The Loyal Steed-The Last Ride of My Trek 8000

  • My beloved Trek 8000 has finally had its last ride. I bought this Trek 8000 (used) when I was a Peace Corps volunteer in 2003. I used it as a volunteer for two years, then rode it home to Colorado at the end of my service. I rode it coast to coast, down both the East and West Coasts, and used it as my daily commuter. On April 5th, 2016, it took its last ride.

    Wow! I just turned thirty last December and ever since I was a little girl I used to borrowed my fathers bike and dream of having my own one day. Many years passed and I almost forgot my dream. But now having mu own brings me so much joy and freedom. I do believe that biking is a way forward not backward as a means of transportation.

    I enjoyed watching your video. I don't look forward to the day when I must say goodbye to my touring bike. Some say a bike is just a couple wheels connected by a frame. As you and I know it is much more than that. It enables us to connect to the great outdoors, slows down time and enables us to see the world at the speed of bicycle.

    • @duzer
      @duzer  7 лет назад +1

    I had a Trek 7000 and similar to your story, that bike got me everywhere in high school (Colorado) and college in the frigid temps Fargo offers. You are spot on when you say 15mph is the perfect speed to see/experience life on a bike. I moved overseas in 2008 (Shenzhen, China), then Cairo, Egypt and now Hong Kong. My bikes have taken me places and allowed me to experience SOOOO many things a person simply cannot see or experience in a car, bus, etc. It's pretty amazing what a simple set of wheels can bring to your life. Thanks for sharing all of your adventures and spreading MUCHO great vibes to this world!!!

    It's just a flesh wound . . . loved your tribute. Yeah, these machines can become a part of us. Among my bicycles is my Schwinn SuperSport I got as a wee lad. I still ride it most days. It turned 50 years old this year. Long live those bicycles.

    Same here dude treated my bike like my best buddy.
    I had my first bike that was really old, it came from my dad and she was like forgotten. all rusted and everything.
    Rode it a couple of times and man! , never thought in my life I would love biking. Decided to upgrade it a little and maintain the old classy look. Now, I got a new bike and returned it to my dad. He is now back to cycling again and upgraded the old bike more than I did. The old bike is now 9 yrs old still kicking and making memories with my Dad again.
    Though, I have my new bike. I still check for the old bike and see its condition every now and then.
    Ride safe and keep making great content. We really appreciate it.

    Great story Ryan! Really captures how we all feel about our first real bike love. The ones that take us on our first big adventure. They aren’t always the best or most expensive bikes, but they truly become a part of us. Every mile ridden & the bond gets stronger. And you’re right...when they die...it’s less sad than a happy reminder of all the great experiences you had together. For me, it’s my Giant Escape that I’ve had since 2012. It hasn’t cracked in half yet like your Trek 8,000...but with a few more adventures, who knows! Thanks for the inspiration dude. ✌🏼

    • @BikeTall
      @BikeTall 5 лет назад +2

      Ryan Van Duzer Lol. Yes, me too! *Safely of course*. I was actually going to upgrade to a Giant Toughroad for my next big adventure...but it almost feels like I’d be cheating on my trusty GE...so i dunno yet. I plan to ride from NY to Cali. Then take my bike overseas and ride Japan North to South, Taiwan North to South and then New Zealand North to South. I think my Giant Escape could make it. And if it cracks in half along the journey, Giant headquarters are in Taiwan...so maybe I could upgrade to the Toughroad then. But who knows...maybe it will make it all the way to the end of the journey! Only one way to find out. Cheers ✌🏼

    I'm surprised the monostay didn't break. I wonder if the BOB trailer was a cause of the failure. And the 50,000 or so miles you put on it were a contributing factor for sure. I guess any aluminum frame will do that somewhere at some point.

    I love this homage to the Trek 8000. I bought mine new in 1994 as my first “big” purchase after graduating college and getting my first “real” job. I still have it, I swapped out the knobies for road tires, and I use it mostly as a city bike to run errands and pick up restaurant food orders because I’m too impatient to wait for delivery. But I do have plans to take it on my second bike packing trip. It’s a great bike!

    Funny enough, I had the same bike - same frame color, same year, everything. It's ironic to see that you loved that bike so much because out of the 25 bikes or so I've owned in my life, the Trek 8000 was my least favorite bike. I had my best XC race result on it but it was not due to it's geometry. I guess if I had the same experience you did with your bike I'd feel the same way.

    When I ride my Kona Fire Mountain (2015)
    I do alot of thinking and self reflecting. Also keep my eyes open for traffic and impatient drivers

    I don't know how much is it about the bike, really. You have a big heart, man --- I think any bike would be proud to be your partner. Ride on, brother!

    And that Trek 8000 is unbelievably lucky to have been owned by you, so that it could've lived its life as a bicycle to its fullest. I'd clean up the frame and hang it on the wall if I were you. You two had a great run, but it's time to make new memories with another two wheeled friend! Hope you find the perfect replacement bike!

    Ryan, you have to contact Shifter. He just did this amazing pair of videos with NJB. You need to have a Calgary vs Boulder showdown with him. Would be great for your channel and we fans would love it. I already told him to contact you.
