that's such a shock, the bridge will need to be completely rebuilt, sympathies to the families of the workers who are waiting for news
Well, if it was that easy to collapse, then it was junk anyway. It needs improvment
I would say it was easy to destroy the bridge, you had an enormous container ship lose control and drift directly into one of the bridges support pillars. Compromising the bridge above the support and cascading into the bridge’s total destruction.
Oh no! Gonna be china sabotaged the cargo ship that caused the disaster. Any condolences to those victims and families in that tragic accident.
@@buddha199115Blaming China without evidence isn't helpful. The proper authorities will investigate when the time is right. For now, efforts are being focused on those who are still missing. Have some respect.
@@buddha199115 If that were the case they’d probably have done it during rush hour instead
Search and rescue? I guarantee it became a search and recovery a half hour after it collapsed because of the time of year and temperature of the water. Truly horrific and so sorry for the families of those lost.
We've let shipping companies get away with paying workers poorly and over working them, so "shareholders" can keep more profits. Businessmen instead of engineers are in charge of companies, and make decisions based on getting a big annual bonus instead of safety. This is going to happen more and more.
There hasn't even been an investigation yet, so we don't know if this was due to an accident on board that knocked out power, sabotage, negligence, or any other number of possibilities. Let's wait until they've pulled all the bodies out of the water and established the facts before assigning blame. I agree with the spirit of what you are saying, but it diminishes the argument when we jump to this conclusion without any information whatsoever.
I drive on it everyday to get back home from work. I was there yesterday and it was surreal hearing it's gone when I woke up
It's a massive bridge and watching it crumble was surreal. What does your commute look like now? So many people will be impacted for years while they do a rebuild.
Hopefully, those who were on or near the bridge can be rescued. If ship touted a "May Day" where was the communication dispatch in place to get the workers and drivers on the bridge alerted to get away from the area? Don't know the workings of maritime but should there be flashing lights or something when a ship gets too close to a bridge. There was at least 10-15 minutes before the impact to save anyone in the area. One could see at least 4-5 cars and a few semi trucks wee on the bridge before impact.
Authorities were focused on stopping the flow of access on both ends of the bridge to prevent more people from getting harmed. They were probably hoping that the traffic would have time to get off of it before the collision. As for maintenance crews already present, they probably didn't have enough time to receive the warning as authorities were busy with everyone else.
It’s unfortunate, but depending on how spread out the police where it could have been only blocked off for a few minutes not giving the cars enough time to flow off. Mind you from what I have seen it’s not clear yet how long the police were actually there before impact.
I’m seeing four works vehicles with flashing lights on the deck as it collapses. @@scbtripwire
Watch the video....the ship blacked out less than a minute before the impact...wasn't 10 or 15 minutes...
@@scbtripwire they probably didn't have the protocols in place for maintenance crews to receive word in time. Hopefully after this incident, protocols for this type of situation become common place. Perhaps the crew supervisor should be required to monitor marine emergency radio traffic and harbor controllers should be aware of maintenance work being done and have a direct communication line to maintenance supervisors.
if 6 people are missing, and divers are searching, but they don't believe they are trapped in vehicles, how can they be looking for survivors, after 8 hours?
Cuz they haven't found them. So they are missing...probably dead but they haven't found the bodies so they are missing. Common sense is hard sometimes
@@savjakob7838 Mr. common sense why not try using some. The operative words here are divers and survivors. Incase you are not sure divers are used for underwater recovery not surface recovery. That would be a different discipline of search and rescue, and dependent on where the people are. Now instead of going straight to insults try suggesting that these potential survivors my have been able to make it to shore but unable to be found by search and rescue yet. The likelihood of all eight surviving is very small. With that said they need to be treated as potential survivors until bodies have been recovered and confirmed deceased or sufficient time has elapsed that survival is impossible.
@@savjakob7838 they say the divers are looking for survivors trapped. that is what I am clarifying. Victims families would latch on to words like those.

What the heck was that ship doing under the left side of the bridge instead of passing under the center of the bridge?
it seems like it lost power.
Lost power twice.
Oh, no!😞
that bridge crumpled like a tin can...
Bridges are heavy.
Made in china
I don't get this criticism of the bridge..a bridge is made to withstand weight and the posts are made to withstand storms and small boat collisions. This is a a loaded, just one of those shipping containers that are stacked weighs like 8500lbs empty, loaded probably closer to 25-30k. Literally hundreds of thousands of pounds of freight + the ship itself, fuel, etc. I'm amazed it didn't cut right through.
@@rayzala1393 I always thought momentum was pretty common knowledge but comment sections never cease to amaze and disappoint me.
A fully loaded container ship of that size travelling at 8 knots has the same kinetic energy as a fully fuelled 737 travelling at 500 KPH
The ship has a mass of 86,000,000 kg and is travelling at 8 knots which gives a kinetic energy of 726 MegaJoules of energy
The jet weighs 70000 at 500 KPH has 667nMegaJoules
Very very sad
The water is not freezing, it is approx 9C. So cold but not freezing.

NOBODY MANNING THE ANCHOR...THAT IS WHAT YOU USE WHEN YOU LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR SHIP ..THE ANCHOR.
It was moving too fast for that probably and had enough lot of inertia
That's what I was thinking
Anchor doesn’t work with that much force behind it while moving. It’ll be dragged along the floor. Unfortunately once power was lost there wasn’t much that could be done.
I think the anchor was down thats why the ship turned so fast towards the bridge.
If the ship had issues before leaving and did not have an escort? I know a smaller cargo ship but there were reports of the ship having issues long before this event.
There’s more than 6 people missing, I can’t imagine the tragedy. My heart goes out to them. 😢
The full video showed the ship turning sharply right towards the bridge. I can't see how a power failure caused that.
Apparently anchor(s) were dropped on one side which would cause it to swing around according to basic physics. Anyway you and I are both just armchair experts. Let’s wait and see what the findings of the investigation is before jumping to conclusions.
the crazy thing is people are stuck on one side without that bridge😮
The crew is vital here the moment the officer issued a mayday call. They should drop their 2 anchors
If that bridge was a major one, it was long over due to construct a new one, that bridge was really weak and poorly designed, the pillars should have been given more protection and the spans are actually made that so that only one portion collapse, but with that just one impact took down 3 spans, which means it was very weak.
I heard they had recently reinforced the bases of the pillars, but this ship was so huge it hit the pillar anyway. 😢
Seriously!!!!
The force of the ship was something not predicted back then.
seemed to be just fine until it was hit by a ship.
Wow that going to be a major problem and going to take a long time to fix
Rescue, recover and accountability, but your presidential already said he’d pay for the rebuild. Why would he say that before the rescue part. RAT.
Well it will take about 15 years before a new bridge replaces the collapsed one
US doesn't have money that much to build a bridge faster.

I bet it is up in 2 weeks

Congress just passed a Bill that Biden has been trying to pass for ages. That's why Marjorie Taylor Greene is going to attempt to oust Chairman Mike Johnson. Weird that the bridge was named after the man that wrote the Star Spangled Banner eh?

This cargo ship is 100% at fault and responsible for 100% of the costs for not only the victims of this incident, the whole bridge, and the labour behind this bridge. They deserve this penalty. You just made these people homeless and carless from debt.
hundreds of thousands barely buys a house right now, let alone an entire freaking bridge
