Watching this video, this is like a love relationship between a couple that was lost but now found again. You can really see the genuine excitement he has for the car. The WRX is without a doubt HIS car.
Holy cow just watched your first pull on the straight road dang it looks like so much fun and sounds amazing when that. Thing opens up its like it gets more power to does it have a diffrence between when it's closed and one
EWG helps with over boosting. It's a good upgrade in my personal opinion so you dont fry the rings. you can make it white by feeding it into the exhaust but why the hell would you ever want to do that. best money i ever spent :) and it gets looks and scares people walking :)
The exhaust dump causes you to bypass all the exhaust components and that reduces the back pressure and that gives you more power. The other thing it does is gets the turbo spinning more.
Awesome quickdrive review Matt! I think you should keep them coming for those who wanna see a quick video or dont have time to watch a full review. Then separate the full review. Awesome review btw. That wrx sounds wicked.
Thank you!!! My weekend car is a 2011 WRX hatch premium COBB stage 1, and your 2013 review is one of my favorite reviews of yours. This new vid is great. Keep doing WRX/STI stuff every chance you get! Oh but one thing, switching to a base model hood wont hide the sti widebody on the '11-'14...
You have a wastegate dump to keep the back pressure down. Normally the wastegate and exhaust merge in the 02 housing. When the wastegate opens it creates turbulence and back pressure. 02 dumps dump directly out of the wastage to the atmosphere instead of into the exhaust
Steering on these 08-14 WRX sucks so bad and i only ended up realizing that once I went with the 15+ STI steering rack. 08-14 wrx had a 15-1 ratio for the rack versus the 15+ STI had a 13-1 rack. Quickest rack Subaru made so once I went with the 15+ STI rack in my 11', Ive realized that these cars are a touge machine with the right parts. God I love ewg noises tho, makes me happy lol
dump waste gate + blow off valve 2 mods that I'll be adding to me 05 wrx this summer. omg that sounds amazing and im keeping my stock exhaust so that I can really decide when I want it loud.
External wastegate helps to maintain optimal boost pressure, which is why you hear a lot of flutter when paired with an electronic boost control solenoid
Hot damn! This was shot not far from where I work! I saw the Spitz Auto Yard in the background and thought it looked familiar, then when I saw the area code for the dealership, I knew exactly where that was. Cool!
With the bonnet air scoop the cold air comes in which helps the air filter to suck in cold air which is more dense more oxygen requires more fuel bigger the spark more power to the wheels and I'm from the UK
i have test drive this car this morning! was a stock 2012 tho i cant say i love it but cant say that i hate it either the clutch feels awkward at first and the engine seems to die close to 6k but overall its a good car for all season and it made me wanna look for a sti!
That appears to be the stock turbo, on the 11-14 model wrx's they upgraded the turbo to the vf-52 from the factory. The pervious 08-10 used the vf-48. That car looks like a ton of fun to drive!!! Hopefully whoever did the work and tune has it setup safely so it doesn't blow up. I'd be nervous to buy something modded from a used car dealership, most don't warranty any of their modded vehicles. Keep up the great work man!!
Glass-Man-252 The owner left the Accessport on the car(worth nearly $700). With that, you can monitor your Air to Fuel ratio. As long as that is fine, you won't have a problem. You can set it up to warn you so you can back off when it leans out to prevent engine damage.

The external wastegate is a way to bypass the shortcoming of a small sized turbine housing. Basically you select the size of the cross sectional area of the exhaust path of the turbine housing. The smaller it is, the faster the exhaust has to flow through it. The faster it flows, the faster it spins the turbo. On the opposite end, you have a compressor that can generate boost over a certain rpm range. You sync the turbine cross sectional area with the compressor's capability. For example, a TD04-13T has a small 6 cm^2 cross sectional area. A small amount of air flow through the engine has to squeeze through the turbine. With the small size, it has to flow quite fast. Low engine flow and fast turbine flow means the ability to produce boost and pretty low rpms. Well if that's the case, do we all want tiny turbines? Would we want to put a tiny 6cm^2 turbine on a GT35R? The answer is no. The compressor still only has a certain bandwidth that it can function, so you still have to size the turbine appropriately for the compressor. If the turbine is too small, you would just end up with compressor surge. A 6cm^2 works fine for a little 13T compressor on the stock turbo. There's even a smaller 5cm^2 turbine used on a different vehicle. If you step up to an 18G, 6cm*2 is too small. 7cm^2 will still produce a small amount of compressor surge if you're really pushing it. An 8cm^2 is more appropriate for an 18G based on what the compressor can and can not do. It doesn't help to go small if the compressor can't even use the rpms at lower flow levels. As you go to bigger and bigger turbos, the turbine cross sectional area goes up and up to match the functional bandwidth of the compressor. Why do people run a 10cm^2 turbine on a small 16G then? Why does something like this even exist? Well, there is a shortcoming to a small turbine cross sectional area. There are a couple problems with small turbines paired to big compressors. One, there's the matter of mechanical efficiency. Small is less efficient. The efficiency difference can be moderate. Two, the small size has a flow limit, a choke limit where no more air can pass through no matter what you do. This is physics, and it's something you can't avoid. It's a lot like the nozzle on your air compressor. You can have 120psi on the back side pushing that air out the little spray nozzle on the air compressor, but only a small amount of air is actually flowing through. The design of the nozzle (size and shape) define what that limit will be, and you end up with a very specific cfm (cubic feet per minute) of flow through that nozzle. The turbine cross sectional area is effectively that nozzle on your air compressor. It's only so big and will only flow so much air. Even if you stick a huge turbo on the car, that turbine will limit total flow that can go out. So what do you do? A lot of people just run a larger turbine size. Bigger turbine, higher flow, higher HP. Win win right? Well, you do spool up later, so some functionality is lost. Instead of spooling at 3k rpm, now you're spooling at 4k rpm. There's no fix for this either. The flow velocity of air through the turbine only spins the turbine so fast. The turbine spins the compressor, and the compressor only spins so fast. That speed directly correlates to cfm flow and boost pressure. If it spins too slow, it can't make boost. So you want to spin up the turbine fast but also not be restrictive and choke the total flow? This is where external wastegates come into play. You add an external wastegate and you provide a secondary exit prior to the turbine that the extra exhaust can go. You can use just enough exhaust to spin up the turbine and the compressor to make boost. Then you just dump the rest. You can retain a small turbine, early spool up, and bypass that inevitable exhaust flow restriction that would otherwise happen if ALL the exhaust had to squeeze through the turbine. With the external wastegate added, now you might use half to spin the turbo and just dump out the other half. When you bypass the turbine, you can dump it to atmosphere or plum it back into the exhaust after the turbine. If you dumb to atmosphere, it's obviously very loud. Some folks do add a muffler of some sort. Some don't. A lot of people also just route the wastegate pipe back into the exhaust to keep things quiet. Sometimes this is important as some motorsports does have dB restrictions.
My friend bought this car! XD it blew up 4 months later. This thing was rigged horribly, needed a new clutch & a piston blew which lead to a new motor. Cheers to dealers who actually check their cars.
3:35 :D Subaru's just sound fucking amazing. Great video, and nice shifting too. I wouldn't mind driving a car that loud, would be too much fun. I know my passengers would hate it tho lol. -_-

A wastegate is what lets the excess exhaust out to bypass the turbo so that the turbo does not overspool and build up too much pressure and blow your engine. The difference from an internal to an external Watergate is that an external is interchangeable and can normally let more exhaust out
Looks like you're smiling more in a WRX than in your Mustang. That subie blood.
Lol idiot you can smile in any car with almost the same setup!
^^ lol why is this dude mad? Haha probably a Mustang fanboy
Trevor Philips haha maybe and i can say that the mustang is better than that car! but right you are a suburu fanboy!
ps31871 let's not compare apples to oranges xD
ps31871 don't compare the glorified for mazdaspeed miata to the awd sports sedan....
His reaction "It's that wastegate opening up" "It opens up at like 3.5 4grand and just brahhhhh" priceless reaction!!
I was having a really bad day and this video cheered tf out of me! 👍👍👍
Glad it helped!
The external wastegate reduces exhaust backpressure lowers the exhaust temperature and sounds really sexy on Subarus
+CarGuyandapetrolhead forhp better boost control as well!
Watching this video, this is like a love relationship between a couple that was lost but now found again. You can really see the genuine excitement he has for the car. The WRX is without a doubt HIS car.
Your reactions to boost is always so awesome. Many of us would try to contain our excitement. But yours is so raw. Haha. Keep up the videos.
I was worried it was gonna be a crap review for some dealership, but watching his excitement with the car was enough to make me smile too
Dude this car is so you man you should of gotten one
As always: Priceless reaction Matt :D
Damn that sounds to mean for the streets I feel that the police would be all over that
Its INSANELY loud, but only when you're pretty much WOT. See a cop, upshift and keep looking straight haha
Adam Tebas So true. Every time lol
Carmicha3l True!! Itd look a little suspicious if you were going up a hill, stopped, then started rolling back tho LOOL!
i got a built wrx 2 days ago and it has a bov and wastegate so these sounds make me smile even more because i know how it sounds in person
If you come to LA let me know I have an open wastegate dump on my turbo BRZ you can totally drive
Haha thanks that sounds pretty crazy!
Holy cow just watched your first pull on the straight road dang it looks like so much fun and sounds amazing when that. Thing opens up its like it gets more power to does it have a diffrence between when it's closed and one
Yeah the dump definitely allows the car to make more power because there's essentially no restriction.
subaruwrxfan better exhaust flow the quicker the turbo spools

The ewg keeps the car from boost creeping, which the 2.5 liter subaru's tend to do when catless.
When the waste gate opened up his smile made me smile from the joy he got out of it
Loved the dude's sheer child like excitement when that thing opens up.
Can't beat the sound of dumping to the ground haha! nice video man

I think Subaruwrxfan should buy the best awd car on the market money can by - I think it's called a Subaru wrx!:)
Ya mon! You first mon!
Greg Laurence hahahhahahahaahauehueue
Ford RS should give awd subie a run for their money
+ShermaNator but u never get a subie rumble;) sry
Subies are fine cars but I like new things :P
awesome, thanks matt!
btw, ouch...the carfax states at 972 miles "Maintenance inspection completed
Transmission removed to complete repair".
subaru wrx fan in a subaru wrx? what is this!
Just got this upgrade and boy is it fun! :)
Diggin this new idea, "Quick Drive"lookin forward to more in this series!! HashtagWasteGateWednesday!!

What a surprise when you first stepped on it. It seemed like a normal wrx till it got in boost. Wow always wondered that sound awesome review bro !

This guys reaction is everything 😂😂
Yo his reaction is so on point
Sounds nice. my friend has a 2006 wrx sti and it sounds just like this. I can hear it blocks away
This made all of us at home laugh. more like thatdudeinblue videos. good job, i can't wait to do the same set up
If I had the money, I would buy this wrx in a heart beat. This is exactly what I want as far as engine modifications go.
Wow Matt, you really had some fun there! I'd love to drive this
NICE Quick Drive: External Wastegate Dump WRX
your reaction alone is amazing!!

Who could dislike this video? I think its hilarious!!
I have had an EWG on an old 06 STI, thing was so bonkahs
You get one to hold boost better!
This was awesome, you should try and make more!
Trade your mustang in for that WRX!!
I'm addicted to that sound
same here
This channel is absolutely great! You should Review a a 2013-2014 Honda Accord Sport
Stock VF52. Also the 5 speed can’t handle much more then 300whp, surprising how quick these are for around 260-300 this would make.
LMFAOO!! that acceleration!! your awesome dude
i think we were waiting for your reaction the whole time
My friend bought this car! XD it blew up 4 months later. This thing was rigged horribly, needed a new clutch & a piston blew which lead to a new motor. Cheers to dealers who actually check their cars.
not surprised. your friend was a dope to buy this.
+Vr38 same car, paid to get a new engine and rebuilt the turbo
This is the only video I've found where the EWG actually sounds good. Every other video makes it sound like the car is broken for some reason.
That priceless reaction at 3:45. Insanity!
It's so obvious how much you love the wrx lol
I want that!! It's so freaking loud! I love loud cars!! 😊😍😍😍😍
Awesome :) all cars should be like this, yeeeeoooooowwwww
Watching you do pulls in catless cars always makes me smile lol 😂😂😂
Sounds like a tial 38mm wastegate. But I'm pretty sure its stock turbo looks like it.
Looks awesome to drive!!
more videos like this please !! eargasm!!!
I love to see new subaru romances
I need that external wastegate XD
please do more of these!
I don't even like these but damn that sounds good
3:35 :D Subaru's just sound fucking amazing. Great video, and nice shifting too. I wouldn't mind driving a car that loud, would be too much fun. I know my passengers would hate it tho lol. -_-
What do you think is a better car between a WRX hatch (stock) and a Golf GTI
Makes you want a wrx again huh?? nothing like some UEL headers man rumble rumble rumble!
i love his reaction to the wastegate haha so priceless
Is it possible for you to do an r32 review since they're in the US now?
I didn't have time to comment on this video when it was actually uploaded, but this WRX is epic! And I absolutely love the sound. Oh, and BTW, Was that Ralliart next to the WRX the same one you reviewed?

Looking to buy this as my 1st should I get it
face at 4:00.. priceless
You can't hide the happiness of getting in the gas of these cars!!! haha
you should do more modified car reviews
Would love to see a review of the X5M one day!
subaruwrxfan YOU NEED TO DO A REVIEW ON THIS NOWW!!!! lol
Likely the stock turbo since it spools so early.
+80sguitarplayer No, probably a 20g
that looks good fun !
that sounds dirty! me likey:D
gotta love the sound of a boxer :)
Hey you gotta do a review of a Supra MK4, GTR and a Nismo 370 man
But would you have this as a daily driver?
What is an external wastegate and what does it do? Why would you want to upgrade it?
A wastegate is what lets the excess exhaust out to bypass the turbo so that the turbo does not overspool and build up too much pressure and blow your engine. The difference from an internal to an external Watergate is that an external is interchangeable and can normally let more exhaust out
back in a mans car
Do you watch engineer explained?? the guy that does engineer vids about cars... highly recommend :)

I want one so bad! 😭
I test drove a 08 sti and it felt loose, heavy, and didnt seem much faster than my 02 wrx. My 02 wrx is much more stiff. Weird I know.
