Both Jana and Amelie Mauresmo were labeled as “the best players never won a Grand Slam” for a long time, until they achieved the victories at Master Final by beating Mary in 1997 and 2005, respectively. They went on to win Wimbledon next year. 🎉 (Amelie also won 2006 Australian Open.)
The head to head and this match in particular tips the balance to Novotna in the overall career standings. Despite Pierce having 2 singles slams and same number of finals Novotna was more often there or there abouts at top of game and, despite the famous nerves, she was a killer indoors
Mary had 2 slams and was runner up 4 times. She had bigger wins and had success across different generations. Jana was more consistent (most were tbh) but isn't the greater player.
@@thispicture84 not sure i agree. Novotna got to semis or better at slams more times, won more titles, has the year ends, won more money (despite retiring way earlier), more wins against seles and graf and owned pierce h2h when they were almost exact contemporaries
Mary never seemed to get going against Jana. Wilted away in this match, the Leipzig final and the US Open quarter final. Strange. Must have been mental more than anything as she beat everyone else and she did eventually beat Jana too.
The slice was the killer...especially if Mary had to go back to the same spot. It was a more vicious slice than Steffi. Watch how Jana uses the slice to get Mary caught in her feet and out of position. The strong serve also helped! Jana also waited on her forehand preparation to see which way Mary would move. Very tricky match up for Mary...similar to Hingis in some ways
Support Jana forever in our hearts And Marry also great performance whole carreer ✌️

Vielen Dank 🙏 Auf das Match habe ich gewartet 😊
Biggest title of Jana’s career at that point in time.
...absolutely right!
And 1 year later FINALLY her wimbledon title!
Yup - salty handshake at end.

Jana was a bad match up for Mary. This was her fifth straight win against her without even dropping a set.
How Mary able to Steffi Graf and Monica seles 2 very strong players to beat but not Jana novotna very complicated for Mary
