Reduce the number of groups of a categorical variable in SPSS

  • This example shows how to reduce a 5pt likert scale to a 3pt likert scale by combining 'Strongly agree' with 'Agree' and combining 'Strongly disagree' with 'Disagree'.
    This is useful when we are mainly interested in whether or not people agree, disagree or have no opinion, but it's not important to know whether they strongly agree or strongly disagree.
