  • Grow your woodworking business with "smalls"! Ready for the latest trends!?!
    Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with very little cost of goods sold!
    Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

    Got a tip. Dollar Tree has a lot of cheap laser cut Halloween decorations right now. I wanted to make a rustic pumpkin, but I can't free hand draw to save my life. I bought one of their pumpkins and am going to use it as the template to trace on my boards.
    They have plenty of others too. In fact they actually have a decent little wood craft section.

    There's a fella in my area that hangs out all fall and winter at the (yes, "the") abandoned gas station, giving out free bundles of firewood. He sources the wood from suburbs being cleared for development, so all it costs him is gas money. Any donations, he forwards along to local churches so they can provide warm clothes to families in need. I've gotten some pretty awesome stumps from him in the past! Most recently, he brought me a 13' long pine branch with a lot of character, that I'll be cleaning up and turning into a huge feature light to hang from the ceiling in my living room. :D

    Woodworking for money turns a hobby into a job and takes the fun out of it. At least for me it does. My regular job pays way more than woodworking ever would. I don't love it but it pays the bills. Prefer to keep woodworking as an enjoyable hobby.

      True. But if you're only after a few bucks, like a few hundred or a couple grand a year then these small projects could still be enjoyable. It work get boring and old to build and try to sell a bunch of them, I think.

    • @MatthewPeechWoodworking
      @MatthewPeechWoodworking  Год назад +1

      Hey AT! You know... if you are making the same thing over and over and over then yes... You can get burnt out and it is a job. What I do to keep that from happening is to make so many of one item and then move on. I like doing my own builds how I want to make them and then sell them. I would make 5 tables... market them as limited release... and then start on the next project that I wanted to make and repeat. The smalls help to grow as a woodworker, learn, and to create income when the larger items aren't. Just depends on how you look at it and how well you grow your name. Thanks for the input!

    Matt I have been turning out custom pieces for years, mainly for friends and family and their acquaintances, and as you have guessed next to no profit and sometimes at a loss especially where time and design is concerned….. So glad I happened across your videos, and I believe I’m going to start getting ready for the next season or holiday and start doing “ Small’s “ ! ! you are so right, I live in a small town where there are like 5-6 of these small craft shops and I am lucky enough to be in the centre of a couple to 3 hours away from large cities, Although Woodworking is not my source of income, I do find myself with 1-2 weeks off between turn arounds at my regular job, So I am going to see where this can take me. Thanks so much for the inspiration p, definitely will be subscribing and I’ll keep tabs and notes and perhaps give you an update in 6 months. Cheers Brother and keep up the Great work !

    On the painted cheese boards, most ppl use them as just decor so you could stain, throw on some painters tape and paint. Just be sure to add a note they are decor only. 😉

    Was in Hobby Lobby took and sent a pic to my daughters about a pumpkin decor for outdoors, a couple of fence pickets and distress the orange and white pumpkins, they loved it! Learned these things from you Matthew, defiantly would be considered smalls and so easy to make. Thank you again...

      Agree. Just recently I cranked out two jack’o lantern porch features (added some remote fairy lights inside). Added an interesting roof & branch for the stem. Also built a decorative holiday lantern - using old upright rails used in decking. Inside was filled with a decorative vase & more bright twinkling fairy lights. The fairy lights add a lot to these projects & are cheap as add ons. Ps - used a decorative wooden finial from old curtain rods as the lantern topper. Looked like it came from a high-end store.

    Great advice on the wood rounds. I cut over 100 of those from some scrap oak, pecan, and cherry wood destined for the burn pile. I sanded and sealed them with clear poly. I've made a pretty good sum of cash by selling these. My buyers want pictures of family, mom, dad, grandma, their kids, etc put on them. By selling them as "custom" I can charge more. Thanks for the awesome ideas.
