- A third successful encounter between orphaned albino elephant calf Khanyisa and her future mom Lundi, with Jabulani in their company too. As soon as Khanyisa saw the two big elephants in the early morning, she ran anxiously to them. Lundi welcomed her excitedly and vocally and quickly moved her leg aside for access for Khanyisa. It was beautiful to see how fast they settled down together.
Lundi is slowly becoming used to the idea of another baby needing her love and continues to instinctively move her leg to provide her with the space Khanyisa needs to access her teat.
At one stage Khanyisa approached Jabulani to suckle, who first moved his leg to block her, but then realised and made way for her to explore his underbelly. It did not take long for Khanyisa to realise she needed to swap over to Lundi to find a teat!
Overall it was a successful morning, and we are happy with what we have seen so far. Everything is calm, and it is beautiful to hear Lundi and Khanyisa communicating.
Elephant carers Kevin and Clever shared some insights and their feelings with Adine at the end of the clip.

Her little run to them in the morning and them turning, seeing her, and reaching out their trunk to say good morning our sweetie is maybe the most wonderful image ever.
Lundi feels comfortable with Khanyisa suckling if Jabulani’s standing guard...on lookout. They seem to have deep feelings for each other. It’s so great that she and Jabulani are brought out, alone, to share the little one, together! Or am I just hopelessly anthropomorphic? I mean, they get to have her to themselves for a bit, &enjoy her without distraction. I notice, tho, they are very Democratic....Lundi doesn’t seem jealous of Bubi& Klaserie’s relationship with this new little one.
I’m hopelessly in love with these kindhearted thinkers.💗🐘💗🌿🌱Their capacity to love is boundless.
looks like Khanyisa and Lundi really like each other
Oh Khanyisa is so excited she runs towards them 😍 and then she hides behind a carer because she realised she is scared 😝
Precious meetings, and you the carers and the older elephants are all so patient with the young child.
Sweet moments we will always treasure!
So cute to see her "checking out" Jabulani.
It was so sweet!
It is so amazing how compassionate, open and accepting these older orphans are w/ the babies. As I have learned, this doesn't happen in the wild, adopting into an established herd. These are such great and noble characters; they have been through so so much.
Awwww Lundy loves the baby.🥰 Jubilani is so calm.
So cute!
Lundi looks behind her so she knows we’re baby sunshine is before she backs up!
Just like driving! Lol
Love you all
My distress for my day!
Thanks for the explanations at the end. I was wondering why it was important to have Jabulani, specifically, there with Lundi. I didn’t know that adult cows and bulls can develop a special bond.
Our pleasure!
Touching, it did not take Lundi long to accept Khanyisa, Jabulani too. Khanyisa felt welcomed quickly ., I think animals just pick up more than we give them credit ! Very happy for Khanyisa!! This was very touching in so many ways to watch ! 🤗💕💖
It was a very beautiful integration to watch! They are incredible animals!
@@herdelephantorphanage 😌they are! Bless you!!😘
I love Kahnyisa's story, how you folks introduced her to the herd and how well everyone has adjusted to the new baby.
Oh boy, Khanysia got a wonderful nanny for Easter💝♥️
Nothing beats the run towards the big guys with ears flapping to the maximum.
Very impressed! You have no less than three persons shepherding here...close enough but distant enough for the elephant to develop their bond! There at the water tank Lundi gently using her turk to encourage Khanyisa to follow her was very touching. Even though her teets are dry, if possible perhaps placing one of Khanyisa's daily milk bottles in close to them as you give it to her...might help encourage mothering behavior, and suckle response from the little one. Just love your work, thank you so very much for your passion...which isn't cheap, so Huge! thank you to all your supporters helping make your work possible!!!
She wants to suckle them so bad! That would be a good idea to put her bottle where she's searching!
Hi Frank - sorry to only see this now and reply so late. There is a fine line of overstepping our boundaries between the motherly function and our role. This was made clear a little while ago, when Adine got too close to Khanyisa when Bubi was there. Though it is a wonderful idea, we have to consider this! The next best thing is that we allow them to approach (if safe of course) to oversee when Khanyisa gets her milk bottle in the wild. With occasional tasting sessions too! :-)
I'm sure the HERD loves Adine and the carriers, but when it comes too that pink baby girl. They will protect her from anybody if they get too close when she is nursing off of her mother Lundi, or any of the others she nurse off of for comfort. Her bottles when she is with the HERD is always given in the sight of her family, and just too let Lundi know. That Khanyisa is getting the best and not being harmed. Adine and the keepers let her mama Lundi get a taste of her milk too. It's all very beautiful and done with such wisdom
Is interesting that Lundi has already showing her motherly side. She went into protecting mode immediately and would not leave Khanyisa out of her side
The caretakers there are so knowledgeable of elephants. I love watching your video's because you give such a close up view of all the elephants.
our carers have an underlying unspoken understanding of their elephant friends. Words can't describe it! :-)
she looked excited to see the little one
That is good. I am glad she welcomed the baby!
How was Lundi chosen? She's amazing with that little baby doll. If I didn't know she was an orphan, I'd think Lundi was her mama, the way she treats her.
Lundi got a chance to raise a girl since her only child is a boy Mambo. It's nice.
So tender and delicate process 👌😇
What a beautiful and timeless scene. The sun in the horizon, and an elephant baby nursing, with her guard standing by.
❤️ Thank You very much for the video.❤️ Love to see the little herd. And Jabulani! Interesting how Kevin describes Jabu and the relationship with Lundi. You can hear the respect and appreciation he and also Clever have for this beautiful animals. Special thanks to Kevin 👍 and Clever👍.
Thanks for the great comment - sorry we only seeing it now! Kevin, CLever and the entire elephant care team are awesome!
Sunshine is like “ who’s got the milk”
Always!
😆
Khahnyisa 😘😍🤗❤
Amazing love attention and patience with little elephant.
Thank you so much 🐘🐑🐕❤️😇🙏
I loved those days, so much!
So nice reminiscing again!
Love you all!
that lose piece of skin on Lundi's right ear is messing with my OCD lol
haha! Sorry about that!
Frostbite too funny.
I remember how the gorilla that knew sign language always wantex to be a mother. She expressed that regularly. She finally got to adopt some kittens, and that made her so happy. These elephants have the same desires. Now they have a baby to nuture.
They’ve already fallen in love with each other ❤️❤️🇦🇺
So much love, care, consideration and patience! Love your work . Love your dedication! Thank you! xoxoxox
Thank you for the lovely compliment!
How was Lundi chosen to be Khanyisa's adopted mother or did they choose each other?
Little lovely khaniysa
I think the caretaker’s shirt says Herd but it should say Hero.
What happened to Lundi's ear?
We don't know,, unfortunately. She was like that from the time she was originally rescued in Zimbabwe.
Wonderful for Khanyisa so importend to have a new mother who love Khanyisa very much and all the Herd love her.
🥰🥰
they have such healthy skin, plenty of collagen ...their skin wrinkles are so plump😁
Little beauty khaniysa
Do the other elephants of the herd each have their own carers, too?
Je revois toujours vos vidéos avec un énorme plaisir
Merci à toute votre équipe 🙏👍💐

Given the long gestation and a four year milk support for her baby, would a elephant mom find herself nursing two babies at the same time?
Not unless they are twins. If she got pregnant when her baby was 3, or 4, and still nursing. By the time the new baby comes which would be for a little over two years. The first baby would be weaned already.
Love to see all of this, I've ever seen a lost calf try to enter a few herd look for mother or milk but all violently rejected even a matriarch try to kill him. So the calf is prey for hyena the first night after separate from mum. How sad would be for the filming crew that couldn't intervene.
O wosh we could hear Kevin.
Do the females produce milk constantly.... or only when they have a baby ..
Is Jabulani the only bull in this herd?
Is it ok for the young ones to suckle on the elephant even though it is not her mother? Obviously it is but how does this supernatural power occur? It's very interesting 👍
It’s a matter of instinct and because the older female does not have a calf of her own, she is able to allow another calf to suckle. Even though there is no milk, it provides comfort and bonding to both elephants 🐘
It would be nice to hear the carers speak in their mother tongues with subscript translations. I think they would have a lot more to share if they have all the words necessary.
Can anyone tell me is the baby getting milk from her adopted mom or is it just comfort suckling??
우유는 나오지 않아요😅 편안함을 느끼려고 엄마젖을 찾는다🍼😊
It's comfort suckling.
In the wild, aren’t males run off? Would the females allow their calf’s such close contact with a male?
They are very intelligent animals so we can't compare this herd behavior with wild ones. They adapted to their unique situation and formed tight bonds with each other, the day this herd will set free the way they interact may change when males reach the must. Even now that they cannot be in must often the males wander away for short periods of time
U all just hanging around instead of just leaving them alone must be so confusing to them all. Either back off or keep the lil elephant.
