I got to meet this crew in person recently. The crew are all amazing people truly amazing. They said i could join them when i said i wanted to become a paramedic and i would do this otherwise saying something about an airmedic which imma look into very soon. This particular plane has had around 50 years of service and has flown through around 129 hurricanes before this.
There is an OLD video of NOAA crew flying a plane into a hurricane, crossing into the eye. It's all cool and looks calm until suddenly a coffee cup crosses the camera view, sideways at warp 5.
@@MrMeadfoot I couldn't find it ... it was short, black and white video, made by one of the passengers, not an official NOAA. Pre 2000 so it';s buried in the search engines.
Yeah this is being passed off as a Milton video but I remember seeing this exact one a few years ago. Nonetheless, it’s still what they experience……. And I have to take an anti-anxiety pill for every fight I take. These guys have balls most of us don’t.
The NOAA hurricane hunters fly the P-3 Orion, while the US Air Force flies the bigger C-130 and drops temperature and pressure buoys into the hurricane.
Ahh I was wondering about that. I was in a C130 hunter out of Biloxi everything was tied down even clipboards and pens. It's been 25 years or so I was like, wow everything has changed. Every piece that came loose would be equal to 30 min of paperwork. Leave it to NOAA lol
There was an attempt to fly into a storm that was likely to spawn a tornado, way back in the previous century. Radar showed the plane bouncing around like a yo-yo and then it was spat out the side. At one point, the pilot was sure he was going up and he was going down, upside down, really fast. Which it why they invented "Dorothy" and throw her (several of her) off a vehicle into the path of a tornado.
Without this for reminder we would literally be in the dark about Milton's path, its wind speeds, it's possible directions as well, and just so much more
You would think with these Super Hercules aircraft that are designed to withstand all kinds of abuse would come equipped with better seatbelts than non-hurricane flying commercial aircraft? Also, why is this crew not prepared for this type of turbulence by securing and tying equipment down and properly stowing personnel items and throwing their garbage away in something more cat 5 worthy than a plastic grocery bag?
They could go on a submarine, i wanna know what are the effects are underwater, the sound, and if a huricane, this strong creates a ginormous whirlpool too.
I just spent some time reading about this. Apparently they fly into the actual eye in a specially designed P-3 Orion aircraft, taking all kinds of meteorological measurements. Pilots are usually ex military with training in storm dynamics and meterology. Most turbulent flight you’ll ever ride on 😅
Guys, thanks for doing this, but grandma here wants to remind you that you need to clean your room. And next time you go up, try a little velcro to keep things tied down. Love you.
