  • With extremely low success rates for hunters and the ability to travel far and wide, wolves are one of the hardest animals to hunt in North America -- talk about the road less traveled! But wolf management in Idaho is an important part of Kate Small's mission as a hunter. Watch her Journey unfold as she scours the backcountry for signs of wolves and experiences the heartbreak that wolf hunters know all too well.

It’s interesting how terrains and topography change the hunt. In Southeast Alaska one of the ways wolves were traditionally harvested is via trap lines below the tide line. They will chew their feet off if they are trapped too long.

@@jackslagle2019 I've been a trapper 47 years. 5 wolves caught, countless coyotes, fox, beaver, pine marten.....it doesn't happen "cupcake". If the bone is broken, they will sometimes twist the foot off, but they don't chew it off.

@@MuskratOutdoors ahh. Well, you’ve got a lifetime of experience on me. You’ll have to excuse me being a smart Alec something I’ve always heard though up here is that they will chew their feet off and when I saw the toes or half a paw in my foot old, I assume that’s what they did. I’m pretty green to this though. Like I finally got my first wolf a couple of weeks ago. I’m over the footholds I prefer the snares.

They are very right that Wolves are the hardest animals to hunt that is why Idaho has a year around one season on them. Not enough people really want to hunt them to be honest. They are growing in population even with the year around open season.

It's good that some people are hunters, "lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee" (Deuteronomy 7:22/ Exodus 23:29)
