Never more a wordsmith than with new album.ENSOULMENT is a masterpiece par excellence and I was one of the luckiest people on the entire planet 30/09/2024... Manchester Apollo to see this wonderful ensemble of musicians.
So here's the weird thing @TheThe I read the lryics to 'Love Is Stronger Than Death' at my Father's funeral back in 1998 after he dropped down dead of a Cardiac at the age of 50 when I was in South America, and here we are many years later, after I used to (and still do) take a flask of coffee and a music mag (usually NME in the day) by his grave side and Some Days I Drink My Coffee By The Grave Of My Father....... Love it
Matt Johnson’s words are able to infuse subliminal thoughts to our solitary minds, enabling a structure of composure and acceptance of morals of life and death.
I've been in love with this band for over 30 years, and I think this line-up is the best incarnation of The The yet. Amazing players who complement each other perfectly. Can't wait to hear the rest of this record. If 30 years of being a fan has taught me anything, it's that it's always worth the (the) wait...
I am lost for words and adjectives to describe how much I have been looking forward to this album - I was not disapointed. Real music, real lyrics and pure poetry .... Thank you The The - Thank you Matt!!
Fabulous. Brimming with nostalgia and sadness for where things have ended up. And a brilliantly original composition that I can’t get out of my head. The The are a real national treasure, we are so lucky that MJ (and Friends) are properly back.
As a long time fan revelling in the poetic excellence of Matt Johnson, you have to accept that sometimes the stars align and their product is manifest. I am in awe.
It's an instant classic. Cliché to say it worth the wait but genuinely quite remarkable for him to come back with this. It's been on repeat all month. Every track is exceptional.
Omg. This is absolutely the weirdest thing to happen for a while. Today, I had a coffee sitting by William Blake’s grave in Bunhill Fields, up the road from where I live. He has a small stone, next to Daniel Defoe, they are next to one another, but separate from all the rest. There are seats right there. It’s a gorgeous space, so quiet, considering it’s in the City. How mad that this just popped up. I love The The, spent many a weekend off my head on assorted ‘sweets’ in the 80s n 90s listening to TT. The music now, is still as perfectly magical as the first time, and even better as I get older and wiser 🎉 (I was 17 in 1983)
Love it, Matt (and the rest of The The). Thank you, from the bottom of my bleeding heart, for continuing to release new music that matters. Your music is significant and stands the test of the passage of time. Pretty sure I speak for The The fans the world over when I say thank you. My thirst is once again quenched (for now)...
Your English teacher is a wonderful person with extremely good taste,if you haven't listened to ENSOULMENT yet please do, the whole album has "blown my mind".
Thank you Matt for breaking the long silence. Music is softer but the words still kicks. All european gigs are sold out, I get consolation on RUclips. Matt, we love you in France, come to us please.
Love this - so lyrically relevant as usual Matt is a genius… ‘The agents of malice, provocateurs in disguise using slithers of truth to sell the biggest of lies..’
I'm an American, and when I was about 21, The Soul Mining came out, the "New Wave" was all over the Los Angeles Radio, a buddy that worked at Record Shop gave me that Cassette, still to this Day I listen to it at least once a Month ( although it's NOT the Cassette, just the digital version) , truly a timeless classic... ANYTHING Matt does, is worth a listen.. this song is awesomely simple AND complex... Morrisey, Marc Almond and perhaps even Robert Smith are up there with Matt, but he finds MANY musicians to work with and THAT sets him apart from the rest.
I just heard this as a sponsored video on YT. First time I have ever let one play to the end. This is one fantastic song. The lyrics are brilliant. New fan and subscriber. Thank you.
I would love to share Risin' above the need. Cheers. See ya in Denver. I must say I stood front row at Naked Self tour. Our minds were blown the first song.
I want to say hello to the fellow fans... it's been a long lonely journey since the 80's, and nobody in (my) real life has ever heard of The The.... so it's nice to be in good company. I have considered Dusk one of the few perfect albums ever made... up there with Abby Road, Tapestry, Hunky Dory... less than ten in my list. This album is next level. Listening daily.... and trying to learn the chords.
24 years of waiting will end next Friday when our friendly local postie drops Ensoulment through the letterbox. Oasis reforming? Do me a favour, not fit to clean Matt's shoes. This is truly the musical event of this and several other years.
Mesmerising in music and message. One of. My ancestors John lived near the home of William Blake at the time of the Chartists meeting in 1845 in Lambeth at the time of the Cholera outbreak that took his wife. I only discovered this years after studying Blakes works and visiting my late parents in Felpham who lived a few hundred yards from Blakes house when he lived in Sussex. DNA is more powerful than we realise.
Anyone else hear “House of the Rising Sun” at the core of this song? Knowing Johnson, this is most likely no oversight or accident. Obviously this song’s vocal melodies, bells, and overall vibe, etc. differentiate it so it’s no straight-uo copy. However, I’d say that there is an argument to be made that it’s essentially, at its core, a sort of hybrid cover/re-imagining of that song. For the record, this isn’t a cruticism and doesn’t lessen my enjoyment of the tune. I really dig it! And while there is definitely a list of Matt Johnson songs that I don’t dig, it’s a very short list. I just hadn’t seen any comments mention this and thought it might be interesting to see if anyone hears it and discuss the choice. Ultimately, though, I’m just happy to have a new The The album!!!
Matt Johnson seems to have kept his mantle as one of the UK's finest Song-smiths. This is just magnificent. Long live The The.
Yep defo one of our greatest musical wordsmiths.
❤ that is a masterpiece
GENIUS
His voice is like my Port Wine 🍷😂😂😂
Never more a wordsmith than with new album.ENSOULMENT is a masterpiece par excellence and I was one of the luckiest people on the entire planet 30/09/2024... Manchester Apollo to see this wonderful ensemble of musicians.
Matt has returned in our hour of need.
Well said!

So good to see Matt Johnson back. A haunting beautifully evocative song that stands there with the best he’s written. Thank you.
Now we're talkin'. The first two singles were fine but this is top quality. Absolutely love this.
I just flew to Dublin to see them. It was everything I hoped it would be 🥰

As a long time fan revelling in the poetic excellence of Matt Johnson, you have to accept that sometimes the stars align and their product is manifest. I am in awe.

See you there!
You're TRIPLE lucky. I only saw them at Manchester Apollo and the gig literally blew my mind..... absolutely fantastic.
Phenomenal album - such a beautiful, warm and rounded sound with poetic lyricism! The BEST!
Absolutely fantastic. I wish I could garner more words, but I'm going to let it sink in for a few days.
My Adrenalin is curdling like cream waiting for this gig.
Little Bazza on fire! 🔥
This album is without doubt one of the best I've ever heard. It's simply fantastic.
It's an instant classic. Cliché to say it worth the wait but genuinely quite remarkable for him to come back with this. It's been on repeat all month. Every track is exceptional.
I couldn't agree more, every single track TOP drawer.

It's like new national anthem for our times.... Excellent show in Wolverhampton last month. Album of the year for me.
Thank you Matt for breaking the long silence. Music is softer but the words still kicks. All european gigs are sold out, I get consolation on RUclips. Matt, we love you in France, come to us please.

‘The agents of malice, provocateurs in disguise using slithers of truth to sell the biggest of lies..’
Big love to you Matt my lifelong friend and comfort.
