The Steam Deck single-handedly converted me to PC gaming. Being able to hit the power button and instantly play for 5-10 minutes at a time has allowed me to get back into gaming for the first time in years. This thing is revolutionary.

My daughter broke her arm last night, and is getting used to all the things she can't do - such as play with a normal controller. Also a software developer, I had pretty much abandoned PC in favour of console for the ease of use and low entry cost. The Steam Deck is the only thing that brought me back, I can tinker as little or as much as I want and I have fewer stability problems than I ever did on PC with driver issues, crashes etc. Not to say it doesn't happen, but I definitely have fewer issues. I totally agree, I just want to sit back and relax in the evening, not be reinstalling drivers because my favourite game has decided to start crashing.

There's a good chance they'll release both their VR headset and a new Steam Machine before a next gen Steam Deck.
I'm not kidding, btw. There's a legitimate chance of a new Steam Machine releasing alongside Valves' new headset, which would both work in tandem for console-like PCVR gaming.
There's leaks, patents, code names, and photos of a weird console in their office from like 2019.

Nah I highly doubt it will be that long, I suspect 3 to 4 years, because 5 or 6 years is too long in the PC space and that will pull many of us towards the rivals of the Deck, whereas 3 to 4 years is enough time for enough hardware progress to happen to do a decent upgrade.
Think of it a bit like mid-gen console upgrade, which is a better fit compared to what consoles normally do of 6-8 years which is way too long.
3 to 4 years will allow Valve to keep pace with rivals whiles also keeping pace with newer games.
Because of this, I think 2025 might be a good time for Valve to release a Deck 2 once the new gen APU's are released or whatever custom job Valve is working on, any longer then that and it's going to be hard to justify the Deck with how aggressive rivals are on price cutting and the performance gap will end up getting too big.
Remember guys, all these devices are in the same playing field, playing the same games, if a rival offers better, gamers will shift, unlike consoles where loyalty and games exclusive plays a big part on what they buy.

    • @SolDizZo
      @SolDizZo 5 месяцев назад

      @@paul1979uk2000 I'm a valve fanboy and I agree completely.
If Valve wants to compete, that's the cycle they'll choose.
However, we have known Valve to be without competition in the past... my meaning is they simply put something forward that is without comparison for at least several months before anyone can catch up.
Whatever they're cooking... we're going to have to let them cook. They have all the cards.
You talk about competition, and I agree, as it regards anything they've ever made in the past.
If "Steam Deck 2" is JUST a pc/handheld, it will face competition. Basically I'm trying to say that it will probably be a LOT MORE than just that.

The SteamDeck is still a King. People only want a Steam Deck 2 because there is no Steam Console. If valve launched a powerful Steam Console and VideoCard addon that turned the Steam Console into the Steam Console Pro, kind of like Xbox Series X/S. Then people would not want a steam deck 2 so quickly. Also, imagine if you only needed to buy an addon to turn series S into series X.

To be fair, it used to be the case, but Linux just needed someone to come up with a package solution that just works, SteamOS isn't perfect but for a lot of gamers, it just works.
Linux could have done this themselves but there are too many voices pulling in all directions.
At the end of the day, for Linux to gain any traction, it needed software compatibility with Windows software, it doesn't matter how it's done, just as long as it works and performs, Valve are doing that with Proton, after all, most users and gamers don't care what is under the hood, but they do care if the software and games run or not, basically, Linux needs strong software compatibility with Windows for many of us to consider Linux, after all, I'm sure you've heard it a million times how many have said, they would like to move to Linux but it doesn't have this or that software, I've heard it countless times that software compatibility is the number 1 issue that holds many of us from adopting Linux, that's slowly changing thanks to the Steam Deck, but more can be done.

I would hate to see a steam deck 2 right now knowing what hardware is out there available to them currently. They kind of struck gold with the APU they use in the steam deck because for so many reasons except power it is perfect for handheld gaming. Battery life is good, efficiency is great and it plays most games just fine… the steam deck is the first device I ever used to emulate games and it was incredible because my childhood memories were not ruined, emulation is so good today that when I play old games it appears how my brain remembers it 😂 if I play on original hardware my memories are ruined because I don’t remember them looking so bad but upscaled emulation and other tweaks you can do in emulation software keeps my memories intact and it’s just epic… not steam deck exclusive ofcourse because we have so many devices that can do it but the deck just gets it so right.
Valve just know what they are doing, they know why the deck works, nobody wants 30w plus and 1 hour gaming while still not achieving 60fps in reality. I hope valve wait as long as they need to get it right second time round.

Whether or not the steam deck is "showing it's age" really depends on what games you're trying to play on it. You may as well say you only play AAA games, and if that's the case you probably shouldn't have bought a steam deck in the first place. Meanwhile indie games and older gems work a dream, and that back catalogue is getting bigger and bigger as Valve continues to push for more and and more games to be deck verified. I'm particularly interested in seeing more games from the PS360 get ported to PC (or verified if they are already ported), because they would run perfectly on deck (and the xperia and rpcs3 emulators still leave a lot to be desired).

I hope the next iteration of the steam deck uses the same shell as it is now. It’s a design they nailed. And to discard it would feel a bit of a waste. They already made multiple revisions to the board, panel, battery, apu nm from 7 -> 6nm, etc already with the oled. I believe there’s still a ton of life in the current design.

2 years is and should not be enough time for a substantial upgrade. Do we really want valve to be like these other handheld emulator models and release a "new console" every 3-6 months? Valve's steam deck, despite it being able to do that kind of things and being basically a Linux PC, is not really in that kind of field. They are more in the field of modern video game consoles, like Xbox, PS and nintendo, where it probably will take 5-7 years (if not more) of them to make a substantial upgrade. And I think that is totally fine and justifiable.
Like at this point, if you want it to be upgradable, maybe you should just look into building computers and solder a new more powerful CPU when you see one, or something.
It's been two years, that is barely any time. The steam deck is honestly still one of, if not, the best handheld console you can get out of ANY VG manufacturer, including nintendo, xbox (i know they dont have one lol), PS, and all of these other handheld style consoles. Be patient, or play your more exponentially powerful games on a different device until valve is ready. I know I want them to take their time, make something that is actually good and not to make a quick buck, like every goddamn corporation out there is doing, just maximizing profits to appease their stakeholders. We do not want valve to do that, or at least not obviously show it lol, we need more companies to actually make a good product.

@@pookanoid steam deck is amazing and i prefer it to my rog ally quite significantly for so many reasons but we are living in cloud cuckoo land if we think these things are AAA gaming machines and they manage it easily, AAA gaming is quite frankly pretty dogshit on any handheld, its nothing but major compromise in every way, usually low settings, usually not native resolution etc its just a novelty at best. Go grab balatro, set the deck to 4w, enjoy smooth 60 or even 90fps, bask in the 12 hours of battery life and thats peak steam deck gaming. Then get emudeck sorted and play retro games, ps1, ps2, gamecube, whatever really - at much higher fidelity than they were originally and still get massive battery life, this is just the deck in its absolute element.

The steam deck is great device. But it IS under powered. 4c/8t was bare minimum in 2019 for PC games. When ps5/XSX came out. That minimum changed. Devs target as standard as of Nov/2020. Both current gen consoles are using 8c/16t and RDNA2 gpu.
What Valve needs to do is put out is steam box or steam consoles with specs that are slightly better then ps5 imo. Something VR/4k/60 capable system. 10 to 20 Tflops system could be capable of doing that. Zen 3+, 8c/16t with RDNA3 with proper dedicated at least 16GB GDDR6 memory and or with DDR4/5 memory system of OS /background task.
Valve could make steam box with zen 3/RDNA 3 with 16 GB Gddr6 for games. Put 8 GB DDR4/5 just for OS to run/background task.

For me, its Valve regional pricing done right. Only Valve is the one doing regional pricing for games in the Philippines, with all other consoles mostly referring to US/Japan pricing, which is real expensive given purchasing power. That makes Steam Deck the cheapest console ever (both on hardware and on software). Steam sales is the cherry on top

It's crazy the gaming experience Steam provides. I have a Linux PC that sits between my desk and TV. When I'm tired of programming or just want to sit in my recliner and relax I can hit CTRL + ALT + F2 where I have a script running that will send Steam in BPM to 4 different screens for a console like experience. One of those screens is a dummy plug I use to stream to my Steam Deck. The crazy thing is I can play those old retro DOS games like Dungeon Hack with a controller on my TV because Steam input is absolutely amazing.

I love my steam deck. I put an XBPlay ($6.99) app on steam deck located on the store. I can play MLB the Show 2024 at 60fps via Xbox cloud Fullscreen. Most days it runs well (depending on network traffic) and look great even online play. Waiting for Sony to put the game on PC. It's on everything else. I can jump from Ori in HDR on Steam Deck OLED is a sight to behold to emulation. Unless Microsoft get it together for the handhelds. I'm team Valve. I'm a person who love the latest and greatest tech. But the steam deck with its battery, controls, screen and ease of use. Asus, MSI or Lenovo just can't pull me from it. I don't care what APU they're using. It's a console with PC flexibility. At this point unless someone copy this thing every feature. I'll gladly wait for steam deck 2 whenever it comes. And if Valve goes back to LCD I might stay put until there's an OLED version. Yes, we can buy an APU that will run gow at 60 fps but if that APU can't last a 2-hour flight no thanks.

I had a Steam account for about a decade that I rarely touched but ever since I got the LCD steam deck my PC gaming has exponentially increased. Now if a game comes out for all systems I prefer to get it on steam over all other platforms. My only gripe with the deck would be that I wish it did have a high performance profile so that I could play the more demanding 3D games at the sacrifice of battery life. I'm fine with all low settings at 30 FPS because I only play single player games anyway. I also rarely play for longer than two hours at a time. I was really intrigued with the ally but decided to go with the OLED instead and have no regrets.

I do agree that the Steam Deck doesn't need an upgrade yet, there's not a big enough of an upgrade on the hardware level yet to warrant an upgrade at the moment and even the rivals that do offer better hardware, they are having to throw more energy at it, which kinda defeats the purpose of portable gaming, basically, with current battery tech and pricing, 15-20 watts is the limit for having decent battery life, so the performance uplift needs to be in that power bracket.
With that said, I don't think Valve can afford to wait too long to release a Steam Deck 2, the Deck is a PC/console hybrid but because there are so many options on the market, if the Deck gets left behind too much, it will be hard to justify buying the Deck unless there's a massive price cut, and personally, I think an upgrade every 3 or 4 years would work out well, that gives enough time for hardware progress, whiles not being too long of 6 or 8 years that consoles normally do.
I think Valve targets 3 or 4 years, depending on hardware progress on the market, that will work for most gamers, but if they take longer than that, I suspect many will shift towards rivals, especially as many of them are being more aggressive on price slashing.
In other words Valve, don't get too comfortable with SteamOS, polish and quality control being a selling, those are only selling points to a degree, and rivals in time will likely close the gap on all of that.
Another factor I think Valve needs to do is be more open to other store fronts, like it or not, other store fronts are here to stay and that is a selling point for rivals that have easy access to that, and ideally, if Valve can offer a way of allowing games from other store fronts but in a way that's integrated into Steam so it's a seamless thing that all the games are in one place, that would work well, but I doubt Valve will do that and because of that, that will be an advantage for rivals that are more open to allowing games on all store fronts.
Still at least for now, there are ways of getting other store fronts on the Steam Deck, but I think a better more streamline approach is needed.
I will say one thing about the Steam Deck 2 when it's released, it really needs to have the option that you can get a dock and have an e-gpu attached to it, for gamers that want more horsepower when gaming on the big screen, that for me will be a massive selling point with how rivals are offering that, it basically allows you to have the best of both worlds, portable gaming and higher end gaming on the big screen, so much so that for many, you could probably get rid of your gaming rig, and if the Steam Deck 2 doesn't offer that, that would be a dealbreaker for me that makes the rivals look far more appealing.
As for when I think a Steam Deck 2 should be released, I suspect in 2025, probably around the same time as the Switch 2 is releases, or just a little before it, Valve might want to capitalise on the noise at the time, after all, if Valve can capture just a small percentage of gamers that were planning to buy a Switch 2, that would be a big success for Valve, it's also likely that newer APU's will be released by then so the performance uplift might be worth then doing a Deck 2.

On deck vs anything else battery wise. Train trip of about 3h. Been playing Elden Ring a lot preparing a new character for DLC. Next to me was a dude with an Ally. We changed pleasantries and we tested each other's devices and I must say, the scree on the ally is not bad at all. For a non OLED screen wow... And the performance on turbo mode... Yeah. He has also been playing Elden Ring. He looked at my Elden ring and how good it looked (thanks to HDR) and he asked how much battery I could get out of it. I checked the timer (non busy area) and it gave me 3h20m. Now I am sure I don't get that with lots of action but he was floored by the difference. His ally if he went turbo mode would be dead in 40 mins or so. In order to play for a long time he had to limit tdp lower resolution and make the game look uglier. But yeah, plug it in to the mains and the deck is toast.

Added some *QoL* *improvements* for my Steam Deck 512 LCD over the weekend….
*Redream:* For some reason, this won’t launch from the EmuDeck/EmulationStation. I was stuck using Flycast and didn’t like how some games ran from it. I needed Redream to be a standalone emulator but still launch from the Steam library.
My other big issue with Redream is it won’t remember the path if the Dreamcast ROMs were placed in the folder where EmuDeck reads them from. So I had to separate all my Dreamcast games from the big emulation folder. It’s now in the internal storage next to the Redream files and it can now remember the path. Also, changed redream to redream.exe from the actual file name because Steam can’t find it if it’s the former. Then edited the name again in the Steam gaming mode menu.
Dreamcast games plays closer to flawless again. Dreamcast is my 2nd favorite console of all-time and it bothered me that I couldn’t use the emulator I wanted until figuring it out over the weekend. The only thing is the games won’t show up in EmulationStation anymore. I can live with it as long as I can play the games nicely.
*Pluto* *TV:* Since getting the Pluto TV and Tubi apps about 5+ years ago, I rarely use Netflix anymore. Pluto TV is a Paramount service but three of my favorite sitcoms are on there. All I want from it is a channel that plays The Golden Girls all the time. Maybe toss in Martin, The Wonder Years, Doogie Howser MD, and another comfort soup show like Northern Exposure.
Doogie Howser and The Wonder Years used to appear on ABC, so they’re more likely owned by Disney. I do love the Price is Right channel during the Bob Barker era. Watched a little of it last night. It’s the game show I’d watch if I wasn’t in school or during summer vacation. I can live with the ads as long as it’s free and they have a great selection of content which they do.
I personally don’t need any of them on any streaming service since all I do is use torrents and then save them on my Google Photos using an old Pixel 3 which has unlimited storage saver for life. The limit is 1080p. Everything from Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Loki, WandaVision, Andor, The Mandalorian, The Boys, Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head, Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, Heels, Ted (2024), Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, they’re all there uploaded on my Google Photos.
This June is going to be packed: House of the Dragon S2 vs. The Boys S4 vs. The Acolyte? I think HOT D wins out. The lore is more interesting. But I do love The Boys.
*Tubi:* If you know movies like I do, Tubi has superior content over Netflix. I have an account and basically keep adding movies on my watchlist. Tons of foreign and softcore porn movies! Has many of the Showa Godzilla movies. Has my Gilligan’s Island too while Pluto TV covers I Love Lucy, Three’s Company, and Married…with Children. Pluto TV + Tubi are practically unbeatable since they’re free. Just need to live with the ads. Rewatched Get Out (2017) again on Tubi last night.
*Kodi:* So I couldn’t really create an app to add to Steam for Google Photos using Microsoft Edge. So what I’ll do instead is download some movies and TV shows from my Google Photos and save it onto my Deck. Then will have Kodi play it. I was going to use VLC but it doesn’t seem it can be added onto Steam. And Kodi seems to have a much nicer interface.
I have over 1400 movies and tons of TV shows in one of my three Google Photos accounts. But the only one downloaded for the Steam Deck is video game related. It’s a documentary called Console Wars (2020) which can be found on Netflix. I read the Blake J. Harris book back in 2014. I may include 8-Bit Christmas (2021), both live action Sonic movies, and the recent Super Mario movie for it.
I really want a complete set of the animated Shenmue series on my Steam Deck. I use magnetdl and I can’t find it complete. While I love the original Final Fantasy VII game, I didn’t care for Advent Children. That movie dragged. Most of my favorite TV shows and movies are on my multiple Android smartphones.
The other ones added are RUclips, Gmail, Reddit, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. That’s a total of 10 “non games” if you include the 4 other ones mentioned earlier and EmulationStation. I set every app / website launcher to the native resolution of 1280 x 800. Looked through Google images to crop thumbnails for each of them. What really boosted my experience was finally figuring out each controller template. Set most of them to web browser and it’s like browsing from a tablet.
This thing can be used for a decade if you really wanted to. Just replace the battery every few years. When I got my Deck nearly two months ago, battery health (which can seen under desktop mode) read 97%. But I’ve been using it so much, it’s down to 92%. I honestly thought I would barely use it after the initial honeymoon phase wore off but it’s been the complete opposite for me and I carry it with me every day since I’m a gig driver.
The Steam Deck is frickin’ amazing. If I’m bored playing games, I’ll use it to do something else like watch porn or read Reddit posts. I only bring one smartphone now because the Steam Deck is so complementary to any smartphone whether it’s iPhone or Android since it’s essentially a PC as well. It’s the G.O.A.T. It made me less interested for the Switch 2. F Nintendo! Cheers to Valve! 🍻

I know a lot about tikering with PC's and PC games, but I just didn't want that anymore. I just wanted to sit down and play like the old times, and the Steam Deck managed to get me back to that. Still doesn't have the basic Steam feature of Streaming, but has remote play.
Basically you can have someone remote play to the deck no problem, but streaming a game is.
2 years and still not fixed.

I am trying to use the SteamDeck with my Meta Quest 2. That's what I want! I live in Steam VR on my Quest 2 right now. So having a portable VR on the go is the next step and would justify a SteamDeck 2.

Steam deck 2 MUST HAVE a second usbc port. Non-negotiable. It markets itself “2x the usb-c ports on the steam deck 2.”

    Valve has done wonders.
I expect the next Steam Deck to be a game-changer.
I'm considering buying the LeGo because of the switch-like joycon feature it has. But now i'm hearing that Lenovo just announced a LeGo 2?
Thats the only thing I truly despise from these companies. Apparently the LeGo 1 still has software issues it needs to iron out as well as other things they could do like release different joycons, but instead they are talking about a LeGo 2? It hasnt even been a full year.
At least with Valve, nothing significant changed with the Steam Deck OLED. I still have the original SD LCD 512 and it has been nothing but solid for me.
My only concern is that I buy a LeGo, then the LeGo 2 gets released around Christmas with something like more RAM, faster APU... etc.
Valve made the right move by fine-tuning the SD and SteamOS before even considering the SD 2.

One would HOPE they aren't done with it. They need to create something for at least parity with the ROG Ally, which can run Dragon's Dogma 2 without a problem, if they hope to remain relevant. I mean...there's always those odd casual gamers who will drop like 400 bucks just to play popular, low-requirement indie titles that are available for and run just fine on their current cell phone, but you can't count on them to remain satisfied as more and more demanding games come out...that everything but the Deck can handle without visual fidelity and fps cuts. Everybody eventually wants to see just what their Deck can do. Don't want to disappoint them. That "day late, dollar short" model only works for Nintendo because they have exclusive games. If all you do is PC games, you need to stay up to current specs, or ideally over-compensate for modern times to future-proof your device.

I’d say it’s showing its age. Horizon Forbidden West was so laggy that I ended up getting a low powered gaming laptop. And FSR currently looks awful. I couldn’t put up with it anymore, bad upscaling technology plus very low resolution plus low frames.
Maybe I’ll get dogpilled but the Steam Deck is more suited for older games and emulators. This idea that it can play AAA titles well enough is a reach.
It’s a shame, I really wanted it to be my everyday device and leave Nvidia and Windows behind for good but it’s just not there yet.
We need an upgrade, and it needs to compete with the upcoming Switch Attach.

Idk what homie is talking bout but tinkerers don't want to spend their time fixing the platforms problems and getting it to play nice, they'd much rather spend it enhancing the platform and the user experience, and with that said the Steam Deck IS a tinkerers dream! I've spent hours setting up and configuring deckyloader, cssloader, all of it's other customizable plugins and cryoutilities. I've set up web browser kiosk apps for game pass, Luna, moonlight, Netflix and the rest of my streaming services. Set up and configured emu deck, kodi, Lutris and a bunch of non-steam games. I'v had my deck since June '23, sold it last month and got an OLED, and I am always finding more stuff to tinker with, and ALL of it is much more fun and inyeresting than fucking around with drivers, or trying to get windows to cooperate or figuring out the optimal settings of each and every game.

I’d like to mention BaziteOS is a great option to look into for the other handhelds
Also “Minecraft” can be played on Linux via Java or the “Bedrock Launcher”
Anyways, loving the Deck, it’s brought me back to my PC library after being with my PS for 2 years
Also the Deck is such a leap in hardware but more so software compared to the previous handhelds, and even some of the newer ones
(I owned 3 GPD Products, and I will never prefer them over my Steam Deck)

First-worlders complaining about Steam Deck 2 already while I still can't buy it even the first LCD one directly from Valve because my country apparently doesn't exist to them, smh. Why can't people get their priorities straight? Get your shit worldwide first THEN think about a sequence, not the opposite.

I think Valve "knows their chickens"... and really set off to create the "library backlog machine", monetising people that weren't buying very much because of ageing PCs and/or time available. And once you have "freed up" some of your library you are going to feel better about buying newer stuff.
