  • I initially spotted this set at the local dump yesterday, though it was right at closing time, so I couldn't ask about it. So today, I got up and rode my bike down to the dump to ask about it. On the way, I dropped by Breckenridge Farmstay to pick up a newer CRT that I could use to trade at the dump, and continued on. I towed my four-wheeled trolley behind me on my bike, using an old pole as a crude draw-bar to tow the "trailer".
Once at the dump, I explained what I wanted to do, and the operator very kindly approved and let me swap the sets. He was very nice, but was concerned about how I was going to get it home. However, determined, I set off back home with the set. Things took a bad turn shortly though. The frame of my trolley started to bend, jamming the front wheels from turning, and the draw-bar also came apart. I was not far from Breckenridge, so I dropped by and bought a drink, and then called a taxi. The taxi picked me, the trolley and the set up, took me home, and brought me back so I could ride my bike home. The whole return trip came to the grand sum of $21!
This set is very nice, though it's a shame that the vinyl wood-grain is slightly damaged. It has the manufacturing date of "May 1st, 1979" stamped inside, and appears to be very well built. I fired it up, and living up to the high quality standards of Rank Arena products, it worked perfectly! I'm now planning on using it as my main television.

It's in great shape now! I've cleaned it up, and repaired/re-glued most of the vinyl wood-grain, so it's a real nice looking set now! I've also now got it set up as my main television.

It's not too far here. It's about a ten-fifteen minute bike ride from my house to Breckenridge. However, it becomes a couple of hours when towing something like this!

The only problem these sets have is dying capacitors in the power supply section.
If you have the time (and money), I used to replace all the caps on that board, and that usually solved most problems.
The only other weakness is caps on the vertical board drying up from being near the heatsink for the output stage. This can make the picture shrink vertically.
These sets have a huge mains transformer, (which adds to the weight), which can be used as a stepdown transformer, (240Volt to 125Volt)

I've really taken a liking to it now, and it's become one of my favourite sets in my collection. It's also my main set, and sees daily use.

There's not much left to see. I dismantled the antennae and some of the boosters, since I didn't really use it any more. I just plug the television/s into it directly via a coaxial cable, since I have enough cables to reach anywhere in my room.

I know, I need to get a new camera. Christmas isn't too far away, so with any luck, I'll get a new camera. My current one (a Canon PowerShot SX130) is a great camera, but starting to develop minor issues (such as the clicking, the scratches on the lens etc.). I have a feeling that the clicking is from the focus, which is having trouble because of the scratches on the lens. I might see what they say in the camera repair shop in town.

This set is freaking awesome!!!!!!! I like how your XBOX said it was in November 15, 2001. That sound you made at 3:45 was priceless! XD

Judging by the emblem featuring a figure striking a gong, I take it Rank Arena had something to do with J. Arthur Rank? In spite of what another poster claimed the Rank Organization had nothing to do with either the British government or Thorn Industries. However they did own Bush Radio and later bought out Murphy, I think that they licensed the Murphy name to AWA.

Is it sad that I just re-watched that part, and cracked up laughing? Oh dear god!

Thank you! I'm using this as my main television! I don't bother to set the date/time on any of my game consoles or DVD players, because I switch them off at the wall when not in use. I don't know why I made that zombie sound at 3:45 though!

Yeah, I love wood-grain. Even if it is only vinyl, I love colour sets with vinyl wood-grain!

We had one almost identical to this, but it was VHF only. I think we only had 2 channels 😥

I just use the RF output from my modulator on it. It works perfectly, and the set seems to have seen very little use before.

My camera also makes a loud "whirring" noise, which you can hear between the clicks. I don't know what's making that sound, but it always makes it when in operation - even in the photo viewing mode... It's due for repair or replacement though. It's been through a lot since I got it in 2011, and is starting to show the signs of age! In all fairness though, it did get treated very rough when I was living on a ranch in America for a year.

  • @TheCRTman
    @TheCRTman 11 лет назад

Not really! You should make a bloopers and deleted scenes compilation. I have shown many deleted scenes now, but there are some bloopers seen in the normal uploaded videos! It is funny how you did that when you turned off the lights. WHAT WAS IN THERE?? LOL!!

Ee, yuck! I don't like flat screens, mainly because of how poorly made they seem to be. Samsung seem to make decent flat panels, but they are about the only ones I like. The rest seem to be absolute rubbish. The Sanyo CRTs seem to be of a decent quality, though I've heard dubious things about the later CRTs and their range of flat panels.
