To be honest, Phuket and places like Patong have gone downhill, way too overcrowded and many farangs behaving badly.
Like Pattaya has always been
I see it the same way. When tourism gets to much ,then the place loses it's caracter, like Patong did.
Ive been there in 2007 and when I see,how it has changed its sad to see.
Its bad for the environment too as we can see.
But I still love Thailand, but not the overcrowded tourist destinations.

Hate to say it, but Phuket is overrated, was there a few months ago. Patong is too noisy and expensive. IMO, Ko Samui is better for relaxation, Pattaya is better for partying, and of course Bangkok for everything else...
Naaaaaa~~ Expensive its as expensive as Samui is, you CAN find food from 50 THB up
you shouldve avoided patong and visited the other areas of phuket...much nicer and quieter way better beaches also.
David, good to see you! Go to Nui beach, by far nicer than where you are now. It's a bit to get there, but by far, it's worth it. Go thru Kata beach and out towards Blues View. 🎉

Patong beach is very dirty, that’s why we will be staying at Kamala Beach this summer.
Kamala beach is awesome, Surin beach and Bang tao are probably the best.

Russians were always there even before the pandemic. Their presence in Phuket was already prevalent long before the war.

I went to Phuket with my family during Covid and it was just enough people around to enjoy the place. I cant imagine what a cesspool it is now. With the Russians, Chinese, yea a real Paradise.

Phuket is much more expensive compared to rest of Thailand and way too overcrowded with tourism. Was a sort of paradise island some 20 years ago, nowadays there are so much better places to go.

You may get a 50b street food here and there but hotels, rentals and especially transportation (taxis) etc. in Phuket always have a markup, similar to Phi Phi and other overcrowded tourist destinations, simple law of supply and demand

Stayed in Patong late last year and loved it
Loved Phuket late 80s and early 90s.
Going to be a lot of empty shops and stalls in Pa Tong when they shut down the Cannabis trade. I can't believe how many places there were last month. 40 Baht for a 750ml bottle instead of 30 for a litre....Not a good price

Overtourism has its pros and cons. with that no. of foreigners living in the country, I wonder what the locals feel. Yes it can boost income from businesses, but that could also be annoying.

Dave, did you know that most of the guys on the beach selling stuff are actually from Myanmar, not Thailand.
Oh not surprised really, have noticed a large influx on Myanmar people
@davidkhai It was the same as long as 15 years ago. The majority of the guys selling stuff along Khaosan Rd, for instance, were from Myanmar back then.
Spent a month there recently. Never again - the Russians have ruined it.

They have their own mafia running taxis, tours, massage parlours etc. They're unfriendly and if you can't speak Russian they just ignore you. So many of them too.

I first visited Phuket in 87 inand the place was immaculate. You could walk hundreds of yards of beach before another hotel would pop up. When 96, 98 and it was already starting to get over populated. Thank you for showing me where not to go. It’s worse than Tijuana 😂
Phuket is debauchery central in Thailand? Maybe in an alternative universe where Pattaya doesnt exist, Soi 6 alone have all of Phuket beat any day of the week.

I am told an international licence doesn't count there but it doesn't matter when hiring a scooter. How can you legally ride there? Or just go with the flow?
It’s sort of go with the flow, you technically need a international and motorbike license but they offer rentals everywhere

Freedom beach is okay but the trek to get there (and back) is awful, barely anyone is selling food or drink and it's overpriced. If you do go, take a long tail boat back to Patong so you don't kill yourself climbing back up. Not the cheapest boat ride but it's beautiful and so relaxing. I recommend ditching Freedom beach altogether and going to Banana beach instead. Secluded vibes and absolutely beautiful too. It's right off the road with food and drink that costs less than Freedom beach and vibes that are sublime.
My beach rating from best to worst: Banana beach, Kata, Mai Khao, Patong, Freedom

I praise the helmet-promoting parade. Too many traffic accidents occur there. Avoid Patong if you want quality. There are better towns to stay at on the island.

You need to fact check a bit kid, 63000 russian tourists in 2023 is really 1,4 million and a quick google search tells me; ''In the first three months of this year, 366,095 Russians arrived at Phuket International Airport''

Patong has been invaded by rich Russians and real estate as gone up so much some locals have been forced out of the housing market it’s got very expensive now Russians are being arrested and the Thai police even wanted to deport a Russian band who were singing and protesting about the Russian government you can’t relax on that beach 100 thai baht it’s about 30 thai baht in other parts outside patong is better
