  • NOAA sends teams of scientists and meteorologists into the eye of storms to gather crucial data to save lives.
    Experience intense, unique, and sometimes dangerous moments with scientists working in the field, as they explain first-hand the kinds of risks they take to find answers. There's so much more to being a scientist than being stuck in a lab. Watch every Friday for new episodes of Science in the Extremes.

    Meet the Crew: Jessica Williams, NOAA Hurricane Hunter

    “As one can imagine, working with hurricanes is anything but predictable. ‘Flight tracks, plans and objectives often change in flight, so we need to be prepared to discuss whether these changes are safe,’ says Williams. The idea of safely surveying hurricanes almost seems like a contradiction, but the NOAA Aircraft Operations Center team has made it standard operating procedure.”

    This was very interesting. However, I feel that it just scratched the surface and left me wanting more information. I would really like to see a longer version that shows what it is like to fly into a hurricane and see the crew in action, what roles they play and what data they collect.

    I seriously dream of this job.
    Although I don't really have the courage to bear the sense of that much danger.
    But this job is phenomenal and threatening and satisfying all at the same time.

    Has a plane ever gone down directly from a storm?

    • @ImSorryYouFoundThis
      @ImSorryYouFoundThis 6 лет назад +13

      from a storm? Yes lots, from a hurricane? probably not. hurricanes are actually quite safe to fly in as the pilot can tell where the winds are coming from and steer against it whereas a storm will have winds from all directions

      A lot yes, however these hurricane hunters? No. However there was a very close call with one of these aircraft in the 90s I believe where they lost some engines in the middle of a hurricane, there are documentaries about it on RUclips I think

    • @MrCordycep
      @MrCordycep 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah, microbursts are pretty horrible things and have taken down several aircraft. Ice forming on the wings of aircraft has also causing the plane to lose lift has also caused a few crashes too. If you are interested in these sorts of things, Air Crash Investigators/Mayday is an excellent matter-of-fact television program that covers this sort of topic.

      Parachutes are not built for those wind-speeds. You would be surprised at how little wind-speed it takes to break them.

    I wonder why do Americans build their houses with wood and not bricks and concrete as the rest of the world. Is like fun for them that their houses are been destroyed by tornados and hurricanes.
