Who realized this behind the scene clean up was so intense. We all moved on, although this tragedy will never leave us yet his video shows how incredible the human spirit is. Bravo to all who worked these very necessary and heartbreaking tasks. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
I remember waiting for the earth movers (shakers) to sprinkle the debris and then we would go in a search hoping to find pieces of pockets that might hold pieces of ID which may help bring closure to the families of the slaughtered. Then we had buckets to place them in. As inhumane as it was, I remember placing pieces of bones in buckets. It was surreal. The attacks completely changed my life and I later focused my life’s work in counterterrorism. Watching this video gives me a first time appreciation for all that went into making this happen. Thank you for sharing this, and for all that were involved in planning this operation, to those that operated the heavy machinery, to those that fed us and provided us safety gear, God bless you and thank you. I still have my purple face mask that I was issued at Fresh Kills and can’t seem to part with it. To the fallen.

I always wondered what happened to all the debri and how it was handled to help find and identify those lost. It is amazing to see and know what the human race is capable of accomplishing in the pursuit of healing and closure. Thank you so much for making this video and to all those who helped in this endeavor. We will never forget.
i love it. this is why i loved being in the military. the ability to go to an empty field. & set up a fully functioning hospital unit with all the equipment, supplies & personnel ready to receive patients in a matter of hours. this operation they set up within hours is impressive. agencies working together, it's just beautiful to watch. good job every last one of these people. i shared this on fb, i hope it gets watched by at least some folks. damn, they were thorough!
I had seen pictures of the smashed-up ambulances, fire trucks and police cars, but I had absolutely no clue that a project like this was undertaken. Those people sorting the materials for remains or personal effects were heroes of a rare nature. In every kind of weather; rain, sleet and blazing 10-degree days in their ppds were dedicated to the extreme to bring closure and healing to the friends and families of the dead by finding every little scrap. The most touching and fascinating story I heard was the discovery of tiny gold locket, crushed but still internally intact that contained a little lock of hair. The dna was identified and the locket given to the family, but what amazed and touched me was that that family had something to bury because the hair belonged to the deceased. They never found anything else from that person.
This is the bit you don't see. How many countries would have just dumped the debris and called it a day, here a massive operation took place just to find what little remained of the lives shattered in the event. This deserves more recognition.
I was in turkey last year when the earth quakes happened. 50000 people died. The buildings collapsed the same way the towers did. Not a day in some cities and they just started bulldozing. Over the rubble people probobly where killed from it
no country would've just dumped the debris and called it a day. what many countries would lack is the resources to do it. but hey, at least we don't interfere with the worlds affairs so badly that we would ever need to deal with the aftermath of a terrorist attack of that scale. we don't opress the remainder of humanity enough to attract that much hatred. so... kinda proud not to be from a country that... exceptional.
Such a powerful video that moved me to my core ❤ With September 11th coming up in just over a week, I hope it is seen by millions of people like me who knew nothing about these behind the scenes heroes who worked so tirelessly to help bring closure for so many.
Interesting that all the workers are wearing ventilators to sift through the material. But during the weeks that followed at ground zero and the surrounding area, people were told that the air was safe to breath. Hundreds of fire fighters have since died of cancer and lung problems.
Watching this in 2023 (22years after 9/11) and it is still haunting. This was a very interesting documentary and definitely something I never even thought of. I wonder how people felt going through a crime scene that shook the world?🥀
23 years ago but still so powerful! Respect and gratitude to all the men and women who dedicated their time and efforts to the entire cleanup process of this tragedy ❤️ This deserves so many more views.
The effort and dedication given to the project is amazing. Looking thru such a large scale of debris for human remains/ personal items is touching. And essentially the whole thing is a crime scene as well so anything could be evidence.

That they found any remains at all is beyond impressive..those buildings shredded everything up..pulverized all that was caught in the collapse...very impressive indeed!!! Prayers for all the families that lost loved ones...some families had more than 1 member lost..🙏🏿

4:25. I was the night shift FBI medic. December 2001. I worked out of the truck with the red cross on the roof. Played hockey with Richard Marx when we were kids and didn't know he had joined the Bu until I saw him there. On my first day in I took a wrong turn and was driving behind one of the huge dump trucks. A steel beam rolled off and almost crushed my rental car. By the time I left that car was caked in crud that would not come off. Fresh Kills had a unique smell that I will never forget.
How on earth was this operation performed so meticulously, it’s not like they had anything on this scale to deal with before, makes you proud to be human but even more so it shows how much more we in the west value life. Amazing, totally amazing. ❤

It's taken me 23 years to find this video. I truly appreciate getting to watch it and understand in much more detail what happened after that fateful day. I'm in Denver and am in the financial services industry and I watched this in horror on TV. The one thing that I remember intensely were the skies with no airplanes. We all feel the effects of this attack as we go through the TSA lines and grumble. I'm thankful for every air marshal, police officer that has to deal with people that are rude on our aircraft. I talked to friends at Depository Trust Clearing Corporation soon after 9/11 who were located at 55 Water Street. Their emotions, feelings and memories are so meaningful to me. I know what I felt but I realized there was so much more that these people felt. WE WILL NOT FORGET.
I was in the Air Force when this happened and we knew when the 2nd plane hit we were going to war. The whole base went on lock down and life changed forever. I was so preoccupied, I never saw any of this happening. Thank you for posting this. I was always curious how this transpired.
You didn't realise at the time where the trade centre debris went as the site at ground zero was respectfully cleared l. Yet to this day, the sad reality is that many families have never had a body, remains, or personal belonging. Such wicked wicked act caused so much imaginable suffering for loved ones.
I am astonished by the scale and care of this. What a massive effort all done out of respect and empathy. I really did not appreciate enough what was done.
I Have just watched this never seen before footage thank you to all the agencies and workers who carried out all this work to recover to give peace to the families and the nation. we will never forget Amen

Thanks for putting up, never even gave the aftermath a thought as like every disaster or even crash or simple death somebody else sorts it. We rarely think about it but it happens everyday. This was a major operation
My son and I own several 18 yard ford sterling dump trucks and two bulldozer 2 excavators and 3 skidsteers and front end loaders and a labor crew of 9 individuals We ran a construction demolition company in Florida in those day's We wanted to volunteer our services to the NYC recovery program , but they told us they had too many trucks and equipment on site , and that they had intended to make use of the barge ships in the area etc ,etc 🚢 ...I wasn't too upset about Being told no . At least we offered to help Free of charge..I'm a Vietnam War veteran and i love my country . ❤️ God bless those man and women that worked the recovery operation the NYC police department and the fire and rescue NYCFD 🙏 . Some who are 🤒 ill to this day from being exposed to the toxins in that nightmare of a disaster 💔
I always wondered how the US recovered and dealt with all the debris as it was technically a crime scene, this was a very well put together video. thankyou. 24 years on and still one of the worse tragedy's to happen in modern times.
This is such a good video. I often wondered how they managed to remove everything from the site. While not absolutely perfect, this is as thorough a search process as possible.
Amazing video. I had always thought they cleaned up from the site and that was that. Never knew how much went into removing the rubble. Thank you very much for the video
I’ve never seen how this was all done . For years i wondered how they cleaned it up and searched for bodies parts etc . How the continued for two years is amazing.
Out of all the comments this strongly resonates with me and thousands of others. God bless everyone involved. Our country and the world were changed that day forever
That's same job I was doing at the time too. I remember starting to ask where a part was when the second tower fell on TV . I was driving between the shop and the warehouse when the first one fell. I remember like yesterday. Hey Mark where's this... Oh no .. Thinking there went thousands of lives. I was in Colorado, still in Colorado but that was my job then too. I was glued to the radio that day while I made my deliveries.
I am just about to finish the book "Fall and Rise" The story of 9/11 and they talk about this operation and I did a search and found this video...Thank you so much!
This was one hell of an operation, with that the one thing that can be said is When the going gets tough--The tough gets going. No one on this earth would have done this in the matter of which we did it . Trying to preserve evidence and collect personal belongings to try and return things back to the family’s of lost ones I have visited the 911 memorial and this one memorial that I feel that every AMERICAN should visit if they have the opportunity. That area of the city is very noisy, but when you walk up to the of the walls where the waters are cascading over the wall the noise of the city is totally silenced . This is a must see and feel experience.
A day that did not live in infamy for our enemies but in our strength, grace, and compassion for our fellow Americans. Oh, how quickly we forget the lessons of our past.
I've said this for awhile now. Unfortunately it will take another major major disaster for people to realize we are all Americans an are all on the same team. Sad.
Enemies? That's what matters to you, "American citizen." You may be wondering why US have so many enemies. Oh, of course! Vietnam, Hiroshima, Nagazaki. Nuclear tests in Puerto Rico. Ooh, you are such lovely people.
@@hectoraaronwirth602 I dont believe that you are serious right now. If you look at each situation indiviually, you know that we are talking about something completely different each time. Also, everyone and every country have made "mistakes" and any innocent human death is a tragedy. Again, a tragedy, tragedy that most gum chewing people don't wrap their heads around on how serious it is, no matter what "side" they are on. So please, for your own sake, stop this. Veeeery few ppl all around the world, want to actually harm someone like this or celebrate any form of human death.
One of the things that always stuck in my head is how so many peoples consciousness of the issues faced by the clean up, ended with the cleanup of Manhattan, but it was only the start. People working at FKL, the transport crews, engineering, santitation, public health and many more were behind the scenes doing their work. They are just as heroic as the men and women at ground zero. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for every single person involved.
Good morning, everyone. It's 5:52 AM EST. Around this time 22 years ago everyone was waking up just like right now, preparing for another day. The attackers were literally making their way through security at the airports during this time. Parents said goodbye to their children, to their families, not knowing it would be the last time they would ever see each other. I wasn't a victim of 9/11. I was only a child then and lived in a different state, so I don't want to give the impression I have any relation to the events.
Amazing video! It shows the other side of disaster; how the cleanup must be arranged just right. I had always wondered how they did it, and this video was an awesome find. Thank you YT for this recommendation. And GOD bless all involved in September 11, 2001...
😮wow, I'm impressed! If all these agencies worked hand in hand with no barriers , why can't they do it on others. Had no idea this all took place. Amazing!
I'm so sorry I did not know this before! Amazing concerted efforts between agencies to learner this horrific, unimaginable still! event. This is an ultimate example of how we truly can pull together. I look forward to the day when working together instead of being divided returns. THE Ultimate gratitude and awe to each who participated in these amazing efforts!
I remember TV footage of some of the recovery and I was stunned by the huge pile of loose coins. All the pockets, purses and desk drawers that they came from . . .
A friend of ours got a call for all medical personnel to go to the hospital and a call for "all hands on deck". Nobody arrived that was a victim of the towers or their collapse. I think the stunned silence was the most painful.
Can you imagine a human being turned into merely dust and using teeth or other things to identify a person I’m still mad 20 years later I’m a true American not because I live in the US but because I believe that at the end of the day we all are one no matter what 🙌🏾
Just worries me because I’m sure there are still human remains there. While all those folks worked hard for so long to sift through stuff. Im sure there were many times they saw something (inadvertently or not), and passed it through.
There's a great documentary called "The Last Secrets of 911" in which the processes of DNA extraction and remains identification are explained in depth. Really interesting documentary and I highly recommend it. In it, people who are part of those identification efforts openly admit there are still people buried at Fresh Kills in the form of fragments that were too small to be identified as such with the technology and means of the time. Its unfortunately the large limitation when there is such a large, diverse volume of material that they had to sift through.
I believe 40% haven’t been identified, it’s haunting to think of that high number, I can’t imagine how families, loved ones have to live knowing that they’ve haven’t found their loved ones.

Thank you for helping. 🇺🇸🙏
L uomo è questo, empatico, amorevole e pronto ad aiutare il prossimo, un video bellissimo (se si può dire) che dà speranza, perché se tendi una mano all altro tutto si può fare. Bravi bravi bravi, persone speciali ❤
You do America and Israel are the Terrorists of the world?
Did you see plane parts? How much of the planes were found?
I always wondered what happened to all the debri and how it was handled to help find and identify those lost. It is amazing to see and know what the human race is capable of accomplishing in the pursuit of healing and closure. Thank you so much for making this video and to all those who helped in this endeavor. We will never forget.
Thank you to all that helped with the recovery project. Everyone worked endlessly to help bring closure to grieving families.
i love it. this is why i loved being in the military. the ability to go to an empty field.
Wow. There were 40 agencies working together. Think about that.
Amazing.
What did you THINK they were going to do with the debris? Leave it there? 🙄
@@poppyrowland1385Don't be an ass 🕳️ le.😡
This is the bit you don't see. How many countries would have just dumped the debris and called it a day, here a massive operation took place just to find what little remained of the lives shattered in the event. This deserves more recognition.
I was in turkey last year when the earth quakes happened. 50000 people died. The buildings collapsed the same way the towers did. Not a day in some cities and they just started bulldozing. Over the rubble people probobly where killed from it
With respect I don't believe any country would not search for peoples remains identity.....think before you talk....

Congratulations on having the only bitter comment towards someone out of hundreds on such a sobering film.
no country would've just dumped the debris and called it a day. what many countries would lack is the resources to do it. but hey, at least we don't interfere with the worlds affairs so badly that we would ever need to deal with the aftermath of a terrorist attack of that scale. we don't opress the remainder of humanity enough to attract that much hatred. so... kinda proud not to be from a country that... exceptional.
Both spectrums of humanity. One how evil humans can be to one another, and the other how respectful , sacred , and dignified to people we never knew.
This Absolutely deserves way more views.
The effort and dedication given to the project is amazing. Looking thru such a large scale of debris for human remains/ personal items is touching. And essentially the whole thing is a crime scene as well so anything could be evidence.
The extraordinarily officiant, meticulous and painstaking process can not be understated. What they were doing was so important to the cause of seeking answers and closure

The "Fresh Kills" Landfill. Such an eerie name given what happened.
The name “Fresh Kills” comes from the Middle Dutch word kille, meaning “riverbed” or “water channel.” Before the landfill opened in 1948, the Fresh Kills site was primarily tidal creeks and coastal marsh.
I knew I couldn't have been the only one thinking that. Regardless of it being named that for years before.
Kills means river. They changed the name I do believe.

i'm sure some couldn't take it day after day & took their own lives, also workers killed working at the recovery center. God Bless them.
I knew clean up and recovery was a big job, but I never knew this amount of work went into it. Absolutely astounding!
I couldn’t be in that mess day after day knowing there is over (2000 people/body parts) to be collected….Kudos to ALL of those workers👍🏼😓
Sometimes all a family received was a piece the size as a penny.
It’s crazy finding that in such a pile of rubble.
That they found any remains at all is beyond impressive..those buildings shredded everything up..pulverized all that was caught in the collapse...very impressive indeed!!! Prayers for all the families that lost loved ones...some families had more than 1 member lost..🙏🏿
I would have been honored to work sifting those many tons of debris. This is among our country’s finest collaborations ever. 22 years later, I am still moved, and continue to discover new content from this extraordinary event.
What an amazing operation! Well done to all of those involved.
God bless all of these innocent victims. I will never forget.
Absolutely incredible detail here. Thank you for putting this together.
First time I have seen this. A blessing that everything possible was done to try and identify all the missing loved ones from that terrible day.
How on earth was this operation performed so meticulously, it’s not like they had anything on this scale to deal with before, makes you proud to be human but even more so it shows how much more we in the west value life. Amazing, totally amazing. ❤

Phone Calls from Flight 93
When United Airlines Flight 93 was hijacked, thirteen passengers and crew members responded by placing phone calls to the authorities, to United Airlines, and to their family members and friends. According to the FBI, thirty-seven phone calls were placed from on board Flight 93 between 9:28 when the plane was hijacked until the time of the crash at 10:03. Thirty-five of these calls were made on the Airfones located on the back of the seats in the last nine rows of the plane. Credit card records reveal the time of the call, Airfone caller’s name, the number or numbers dialed, the duration of the call, and the row from which the call was placed. These phone records were entered as evidence during the sentencing trial of Zacarias Moussaoui in 2006. According to the 9/11 Commission Report, the series of calls from the flight provided vital information both to the ground and to the passengers. Calls from on board the plane revealed that:

The terrorists remained in control of the plane and chose to crash it rather than risk the passengers and crew regaining control of the aircraft. At 10:03 a.m., Flight 93 plowed into an empty field at a speed of 563 miles per hour.

Im from Argentina, on September 11 I was working in Newburgh NY doing deliveries of auto parts to mechanics in the área, Amazing video,
That's same job I was doing at the time too.

I have visited the 911 memorial and this one memorial that I feel that every AMERICAN should visit if they have the opportunity.
That area of the city is very noisy, but when you walk up to the of the walls where the waters are cascading over the wall the noise of the city is totally silenced . This is a must see and feel experience.

@@hectoraaronwirth602 where you from?
I remember this going on at the time, every so often it would be on the news. The magnitude blew my mind then, it still does
It doesn't matter how many times I watch the plane hit the towers... still gives me shivers everytime !

What an unimaginable task! 😢
Top notch Professionalism. A lesson to all either in the trade or no
Can you imagine a human being turned into merely dust and using teeth or other things to identify a person I’m still mad 20 years later I’m a true American not because I live in the US but because I believe that at the end of the day we all are one no matter what 🙌🏾
Amazing documentary. So glad I came across this.
This video needs more attention. I feel it’s a closing piece in the 911 story. A must see.
