie about dyslexic child. She plays the boy's mother. She is an amazing actor indeed.
U guys need to watch more Art house films. Start with Irffan's first film. 'Salam Bombay'

I'm so glad you guys watched this epic masterpiece. And I think the ending was spectacular...in line with the theme of gender identity.
I guess because in the time when the movie is set , it was very rare for women to live together as partners .Even if they loved each other romantically because of social stigma and the nature of it being illegal in India, they might have been romantically linked with each other; but on the surface they make it seem like they lived together as friends .
28:36 I feel Tisca Chopra is quite underrated on the channel, as you have seen numerous stuff by her but still don't recognize her by mame as spontaneous as other great actors (Taarr zameen par/Like stars on earth ; short films : Chutney, Churi, Rubaru).
Don’t forget these are the same guys who hardly mentioned Pankaj Kapoor in Maqbool!!

we Indians are just used to it man.. certification boards are all opinionated. They made director's remove scenes from many brilliant movies.
I always feel sad that you have watched so much stuff by Tisca Chopra and everytime loved her(as she's spot on every time like acting legends like Irrfan) but still you don't recognize her and by name as spontaneous as other great actors (movie : Taare zameen par/Like stars on earth ; short films : Chutney & Churi)
I don't think they have seen Rubaru. That was Jaby Koay. But, other than that, I agree.

The character umber singh haunted me for a week after watching the movie
The movie had no backers from India. Which is why it had a couple of German producers under a French company. It was released in Europe as a French movie in Punjabi. The original won a slew of European and Canadian awards when India decided it would allow it if the nudity was taken out. The original doesn't blur it out. India took two years to make it available.
I will again request to watch film BULBUL....it's mesmorising in every way...
One of my most favourite moments in the film was when Kanwar spots "his" mom bathing. He doesn't know what he's feeling, but we have some idea because we know he's a she actually. The child actor did a great job. Also when Tisca Chopra tells tilottama to leave after---------

---------- she kills Irfan, the inner conflict within the mother is marvelously conveyed by Tisca. The myriad emotions. Just the way circumstances can shape your conception of your own identity, sexuality and outlook is brilliantly portrayed.
Oh and BTW 20:08 Anupama Chopra would be jealous.
I think Rick is spot on here. That's the point. The whole supernatural realm blended seamlessly into ground reality and it serves a purpose cinematically, story wise and metaphorically. It's not just there for no reason. And this element of unreality made me fall in love with the film. It's what adds to the haunting nature of this beautiful masterpiece. And yes, I pulled my hair out when they blurred that scene. I watched it on TV years ago so I thought maybe it was the telecasting but if that's the movie itself then it's robbing a lot of people incl. the audience of a lot of things. Anup Singh does this a lot. His second film with Irrfan in 2017 The Song Of Scorpions also builds around surrealism and supernatural themes for storytelling.

And I totally agree with you Korbin -- no matter how negative or skewed the character Irrfan plays, you can't help but sympathise with him.
You can't help but sympathize with him in Hasil, in Maqbool, in Pratha, in Bypass, in Road to Laddakh, The Killer, Songs of Scorpio or 7 Khoon Maaf.
I think its just his pure soul that shines through. Such a beautiful man!!💕💕💕
Indian movie rating only has 3 categories. U which is universal(for all people), A is adult (for people above 18 years), UA is for in between, equivalent to PG13. If nudity ir excess violence is there in a movie, the rating given is A. But usually producers opt to reduce the iffy things so that they can get an UA rating which gives them access to a wider family audience. However the rating board tends to cross its mandate by asking for cuts because in their opinion it might cause a law and order problem. In such cases the producers have no option except to go to court and get those conditions removed or reduced. Since thats a time taking process producers tend to take the easier way of appeasing the censor board and negotiate via media solutions like blurring etc.

Must watch Pinjar movie. Manoj bajpayee and urmila mantondkar played just an amazing performance. You will get to know what peoples suffered in 1947 dividation of india and Pakistan. Punjab suffered alot in many ways that time

I know you will get a lot of requests but I hope you read this since this is my first comment on your channel (though Im following from 2019). Lucia movie has won best audience choice award at London Indian Film Festival (LIFF) It was first kannada movie to premiere in london which also became first (and only) kannada movie to win award at LIFF. First kannada movie you watched was KGF which was a commercial one. You made a wrong choice by choosing ulidavadu kandanthe as 2nd one which was an experimental movie. But Lucia has everything (content oriented movie). I was surprised that you chose ulidavaru kandanthe as 2nd one over Lucia. Im sure if watch you would love its making and direction. Its an illusion of dream and reality. It will definitely keep you engaging till the end. I thought of recommending this movie to you long back but I know that many of the comments will be ignored (I know there will be too many requests) but this time I thought of giving a try. I hope this comment wont be ignored and wasted. Only thing I want is to recommend you one good content oriented movie which you have left. Will be waiting for review of Lucia...........

Watched it on Dailymotion , it was wonderful! Next completed watching your review next, loved loved loved the review, I am sure all the film cast and crew will appreciate your review. Totally agree with your views about blurring the nude scenes out. But having born and raised in India, I can understand why people might feel uncomfortable to watch nude scenes with their parents. As you have begun to appreciate India and Indian content, you will take much more time to understand the multi-pronged dichotomies, hypocrisies, conflicts of reason, culture, customs, progressive thinking, liberal mindset, conservatism, preservation of culture, etc etc all packed and preached in one society which in parts lives in modern age and in parts does not want to see beyond its religious beliefs and customs, a society that has left its villages, but still thinks of cities as abomination of values and culture. The tech-age is thrusting change into Indian societies at 5G speeds even before 5G was invented. Indian society need to have its own time to adopt and adapt to change, a time that says "catch me if you can". Content that you watch and appreciate so much is also born in the same society, all is born in this land of plentitudes of diversity and complexity! Have fun and enjoy the rollercoaster ride that is India.
