For stars I think it’s roughly a 1 with 21 or 22 zeros after it. Those numbers aren’t close to each other bc one of them is ten times the size of the other, but it’s something like that. It’s a bit of a moot point bc the non observable universe, ie the part that the light hasn’t reached us from yet, dwarfs this number anyway.

One night while on duty on the flight deck (not at flight ops) of an aircraft carrier out a sea near the equator I was standing on the top an airplane. Looking around everything was dark except for the sky filled with stars. I could almost feel like I was standing in an empty universe. I have never forgotten what that was like. The star light was slightly illuminating the gray aircraft around me. But just looking up and gazing at the stars was a unique experience.
Before the population explosion there was a time when I would camp as a kid (40 years ago) that I remember that very sight you explained. It was unbelievable and I doubt I'll ever experience again.

I had a similar opportunity standing watch on the bridge of a submarine at sea. When you're hundreds of miles at sea, middle of the night, no clouds, no moon ... it was absolutely mind-boggling.

To live in a time when we have telescopes strong enough to explore the universe, how lucky we are, even if the vastness is beyond our full comprehension.
I have "felt" infinity (a weird waking dream/realization of what it really means) and even if the universe is finite, we are still indeed fortunate to be a part of it.
Here's something that gets me.
If you go out at night, somewhere with dark skies and look up, you might think: "Wow. That's a lot of stars. The universe is so vast..." Or something like that.
If you know where to look, you'll see a little blurry blob of light. That's the Andromeda Galaxy.
That is the only thing easily visible to the naked eye that's outside of our galaxy.
Everything else you can see up there (unless you have a telescope and/or an incredibly clear dark sky) is a star in this one galaxy. Mostly in our little section of the galaxy.
Just one little galaxy.
and out of the billions of stars within our own galaxy, we only see 10,000 of them if you are lucky.
You can only see 5000 stars with naked eye. Even the nearest galaxy Andromeda would take 29 trillion years to drive there

The one FACT that blows me away is that the so-called “edge” of our observable universe is also the “center” of some other creatures looking back at us wondering the same thing, and because space is expanding, we can never, ever meet.

@@pootthatbak2578 - One of the best proof is the Hubble Constant and Cepheid Variable stars. Cepheid Variables shine the same pattern in any distance. Yet the farther away they are the more red shifted they become. This confirms they are moving away because space is also expanding at each distance mark. At some point this continues until the distant sky becomes black. The night sky appears black because light from distant stars redshifts to until its no longer visible to us.
It has bothered me since I was a kid that I can't accurately even start to visualize even our own galaxy.
We're not evolved to experience phenomena at such a vast scale. For that matter, we can't experience phenomena at microscopic scales either, much less quantum scales.
Nevertheless, we can very ably WORK at those scales, by means of mathematics for the ideas, and by using various instruments and devices for the physical interactions. Our own evolutionary limitations are not really slowing us down much at all, now that we have science to help us.
I'm remembering back to high school chemistry: Avogadro's Number is 6.02x10^23. That's the number of molecules in one Mole of something. Weigh out one mole of something on your kitchen scale and you'll have roughly that many molecules of it sitting right there. That's 60200000000000000000000 molecules. I might have missed a zero there.
Of course we can't experience that particular number in anything like the way we can experience a crowd of half a million people at Woodstock. We can't see radio waves either, even though we can see light.
It's okay. It's still such a privilege to be a piece of the universe that THINKS!

@@MOZAIKISLAM I hear you brother, and respect your faith, but I don't recall any intergalactic maps in the Quran. Faith in a higher power does not absolve us from our duties of discovery while we're alive, but rather allows us inner peace, and a foundation of values that allows undistracted focus.

I remember what a professor told us in college. Before I dropped out, that is. He said don't worry if you can't comprehend large numbers or even Infinity. No matter how intelligent the human mind is, no one can contemplate the number of stars in the universe. It's simply not possible. You might spit out a number, but you will not understand it like you do 25 ft. Or 25 lb.
I will give it a go.
If you counted the 4*10^23 stars at a rate of one million stars per second, it would take you 13.8 billion years to count them all, the lifetime of the universe!!! I feel small.

There is no one that has ever lived that can truly comprehend billions of anything. They understand the mathematical concept, but they truly have no idea how much that is, unlike someone telling me they lifted 40 lb. I know how heavy 40 pounds is. I understand what a seven-foot-tall person looks like. But I could not comprehend a person who is 7 light years in length. Do you know what I mean? There is a difference between the mathematical reality, and true understanding via comprehension. Thirteen billion years to count the mall? You and I have no idea how long thirteen billion years is until we've lived it.

@@user-nj1zu2nf1x but it's really not...I and I'm sure countless others have been able to. I've personally attended thousands of hours of contemplation, thought experiments, deep open discussions. Some sober, most with neurostimulating chemicals, to facilitate being able to "see the bigger picture" And to be able to integrate all the moving parts into a fuzzy, yet understandable model of the universe. Many of those hours where on the possibility of it being an infinite universe, and that it's "always existed", that one is a lot more challenging to digest and understand, still not impossible

The universe is dope .. total dope ... We only begin to think about what's out there.. One day, I suspect we'll know. Science says the odds of other life being out there are higher against than the total number of planets out there. It's why, as science progressively proves what's in the Bible to be true, that I believe there is something magical out there .. and despite having, seemingly, a very similar background to Brian, both academically & in terms of my views, through my first 40+ of life, about faith (I was atheist), I now believe it's most likely we have a Creator out there ... 😊
I'm not worried because someone out there might be able to conceptualise this stuff when I can't; generally speaking I am comforted by the fact that there are people far, far smarter than I am.

Imagine every star is a grain of sand. Combine every beach in the world and there are probably still more stars than grains of sand. The milky way galaxy is like the size of one smallish beach. Thats how I had it put to me and seems to be the easiest way to visualise it.

Take a grain of sand to represent the sun and another grain of sand to represent alpha Centauri basically the closest next sun at that scale you would have to separate them by 4 miles to show the distance between Centauri us. That's approx 4 light years. With today's rocket's it would take over 100000 year's to get to Centauri.
The thing that always creeps me out when thinking about it, is yes, it takes 100,000+ years for the light of another galaxy to reach us, to allow us to see it actually exists. But, if it took that long to reach us, how the hell do we know it's still there and hasn't been snuffed out? It will take another 100,000+ years for us to see it blink out.

Its also mind boggling to realize that when you see an image of our own milky way galaxy, draw a small circle in the cluster of stars. In that little circle are the visible stars that we see at night,(Arcturus, Sirius,Rigel..etc). The rest of our own galaxy just appears as a smear of stars.
These are the kind of things I love learning about and talking about and reading about. Instead of man-made mythology that indoctrinate children into believing the earth is the center of the universe and it’s only 6000 years old and flat and evolution isn’t true and humans road dinosaurs and on and on. the universe is such an amazing thing to learn about because it’s real and testable and interesting. I had a theoretical physicist and astronomer who described the universe as being made up of a near infinite number of galaxies, and a near infinite number of universes making up reality. Then they blew my mind by asking if there was anything beyond reality? Other dimensions? Multiple levels of realities? Higher levels of existence?
I have a tremendous respect for science and religion. When you think about how incredibly vast the universe is and how we know so little, I don't think it's any more absurd to say a god created it than it is to say it didn't.
