The tattoos identify the monkeys they've sterilized. The females you saw with what you thought were injured bottoms and tails. They were in estrus (heat). They get major swelling and more red in the bottom. Its so that the males can easily identify when they're in heat and when the females are at their peak of ovulation. The king of the troop keeps close eyes on those females. They will fight off any males he sees trying to mate with them. He wants to be the only one to mate with her. So he has more of his bloodines in the troop.

@@TravelWithBasselImad I absolutely agree. They can definitely make it less obvious, like in their inner arm or armpit. Believe it or not monkeys are very judgemental and bullies. There's alot of monkey politics in a troop.
