Awesome review as usual. Thanks for the feedbacks. Until now I wasn't sure how to upgrade my MK3S+ and very few youtubers have had an opportunity to talk about these upgrade kits.
Thank you for this most comprehensive reviews of the upgrade options I have for my MK3S+. From these results I'd say the 3.5S upgrade is practically a "no brainer" for anyone keeping their PRUSA. I also appreciate the consideration of selling the 3S+ if one is NOT going to upgrade to the 3.5S. For what the 3S+ can sell for plus the 3.9S/4S upgrade kit, one could easily purchase something like a P1S for overall less money and have a FAR more capable (especially paired with the AMS) and versatile printer. ESPECIALLY with Bambu's current Black Friday sale where the P1S/AMS combo is only $750, while a 3.9S/MMU3 upgrade is $800 and a 4S/MMU3 upgrade is $880. Subscription earned.
I ordered a Creality K1C, due to arrive today, but I will watch this while I wait, simply because you guys make the best 3D printing videos on RUclips. Thank you for all your hard work!
All their reviews are great. They don't give you the same boring talking points, they actually test the devices and give the low down on what could/should be fixed or added.
Thank You very much for this review. This is exactly what I was hoping for as I am considering an upgrade for my MK3S. MK4S kit will most probably be the winner.
The MK3.5S kit is pretty awesome. Since my MK3S+ was a kit and my first good printer…. I’m kinda partial to it. I’m glad to keep it going. I had replaced the part cooling fan with a Fystec blower fan in a pinch (Amazon) when the original wore out and I didn’t want to wait on shipping. The Fystec fan would not pass calibration tests. I believe it was the lower rpm tests that failed. So I put a new Prusa blower fan in and it worked.
thanks so much for making this super detailed video! It really helped me understand what the upgrade involves and all the benefits. But honestly, when I saw how close the upgrade cost is to getting a whole new machine, I had to think twice about it. After using my MK3 for a year, I've kinda gotten used to its speed, and both upgrading and buying a new printer seem like hefty expenses. So, I guess it's time to look at other options. I'm thinking of selling my MK3 before Black Friday to save up for a T1Pro. For around the same price, it might just offer a better experience overall.
The mere fact that buying a 3d printer from Prusa is upgradable makes it a worthwhile investmemt. I own a Snapmaker A350 which is basically just a waste of space.
The mere fact that Sovol is about to release the SV06 Ace makes it really hard to justify paying $300 for an upgrade (MK3.5) that lacks a lot of features. The other upgrades don't even make sense
@@elleryfg7853 Not really, if you upgrade to the three-point five or 3.9 it’s a dead end. Prusa does not supply the parts or even sell the necessary components for the extruder to upgrade to MK4
@@elleryfg7853 the MK 3.5 doesn’t lack any features. Extruder? It’s not meant to have the extruder and you don’t need the extruder to still get great first layers and MK4 speed.
@@Eric_In_SF It lacks a lot of features, one the most important ones is the bed leveling which would still be done using the terrible inductive sensor.
@@Eric_In_SF For the other upgrades we are talking about over $500. With that money you can get a whole new printer, enclosed, Core XY just better overall. To keep throwing money at these Prusa printers is a waste BUT if people are just interested in playing with their printers assembling, disassembling, upgrading ect ect instead of actually printing I guess it makes sense. There's two kinds of people in the 3D printing community, those who use them as tools and those who use them as hobbies, AKA toys. If you're in the first group, Prusa's don't make sense anymore. I'm in that group, used to be a Prusa user. Not anymore
Although I could never afford to pay the Prusa tax, I do very much appreciate that they have a curated upgrade experience...many budget printers from Creality, Sovol, and others can be upgraded and modded and changed until they barely resemble what they looked like on day one, but it's very much a choose-your-own adventure kind of upgrade, as opposed to a Prusa upgrade kit with the exact right parts and instructions on how to use them.
First of all: Thank you very much for your test and all that work. It's good that you can upgrade Prusa printers. Although that is not unique. Especially for open source printers, there is a lot to be found online. Not from the manufacturer and not as easy to apply as Prusa delivers although. Where it does hurt me is the price of Prusa's better upgrade kits. For the amount of the Prusa upgrade I have a complete K1C. A core XY printer with a casing that can print ABS and other difficult materials without any problems. So a more mature technique for the same price. I realize that a discussion contest about Prusa/Bambu/Creality is meaningless. Each printer of the mentioned brands has specific and proven advantages. In summary, for the amount that Prusa asks for an upgrade, I can also buy a second, even better printer and have two printers! The choice is up to the buyer. Again Aurora: Thank you for your never stopping effort to help the 3d community with your informative reviews!
Thank you for your review! Since Prusa still shows the industry what solid upgrading after years means I still consider buying a used MK3 and doing the MK3.5 Upgrade. It*s foreseeable that printers like the Bambu A1 or P1S simply cannot provide such an upgrade path due to glued parts and a product that is not designed to be disassembled buy the user. It's impressive how good that MK3.5 is, especially in terms of speed! *Although I wonder how that particular upgrade holds up to a new Sovol SV06 ACE or Bambu A1.* With all the mods available a Prusa could easily get another extruder or hotend later (like the Sovol should) and the simplicity of design and available documentation makes that brand somehow still a bit special. But the price of that Sovol machines is also more than appealing. For basically the price of that upgrade you get a whole new printer ... That makes it not easy to choose why your videos are so valuable, I guess. Keep doing this! Cheers!
Hihi Auroratech, are you going to have a review coming for the Sovol SV06 Ace? Since it launches in 7 hours, some people told me Sovol typically have problems with early units so wanted to see a review first. Thank you.
I just completely my mk4->mk4s upgrade. It's the purple prusa! I built the printer and I had no idea it was the old screen. The injection part wasn't going to fit anyway. But I wasn't planning on it since I wanted it purple. But I thought I could use the back. Turns out the back only works with the injection molded front and there is no stl for it. Joy! But holy crap I can't believe how much cleaner my prints are. Not that my PETG prints were bad before, but they are sooooo clean now! I'm currently working on the MMU2->3 upgrade for my Mk3s+. I'm considering updating it to a 3.5s. It doesn't get much use because it's slow and much poorer quality. Currently the mk3s+ is useless because of the mmu2. It flashes all green. That's the known power bug issue. But I have it plugged into USB power. Did my USB power adapter die on me? lol So I can't use it. Hopefully the new power board will fix that. I'm also not looking forward to being forced to the newer mk3 firmware with the crappy thermal model that doesn't work. So just for that reason alone I might upgrade to 3.5.
Nice review. A very good reason to invest in a Prusa printer, if you can afford one. I am reminded of Terry Pratchett's Commander Vimes boot theory. A noble will buy a pair of boots for $50, and it will last 3 generations. A poor person can only afford a cheap pair, and in the same time will have spend over a $100's, and still have wet feet.
What about the "other" MK3.5 upgrade? (Converting the MK3S/+ to Klipper and running input shaping with an accelerometer). It would be interesting to see what a 20 dollar, less if you already have a spare Raspberry Pi, upgrade could do.
One thing that is not mentioned here, is at least in my experience, the 3.5 printer generates WAY more heat than the original MK3S+. Perhaps its not as noticeable in open air applications, but my enclosed unit made the enclosure so much noticeably hotter that I was concerned it was going to burn up. With the electronics board being so hot to the touch I pulled an extra fire extinguisher out. That is with the PSU on the outside of the enclosure, I don't have exact numbers but it increased inside temps of my ambient enclosure by about 10F or more depending on how long I was printing, and that was with PLA.
I started with a MK2 which I upgraded overtime to a MK3S. It was the best choice when it came out, but I recently bought a SOVOL SV08 for as much as an upgrade to the MK4 would cost. It's a giant step forward from my MK3S and I hope it will eventually become a cheap tool changer (following in the foot steps of youtube channel teaching tech). The only thing I wish it had was the force sensor in the toolhead to get perfect first layers automatically.
It is hard not to love the SV08. It is corexy, with Klipper (and Klipper/Mainsail integrates so smoothly with Orca Slicer, it is ridiculous), and it has Voron roots. Because of shipping issues -- due to where I live in the US -- I cannot easily get one. If not for that, I would have one already. Still, I'm not sure the SV08 outlasts a Prusa.
@@christopherorman5769 My printing is infrequent, I was still using one side of my first PEI bed and it had no noticeable damage other than where the purge string went. But yes, it will be interesting to see durability.
Wonderful video again! With all the printers i have and have had, the most reliable has always been my prusas. Upgrades for me i find as a fun way to spend some time, the MK4Ss are great, and upgrading my older ones just made a good old printer even better.
"which was once consider a fast printer a while back" OOF, since we started our printer stuff ages ago, the Mk3 is our _newest_! 👀 It's crazy how fast things have accelerated since then.
Can you explain why you would want to sell mk3+ and purchase a brand new mk4s? Are there any major differences at that point that you're missing out on. I only thought it was the 0.9 stepper motors at that point. Thanks
I have the Mk3, mk3S+, mk4 and mk4S on my print farm and the best of all is my mk3S+ definitely longer than the mk4S but the quality is definitely better and even if I lower the speeds of the mk4S the quality is not as good... I don't plan on parting with my mk3S+ for the moment
A tiny bit of caution for anyone out there that has a 3/S/+ that's considering an upgrade: there's currently no upgrade path from the 3.5S to the 3.9/4/4S in the form of a kit. It is likely still possible to do by purchasing the individual parts off of Prusa's site, but I haven't had time to verify if that's even possible. Hopefully they'll offer a kit in the near future.
Holy shit, Prusa hooked you UUUUUUUUUUUUUP with those various versions. How many of your own printers did you upgrade? All the faster to build to Robo-Alpaca Army!
I have three MK3S+, two of them have been upgraded to the 3.5S and 3.9S, as you saw in the video. I still have one MK3S+ with a bad print head, but now I have an extra print head from the one upgraded to 3.9S, I will upgrade the final MK3S+ to the MK3.5 as well.
Thanks for the review. Maybe I have a bad heatblock on the mk3s, but it tends to leak every month or so. So imo the 3,5 is not the smartest choice, as it keeps the stock extruder, wich has issues. Ant the price of the upgrades is just way too much. Yoy can get a P1S for the price of the upgrades. Or an A1
I can't justify paying that kind of money to "upgrade" to a printer that lacks features available in printers that cost less than the upgrade kit. I get that Prusa has a following and if someone wants to buy these upgrades I have no problem with it, I just won't be doing it myself. My 3s+ will stay a 3s+ and I'll get a Sovol or a Bambu A1 or something instead. Having said that, I appreciate the thorough and thoughtful review and the video is, as always, well done.
I think that's the beauty of it. The cost and DIY aspect of upgrading are certainly not for everyone and that's fine! I appreciate the fact that I even have this option to begin with, even if I do not plan to exercise it in the immediate future. Running a fleet of MK3S+, MK4 and P1/A1, all reliable printers with different performances, I still enioy tinkering and would love to explore the upgrade paths in the future just for the fun of it. If I see the value in one of them, I might upgrade the fleet to pass that value on to my customers or technicians
Prusa should make an affordable Mk3. Like $349. Does Prusa think that it will cannibalize from it's newer printers? Or is it afraid of devaluing the brand?
When I contact prusa to see about what parts I need to be printed. They tell me I must look at the manual.I'm figuring out what parts I need. Wow, prusa cant give a direct link for their upgrade parts. Do you have a direct link for the parts that need to make the upgrade. Thanks
The only problem is that these particular upgrades are complete dead ends. I upgraded to the 3.5 and immediately wanted a 3.9 but Prusa doesn’t sell to the public certain parts for the nextruder so it’s a complete dead end upgrade. Now I’m stuck trying to sell the whole thing and I can’t get an offer for more than I paid for the upgrade alone :/ however I can donate it to my local school and right off the thousand dollars I paid for it initially.
I can actually disassemble the kit and put it back as an MK 3S and get the same $200 for it and then sell my upgrade for 150 and make more money with 10 times the hassle. Prusa Let people down with these upgrades.
yeah I was hoping to see a little more quality improvements on the 3.5. I don't mind it being slower. But the poor quality is why the 3s+ mostly collects dust.....until the the stupid mmu2 has pretty much killed it. I do plan to use it more though. So I guess maybe I should just do it. I am disapointed that prusa doesnt' offer choices in filament. I have an orange machine. Why isn't orange filament an option? Most of my PETG is purple or it was black and included with the MMU3 new and MMU3 upgrades. (I'm also kind of disapointed that the MMU3 is always black unless you go custom like I did) Even my mk4s MMU3 is purple. When I say it's all purple I'm not kidding! The only black parts are internal extruder parts with the PCCF required for the MMU. Honestly I could probably use the PCCF fan shroud since the huge fan covers it anyway.
Assuming you're referring to the old MK3, Bambulab's midrange coreXY printer (P1) is in the same boat and that's pretty new. & they're worse than the MK3 screen in practice in terms of navigation .
@@LauraBrown1 Sorry I don’t mean to offend onyone but that is my view compared with other printers. They would look better if they would stop using that horrible orange.
@@fredblogsthey also have black and you can print it in any color that you want, do you want green? Silver? Carbon Fiber, pink, red, purple with with polka dots, gray, which color?

For some people, the upgrade process itself is part of the experience. Similar to the kits. I'm pretty sure everyone knows you can get a decent printer for less money especially if it's made somewhere that things cost less to manufacture.
If your trying to compare Prusa printers to the A1. You must be drunk. Enjoy losing your privacy and have ZERO upgrade path. I'm glad I donated my A1 for destruction, made a great video.
Be smart? Bambu Labs and all the patents they filed that were built off of the RepRap - open source community's work! Do a search on their patents. I wont support them but your free to do so.
True but on the other hand, a lot of people want a new Prusa printer, and don't have room for the old printer (or just don't want anything in their fleet to use the old connectivity, etc). So for them, upgrading an old one saves a few dollars and saves a bit of waste.

Did you use the input shape profiles?
Yes, by default the 3.5S and 3.9S profiles are with input shaper.
When I contact prusa to see about what parts I need to be printed. They tell me I must look at the manual.I'm figuring out what parts I need. Wow, prusa cant give a direct link for their upgrade parts. Do you have a direct link for the parts that need to make the upgrade. Thanks
surprising to me is that there is no 3.5 to 3.9 upgrade kit, for people that cant afford the $500 upgrade, and would prefer two smaller ones

That THE reason why I have Prusa printer …
👍🏻👍🏻
Prusa is such a dinosaur I can't believe they are still selling printers with tiny lcd screens.
I'd like to have that LCD screen, I've got 2 printers with no screen at all and all I would need is stop / pause and tilt calculate.
Assuming you're referring to the old MK3, Bambulab's midrange coreXY printer (P1) is in the same boat and that's pretty new. & they're worse than the MK3 screen in practice in terms of navigation .
I choose Bambu Lab A1 without any upgrades. It works better than any MK3, and MK4 upgrades and it's cheaper. Prusa is just outdated, and overpriced.
and if you chose that last year you would've been returning it. Cheaper on safety I guess.
You’re doing a marvellous job but Prusa printers look cheap and old fashioned with their printed parts and they are not cheap.
Why do you think so? For me Prusa's printers and printings look the best on the market. Compare to Bambu and others Chinese printers...
@@SpectraV3i If you read it again I don’t mention colour.
@@fredblogs :D okay :D
Wow, who in their right mind would pay $249 for an "upgrade" when you can get a whole printer for that much the A1 mini for $200 or the A1 for $299..
…and if they go for that much secondhand, why not sell it and do the same.
Yep
People who have a fixed workflow with a large collection of existing V6 nozzles and build plates which you cannot get on an A1 mini, like Diamondback nozzles.
Can you explain why you would want to sell mk3+ and purchase a brand new mk4s? Are there any major differences at that point that you're missing out on. I only thought it was the 0.9 stepper motors at that point. Thanks
@@mikecrane2782 because it is upgradeable, open source, 24/7 live chat customer support, and more.
First
Folks please don't waste 500 bucks and hours of labour upgrading these dinosaurs, you can get a whole much better A1 printer for less money, be smart.
@@omgfrankie you are beyond wicked. Not in the good way btw
Be smart? Bambu Labs and all the patents they filed that were built off of the RepRap - open source community's work! Do a search on their patents. I wont support them but your free to do so.
If I can’t upgrade or repair it myself I don’t want it. I especially don’t want some proprietary spyware like a bamboo on my bench.
wow why would one waste the money on a upgrade. For a few dollars more one can buy new with better printer
True but on the other hand, a lot of people want a new Prusa printer, and don't have room for the old printer (or just don't want anything in their fleet to use the old connectivity, etc). So for them, upgrading an old one saves a few dollars and saves a bit of waste.
may be some people do like the assembly process and can have a different opinion
