In Praise of Quality: Why it Should Matter to You

For many project managers, quality management is not the highlight of your profession. You know that you need to understand quality. And, of course, you need to deliver it. But that hardly makes it a source of excitement.
Put Quality at Number 1
Put quality at the top of your priority list. Not for the familiar reasons, that you already know. Arguments like:
• Your client, your boss, or your organization is paying for it
• Your reputation is tied to the quality of your deliverables
• Poor quality means tedious re-work
• Right-first-time saves time and money
• Poor quality can create health and safety threats
• And low quality can compromise security
There's Another Reason to Prioritize Quality
Part of it is a deep pride in doing something really well. That's the part that's easy to explain.
But there's more to it than pride:
There can be a deep pleasure in getting lost in doing something well. It is a sense of complete commitment that is deeply fulfilling. A part of it is the feeling of 'being in the flow' that you get when you are wholly engrossed.
I'm Thinking about Mindfulness
When we take the time to dedicate our complete focus on something, magic can happen. It's about how we feel, the sharpness of our senses, and confidence in our work. You can get lost in your work so that doing it gives you complete satisfaction. And, when you have finished, your pride in its quality is about the satisfaction that you have done the best you can.
You Can Put Quality First in Anything
It might be producing a deliverable, holding a conversation, or eating your lunch. Turn every scrap of your attention over to the task at hand. And see what a difference that makes.

Well done! Everyone has an innate desire to be part of something greater than themselves. What you are describing is what I refer as becoming One with my Higher Self, though with most people who haven’t a clue what that means, I just call it Zen. Most have some idea of what that means conceptually, even if they believe they’ve never experienced it.

I love quality… but it always seems no boses I ever have had want to see the idear of me making quality work..

That's disappointing. Or maybe the quality standard they need is different from what you assess is right.

Absolutely, they always wanted the minimum product to be able to invoice, not a product which is more .. futureproof. I think the bidding.. and customer expectation is always set too low.. so they buy in. But it ends up with people only thinking about getting out of the workplace…
