This album made Kendrick the only Pulitzer Prize winner in Hip Hop history, and one of the only non classical artists to ever win one. Incredible album.
@RockLee-q1g Jazz isn't considered as classical music. And, most of the Pullitzer Prize winners for music, have always been given to classical artists, some jazz artists and it would be more correct to say Kendrick has been the only Hip Hop Artist to receive a Pullitzer.
The concept of this album is actually extremely interesting and i dont think most people realize. At the start we hear "is it wickedness, is it weakness? You decide, are we gonna live or die?" Every song after that goes from wickedness to weakness. For example DNA is showcasing Kendricks wickedness while YUH his weakness. Same with Element, Feel etc. Now the most interesting part: if you play the album in reverse Kendricks wickedness gets the best of him and at the end he dies after being shot in a setup (BLOOD). But if you play it normally he survives to tell the story, eventually overcoming his struggles before ending the album with Duckworth.
You were right, Top Dawg discovered Kendrick and is the head of TDE the label that Kendrick was signed to. Kendricks dad used to work at KFC and Top Dawg was a gang banger. Top would go to that KFC a lot and Kendricks dad would always be nice to him and give him free chicken. But at some point Top got desperate in the streets and went to rob that KFC and when he did instead of killing Kendricks dad as a witness he spared him.
This album really shows Kenny's versatility. He can really dabble into any vibe of production and make it work. This album is definitely a fan favourite and cemented as a household name for sure
Pulitzer prize album winner . first time in the prize's history that the award was given to an artist outside of the classical or jazz community. He made history already

Fear is one of his best songs conceptually. First verse is from the perspective of him when he’s 7 and it’s his mother speaking to him. So what he fears is basically his mom. Next verse is his fears of dying when he’s 17 growing up in Compton. Third verse is his fears when he’s 27 and has hit super stardom. So the song in general is the evolution of fear throughout his life as he’s grown. I guarantee it’ll grow on you more and more with further listens. It’s a fan favorite
You’re absolutely right. This is Kendrick’s darkest album besides his most recent, Mr Morale and the big steppers. In the DAMN album, he talks about being paranoid, his trust issues, morality and questioning his faith in god when there’s chaos in his life (i think he said 2017ish was a rough period for him.)
The meaning behind "aint nobody praying for me" is referring to his Grandmother who died recently when making this album. Now that she is gone he feels like there is nobody who is truly praying for him anymore
Kendrick got the nickname "Kung-Fu Kenny" from Don Cheadle's character in the movie Rush Hour 2 who was a Black dude from Compton that was a master martial artist. It's also the reason why Don Cheadle is in the video for "DNA."
Top Dawg was actually the owner of the record label Kendrick was under, Top Dawg Entertainment. That’s why Kendrick says 30 years later his father and top dawg meet again in a recording studio reaping their benefits.
one of Kendricks best works, and the fact that you can play the track list in reverse and it tells a different story is next level, and you guys should really check out MF DOOM. his Madvillainy and MM..Food albums are classics.
the biggest accolade this album got was it won the Pulitzer Prize for music, making history as the first non-classical or jazz artist to win the honor.
Y'all caught on to the reversed sounds in the songs very early on-it is very much hinting at something. Just remember, what happens on Earth stays on Earth! / We gon' put it in reverse.
I think Kendrick said it was his best during the promo media tour when it was just coming out, so it makes sense as to why he said that. Even if hardcore fans, critics, and myself don't think it's his best, it's still one of the greatest of all time. He's THAT GOOD. I'm glad that y'all thought it was as good as its reputation. It's a perfect balance between artistry and commercial hits.
@@SergioM473Honestly 🤣🤣 I keep seeing Drake fans trying to compare their discographies and it’s like why even bother! Kendrick is a fourth dimensional being comparatively. I don’t get why some people think songs are only good if you can play them in the club like there are more vibes to be explored!
I also cried my first time hearing FEEL😅 It’s such a beautiful, smooth instrumental but he comes on rapping with so much passion so you can really here what he’s saying. That combined with those raw and relatable lyrics just combines for a perfect song
Great reaction as usual guys! Kendrick really is the definition of a true artist, everything he creates has so much emotion, depth and layers and he's so versatile with the vibes and styles he's able to use to convey his messages. 👑❤

Best uk reaction I’ve seen to this your spot on with the story about duckworth one of the best albums of all time to think it wasn’t as loved when it was released but lots would say this is their favourite Kendrick
Top Dawg used to come to the chicken shop that kendricks dad worked at all the time. His dad knew who he was, because he ran things in the streets in some compacity back then... Kendricks dad would throw in a couple extra's every now and then with his food because of this. One day, Top Dawg came in to rob the place, and like you said, kendricks dad talked him out of it. He listened because of how Kendricks dad would treat him. 20 years later, kendrick is 21/22, has been signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, and yup...Top Dawg and Kendricks father meet again.
Also- you and your dad legitimately have the best reactions to hip hop music on youtube. It's just wholesome to see, anytime your videos drop I sort of get an extra reminder on these days to just call my dad or try and go see him and talk for a while. I'm 30, my dads 66 now, and there really isn't anything better than just having a common bond over something with your dad. You and your dad really know a lot about sonics and beats and it's awesome that he pays attention to the lyrics and follows along.
A cool thing about this album is Kendrick said it was designed to be played in reverse. It shows the duality of who he is, it was rereleased not long after it came out in reverse order. The album has a whole different vibe on the reverse version and it once again just speaks to Kendrick's mastering of his craft. He's one of the GOATs
Yeah you were pretty close with that story from Duckworth! Anthony “Top Dawg” is the owner of TDE “Top Dawg Entertainment” the label that Kendrick was formerly signed to and Ducky is Kendricks father who used to work at KFC! Before becoming the owner of a record label, Top Dawg used to be a gang banger and would rob places for money and Kendricks father knew about his reputation and would always give Anthony free chicken to get on his good side and it worked as he spared Kendricks father! Many many years later both people would meet inside a studio with Kendrick. This song exemplifies the wickedness and weakness themes of the album as Kendricks father deciding to show weakness by giving Anthony free food ultimately saved his life, essentially making Kendrick the man he is today because if Anthony killed Ducky Kendrick likely would’ve grown up in the streets without a father figure to show him right from wrong and how to be a “Real” man like he does in Good Kid mAAd City and there would also be no TDE label for Kendrick to even be signed to. Wild crazy insane story with so much depth and meaning behind it, sounds like one of those things far too insane and profound to be true.
my favorites when this came out were element, lust, DNA, XXX, and Loyalty. Now I would say it's the entire album, I can't pick lol. No skips that's for DAMN sure. pun intended.

One of my favourite Kendrick albums. His next album is definitely his most vulnerable so I can't wait for that reaction.
Been waiting on this one! Feel is so underrated. He says "feel" so many times yet you don't get tired of it
Feel was our best track as you can probably tell !!
The British accent you hear in LUST is actually a sample from British band RATBOY’s song called KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
Kendrick is on his own level nobody compares. The best musician alive not just a rapper.
Facts! 🤝🏾
That is Kendrick doing the high pitch voice. He is it chameleon? It can do a million different things with his voice and cadence
😂 no it’s the producer Steve lacy doing the high pitch vocals.

The second half of DNA. is insane, like not only is it super fast but the writing is fantastic too
Lust is so underrated, those reverse drums are fire
